Wine Tasting January 21, 2010

6-8pm, Cost: $10

Candoni Moscato D'Italia

Low in alcohol, semi-sparkling, but remarkably fruity and fragrant, it has an excellent balance of sweetness and acidity. Made from 100% Moscato Bianco grapes from the central Italy it makes an exceptional dessert wine but is also versatile enough to enjoy as an aperitif or during summer picnics or patio meals. Excellent with pastries, cakes, desserts, fruit.

Candoni Prosecco
Delicate and fruity with a hint of honey, Candoni Prosecco is dry in the mouth with a pleasant acidity that leaves behind a delicious and persistent freshness with a dry, well-balanced taste.
This is a wine suitable for every occasion. Most sashimi and sushi dishes go beautifully with Prosecco wine.

NV Castellar Cava Rose

The Cava Rose is made of 70% Trepat and 30% Garnacha. Trepat is an indigenous Spanish grape used mainly to make Cava Roses. It has a nice pink color and an interesting fruity taste with lots of strawberry and watermelon. The flavors are subtle with a tinge of sweetness.

Ordinary Boneshaker Red Lot 21

This wine is comprised of 38% Zinfandel, 34% Merlot, 21% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Petite Sirah, 2% Alicante Bouchet but is a 100% California wine. It displays aromas of ripe red and dark berry fruits layered with notes of slight white and black pepper and crème de cassis.  The aromas carry into the palate with red fruit flavor notes in entry and full fruit into the middle.  The finish is lush and fruit flavors linger through the aftertaste.

2007 Villa San Juliette Petite Sirah Paso Robles

The true essence of Paso Robles Sirah is captured in this bottle. Winemaker Adam LaZarre jokingly refers to this wine as "blueberry motor oil" to describe the lush, rich, and dense dark fruit flavors. Fourteen months of aging in new and neutral French oak barrels adds a wonderful mocha layer on the palate. It pairs perfectly with red meats and Cajun-spiced cuisine. Just don't spill it on your shirt.

2007 Unity Hill Cabernet Sauvignon

This '07 Unity Hill is rich, complex and powerful, yet still shows beautiful finesse. The nose displays red currant, chocolate and a mineral component with herbal sage and tea leaves. The flavors are deep and rich with classic cabernet structure and balance.

FRIDAY BEER TASTING
January 22, 2010
6-PM COST: $10

Reissdorf Kolsch

Appearance: Koelsch is typically lighter even than Pilsner in color. Flavor: A slightly malty, fairly soft palate. Finish: The finish is decidedly dry due to its high attenuation and firm hop character. The cleanness is a result of a fairly long, cold maturation of two to six weeks.  Try with seafood, pork, salads and Stem & Stein sandwiches.  4.8% ABVBeer Advocate A-

St. Ambroise Apricot

Apricot Wheat Ale blends various barley malts with malted wheat and natural apricot essence to create an original-tasting beer with a clean, fruit nose.  5% ABV Beer Advocate: B

Mendocino White Hawk IPA

White Hawk Original IPA has a rich distinctive hop character and bold malt flavor. This Select IPA has a unique aroma, a clean finish and is brewed to satisfy connoisseurs the world over. Mendocino blended American West Coast Cascade Hops with a very generous dose of English Fuggle Hops. This combination makes for a very aromatic character, as well as a truly authentic English flavor which you must taste to believe. White Hawk Original IPA has an ABV of 7.0% and a bitterness of 60 IBU. "Hopheads" will love this brew! Beer Advocate: B

Melchior

Melchior is brewed by Picobrouwerij Alvinne / Den Bierzolder in Belgium. It is an English Barleywine brewed with Mustard seeds.  It pours an amber orange color and the taste is a bit spicy, hoppy and sweet.  The mustard seed flavor is not prominent but makes this beer work.   11% ABV Beer Advocate B

Gouden Carolus Curolus D'or

Through the combination of caramel and aromatic malts, and with the traditional highed fermentation this ruby red dark beer combines the warmness of wine and the freshness of beer. Through his high density of 19° Plato the "Gouden Carolus Classic" is classified under the special beers. Through here it is very good for certain culinary destinations like stews, game and even sabayon.  The true connoisseur drinks it in small sips to enjoy it fully.  8.5% ABV Beer Advocate A

Sam Smith Tadcaster Taddy Porter

Porter was the first commercially brewed beer. It was named forthe train porters who were its original servers and consumers. Samuel Smith's Old Brewery, Yorkshire's oldest, reintroduced authentic porter to the British beer scene in 1979 after an absence of more than 50 years. The taste of this porter is very dark, fairly full in body and packed with flavor. Intense, dry tangy character of roasted barley.  Try pairing with Oysters on the half shell, Rockefeller or Cajun style; clams, mussels, crab cocktail, lobster bisque and other shellfish, smoked mackerel pâté, veal with green peppercorns, porterhouse steak and of course chocolate. Serve at 55 degrees in nonik or tumbler.
