Peace doveI don't need to make you wrong for me to be right . . . and other peaceful thoughts
By Susan Tate

A few years ago I discovered a profound sense of peace when I let go of my need to be right. It was humbling to acknowledge how the dark side of my thinking sometimes involved a need to make other people wrong so I could be right. Ouch. And I was subtle. Mostly, it was in my own head. But if I verbalized my thoughts, I often professed, "They were doing the best they could." Oh, pa-lease . . . how condescending is that?

Do you really want to feel happy and peaceful? Or as the Course in Miracles asks, "Do you prefer to be right, or happy?" Observe the thoughts that enter your mind and sometimes pour out of your mouth. Then make a choice to choose higher, better, happier, more peaceful words.

When you notice the words you use each day as you speak or write, do you often complain or do you see the glimmer of good that may appear during a frustrating day? I am not suggesting you only "think happy thoughts." I am not advocating having blind optimism; or that you disregard feelings of sadness, pain, or grief. To get to the other side of those truly challenging life passages, I do think you need to walk through the muck, feel it all, cry it out, mourn the loss, get support, and then lift up out of it all when you are ready. And grief takes as long as it takes.

But in day-to-day living, our thoughts and words can really set the tone for what we see, feel, and experience. Most of us have heard the phrase, "What you focus on expands." Powerful thoughts, mindful words, and thoughtful action steps lead to a fulfilling life. What do you focus on? Is your life filled with it?
