 Greetings!

Susan TateSummer is emerging into back-to-school days and opportunities for a new year of learning for all of us. Twelve years ago, I wrote an article about how it felt to let go as my daughter was about to begin college. The original article was published in the Beloit College Magazine. I reprinted it in this newsletter two years ago and I would like to share it once again.

College Bound
contains support to parents and friends
who are seeing their loved ones off to college or a new life adventure. It's about letting go and allowing those we love to follow their unique path. My updated postscript to this article: the letting go continues. Molly is about to move to Brussels and my son Zac continues to share his talents as a singer/songwriter in New York City and beyond. It would be lovely to report that the letting go gets easier. It does not. But my commitment to loving these spectacular souls fully and accepting their unique path does sooth my heart and amplifies my love. Gratitude is my focus.

It seems life keeps presenting a gentle flow of opportunities for us to practice this letting go lesson. Indeed, I am a lifelong learner on this topic. Are you? You'll find Five Ways to Practice Letting Go below the feature article. It's designed to support you in letting go of your attachments to thoughts, people, and old beliefs that no longer serve you.

May this "school" season be one of fulfilling and expanding opportunities for you and those you love.

I am about to send my daughter off to college. After being involved in college health for over a decade, I probably know more than I really want to about what she will face.

As the former director of health promotion at the University of Virginia, I have had the opportunity to glimpse a slice of college life that many parents protectively deny exists. I've also had the privilege of assisting college students in making healthy choices for their lives--to be there for them while they were away from their parents. What do I feel as my own daughter is about to leave the nest? What will she face as she enters this next part of her life?

Five Ways to Practice Letting Go

Excerpt from Wellness Wisdom

  1. Explore and observe where there may be blame, shame, or guilt lurking anywhere in your mind. When you are ready, make a decision to release those thoughts and feelings if they no longer serve you.
  1. List one or two situations in your life you wish you could control but deep down, you know you really can't. Visualize what it would feel like if you gave up the need to control that situation. Decide when, or if, you would like to let go.
  1. A mentor of mine advocates, "Stand up, tell the truth, and get out of the way!" The "getting out of the way" piece is often the most challenging. Practice this technique if you like. Notice whether or not you can really get out of the way and let go of the outcome.
  1. Trust, rather than hope, things will unfold in the perfect way. Notice if trusting feels more powerful than hoping.

    5. Bring to mind the "let go, let God" thought when you need some divine

        intervention.

Lotus Heart

Your children are not your children. They are the sons and daughters of Life's longing for itself . . . You are the bows from which your children as living arrows are sent forth.
