Summer is a time for the whole family, including our pets, to enjoy the great outdoors. However, just as there are safety precautions to ensure warm-weather safety for humans, there are precautions to make sure your pets stay safe, happy and cool during the hot months across the country.
| | Theodore is a love bug and waiting to meet you! |
Many of the safety concerns we have for ourselves during the hottest months of the year also apply to our pets. Hot weather makes us all a little uncomfortable. But when it's hot for you, it is probably even hotter for your pet - especially if it has a dark coat, a short muzzle, is in its elder years like good 'ole Theodore, or has a tendency to overexert itself. Dogs aren't as efficient at cooling down as we are, since they release most of their body heat through panting and the pads of their feet.
Decrease the risks of letting your pet enjoy the outdoors in summer with these tips:
Adjust their exercise routine by taking them out for playtime in the early morning and evening hours. This is especially important if your dog is your jogging partner. While you can alter the type of clothing you wear, your dog can't. Many dogs will keep running to stay with you, even if they are suffering due to the heat.
Be cautious when walking your dog on pavement (which can get very hot and may burn your pet's paws) and at the beach. Running on sand is strenuous and can cause injury to a pet that is out of shape. Start with slower, shorter walks and gradually increase according to your pet's ability and health.
Provide your pet with plenty of water.
Try a simple keep-cool tactic such as soaking a bandana in water and putting it in the freezer before you put it on your dog to wear on a walk.
Make sure your pet has plenty of access to a shady area to rest when outdoors. During supervised playtime in the yard your pet might enjoy access to a child's wading pool to cool off in.
Perhaps most important, be sure never to leave your pet unsupervised in a car. Not only are they are susceptible to being stolen, but even on a mild day a car can heat up quickly and your pet could suffer heatstroke. While it was a warm | | Bryan from Perry Ellis International with Bert the Beagle (available for adoption) | day out on the greens last month, those of you who participated in our 6th Annual Putt 4 Paws Golf Tournament at Doral on May 18th, did enjoy hanging with a few of our adoptable beagles Bert, Snoopy, Lacey and Missy. It's Beagle Mania at Paws 4 You Rescue and we hope to adopt many hounds out this summer both young and older, big and small. Beagles are great family companions that are loyal and devoted friends for life.

Help the Horses by Jodi Marr
 | Ellyn Robinson, Vice President of South Florida SPCA with Jeanette Jordan, President and Executive Director, standing with Foolish Treasure (fully recovered and now available for adoption)

Dogs aren't the only animal friends who need our help in South Florida! Animal activist and advocate Jeanette Jordan, President and Executive Director of the SFSPCA Horse Rescue (South Florida Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) spoke to Paws 4 You about rescuing mankind's other best friend: the Horse!
"I've always loved animals." says Jordan, "I became interested in animal rescue as soon as I was old enough to realize that animals needed to be rescued. I started out working with dogs...In the past I have served on the Boards of Responsible Dog Owners of Florida, Doberman Rescue League of Florida and Doberman Pinscher Club of Florida where I served as Dog Obedience Director. I was also a volunteer dog trainer for the South Dade Kennel Club. I have rescued and fostered many dogs over the past twenty years. I currently share my home with Chloe, a Jack Russell Terrier rescued by SFSPCA.
| Garfield the Cat is available for adoption |
Although SFSPCA is primarily a horse rescue, many dogs and cats are dumped at their ranch. When this happens, as it frequently does, they spay or neuter them, then try to place them in foster homes until they are adopted.
Jeanette, the SFSPCA Board and volunteers are working hard with Pets Trust, a collaborative collective animal rescue effort that would permit the citizens of Miami-Dade County to vote on the issue of fully-funding animal rescue services in our community. More information on the Pets Trust can be accessed on their website.
Jordan became involved with rescuing horses and the SFSPCA in 2002 "when she found out that Kentucky Derby winner, Ferdinand, was sent to slaughter in Japan. "I realized then that horses in our own country were being slaughtered and were victims of horrible abuse," she explains.

| Horses are a living symbol of our American heritage and freedom. They ignite the free spirit in all of us. Sadly, all across America, and here in our own South Florida neighborhoods, that freedom is being taken away, and that noble spirit is being betrayed. Local police are battling an alarming increase in abuse abandonment and illegal dumping of horses. Unfortunately, Miami has also been in the national news as several arrests have been made for illegal horse slaughter in Hialeah and Kendall this past year alone. "Horses are prey animals who look to trust their human companions for guidance and protection," says Jordan, "so when they are betrayed it adds an element of tragedy to see this." The SFSPCA helps bring these criminals to justice. It's main mission, however, is to rescue rehabilitate and re-home the horses and domestic farm animals removed from terrible situations. Working with law enforcement the SFSPCA is is a private, nonprofit organization that provides medical treatment, shelter and care until a foster situation or permanent home can be secured. Established in 1992, SFSPCA is one of the oldest, largest, continuously operating horse rescues in the country. Since it's inception, SFSPCA has rescued and re-homed over 1,700 horses and other animals.

"We physically rescue the horses," says Jordan, "but their spirits need to be mended as well. Beyond the gates of the ranch, activists Jordan and Ranch Director and Chief Cruelty Investigator Laurie Waggoner work tirelessly to make a real difference for these animals. Thanks to their advocacy and lobbying efforts, Florida has become one of the most horse friendly States in the Union and a legislative model for others. SFSPCA helped write and pass the 2010 Horse Protection Act, giving lawmakers the tools to arrest and convict criminal horse abusers.
"We provide assistance to the district attorney's office when charges are filed," says Waggoner, "sometimes winning a case in court is a matter of our being able to educate the state attorneys on how to argue the case and what constitutes abuse or how to interpret the signs of imminent danger."
SFSPCA is also actively fighting the USDA horse meat inspections ban, lifted by Congress in November. "We also support the still pending American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act (S. 1176/HR. 2966)" says Jordan, "which neither Florida Senators Bill Nelson nor Marco Rubio has signed on to co-sponsor, despite the growing problem in our state."
SFSPCA is facing it's toughest challenge yet closer to home; its leased property was sold to developers. It must move soon and raise $700,000 to purchase a permanent site that can provide for the rescue of up to 150 horses annually. SFSPCA is currently housing 66 horses and other animals looking for forever homes. With this many in its care, support from the community is desperately needed.
