Susan Tate Greetings!

I decided to create a combined July/August issue rather than add too much to my to do list earlier this month. It felt good and healthy to make that decision and I encourage you to see what you can put off until tomorrow and not have anything fall apart when you do!

Last week I had an unexpected trip to Pittsburgh to attend a funeral for my oldest brother's wife, Janet. As you might imagine, it was intensely sad, as we mourned the passing of someone who left this earth long before she had intended. In the middle of all of this sorrow, was a tender family reunion of several generations of Tates. I am in awe at the talents, brilliance, optimism, confidence, and loving spirits of this next generation and their children. This tender experience left me filled with love and an abundance of gratitude, thus the topic selection for this month's article. I've adapted "Magnify Gratitude" from the last chapter of my book, Wellness Wisdom. My intention is that it supports you in honoring the hard stuff in life (and death) that we all face as humans, but also allows that space to be blessed by the gifts of gratitude that are ever present in our lives.

Enjoy the articles and information below as you glance at the table of contents to see what calls to you today. Thank you for taking time to nourish your soul.

With overflowing gratitude,

Magnify Gratitude

thank you in the sandToday you have a choice to create your own Thanksgiving celebration. It's late summer, I know, but why wait until fall? Adopting a conscious attitude of gratitude can bring increased joy into our lives right this second. What we focus on expands, so why not focus on gratitude? Oft-quoted Meister Eckhart, the medieval Christian mystic, said, "If the only prayer you say in your life is 'thank you,' that would suffice."

Gratitude for what we have makes us appreciate everything even more. If you awaken in the morning and give thanks for the sky, the birds, the air, the wind, the rain, your heart beating, your ability to breathe, the people in your life--the list is endless--you can't help but to step into a more joyous day.

My former husband told me more than once, "It's hard to stay sad when you're in gratitude." He was right. I've tried switching my thoughts to gratitude when sadness gets overwhelming and it works for me. It doesn't eliminate the sadness or its cause, but I've learned that if I take time to observe and feel the sadness, I can then move away from the painful thoughts through that doorway of gratitude. The more things we are thankful for, the more things to be thankful for will show up in our lives.

Exciting news

Look for a big announcement in the September issue.

Recommended Reading

I love reading several books at a time and thought I'd share what's been on my summer reading list.

In June I reveled in Elizabeth Gilbert's latest work, Committed: A Skeptic Makes Peace with Marriage. This was a luscious and captivating book that nurtured my heart and head as it relates to this topic. Although I didn't ever want it to end, I think I read it from cover to cover on one of those rainy weekends.

Enchanted LoveRight now, I am re-reading Enchanted Love: The Mystical Power of Intimate Relationships, by Marianne Williamson. (Can you tell how much I love love?) I read this a few years ago and it helped me as I reflected on my own choices and actions of being and living in love. As I read this today, I am soaking up the prayerful gifts and understanding of the preciousness of all hearts.

The other books that are expanding my mind are: The Vitamin D Solution by Michael F. Holick, PhD, MD; Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide; and Spontaneous Evolution: Our Positive Future (and a way to get there from here) by Bruce H. Lipton, PhD and Steve Bhaerman.

What are you reading to nourish your mind, body, and spirit?

Business Blessing

Several years ago after I shared a Nia workshop at the Women of Wisdom Conference in Seattle, a lovely vendor gifted me with a prayer flag that hangs above my office door. I never knew her name but want to give her credit for this prayer that guides my sacred livelihood.
