Susan Tate Greetings!

It's a new year, a new decade and a new day. We have many opportunities to begin again. This issue is dedicated to supporting  choices so you can create a wondrous year of health, abundance and joy. Please browse through the table of contents above and click on  what appeals to you. The feature article, Intentional Joy: Cultivating Powerful Choices was intentionally written to inspire you as you step into 2010.

Thank you for the birthday cards, messages and gifts that many of you sent my way during December. This outpouring tenderly overwhelmed me and it was a big lesson in learning to receive. My gratitude is immeasurable. What a great way to begin my 60th year.

May you have a year filled with intentional joy,

Susan Tate, M.A., Editor
Director, Washington Wellness Associates

Intentional Joy: Cultivating Powerful Choices

sunset on snow

"There is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so." This famous line from Shakespeare's Hamlet presents the idea that we can choose our thoughts. Although one might easily argue that some things really ARE bad, the idea that we can put our own spin on our thoughts is quite powerful. We can use that power to create intentional joy or distressing moments.

Here's a beautiful example. My son, Zack, is an amazing musician. (Written like a proud mom, I admit.) Recently when he was playing at an outdoor venue, a five-year-old girl came up to him and asked, "What makes the music sound so beautiful?" Zack tenderly replied, "You do."

That's it! That's the secret to creating a joyful life! What makes anything appear to be good or bad, beautiful or ugly, distressing or joyful? YOU DO! We have the power to choose our thoughts!

It will include an overview of financial education, abundance planning, business education and information about residual income. After a short break, anyone who wants to learn more specifics about the Team Northrup/USANA opportunity can stay to enjoy that information. Breaking the Sugar-Stress Cycle
Deborah Kern, Ph.D.

Deb Kern photoThe extreme rise and fall of one's blood sugar several times throughout the day and the resultant over-stimulation of insulin leads to what is being called "The Metabolic Syndrome." It is the underlying cause of dyslipidemia (high triglycerides, low HDL), high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, diabetes and obesity. Unlike a genetic disorder, this phantom disorder can be fully prevented. The earlier you begin reversing it, the healthier you will be.

The 4 Stages of Insulin Resistance
1.    Glycemic Stress
2.    Insulin Resistance
3.    Metabolic Syndrome
4.    Diabetes

Stage 1: GLYCEMIC STRESS
It has been a big disservice to focus only on fat in our diets. A breakfast of cold cereal, bagels, instant oatmeal and sweetened orange juice creates the first of many blood sugar spikes throughout our day. This stimulates the release of insulin from the pancreas and suppresses the release of glucagons (fat releasing hormone).

One of the main effects of the abuse of insulin is the effect on the arteries. Elevated blood sugar levels and subsequent insulin response cause inflammation of the arteries. We are starting to see this endothelial dysfunction in children as young as 10 years of age!
