To celebrate the tenth anniversary of Art Basel Week in Miami, Paws 4 You Rescue accepted an invitation to partner up with Hope International for Art Zoo.  Art Zoo was a fun-filled afternoon along the Miami River at Finnegan's River with animal themed art installations including sculptures, paintings and performance artists.

Hope and Carol
"There is so much serious art and scenesters seeking the hottest parties during this action packed week, I wanted to offer something on the lighter side in the opposite direction and bring in some furry friends to warm the heart and soul.  After all, dogs are man's best friend," remarks Hope Gainer of Hope International. "What better way to share your art passion with your
best friend?"

Guests brought their dog (or pig) to Art Zoo and visited with all the Paws 4 You Rescue adoptable puppies and dogs. Click here to see the gallery of photos by Debora Rosenn and Janet Perales.

Thank you to all the sponsors, donors, guests, artists, performers and photographers for making the day very special.

Save with Seasonal Sales

Post holiday sales are great ways to pick up items at steep discounts. Most pet supply stores have holiday clearance events, but these great buys often get passed by.  After all, no self respecting pup wants to play with a stuffed candy cane come springtime.

With a bit of organization, you can take advantage of these savings. You probably already have a storage bin for most holidays. When you bring home a post holiday clearance item, store it in your bin. Now your dog has a brand new toy waiting for her when you roll out the bin the following season!

This strategy can also work for the toys she's been playing with. When you pack up your household decoratoins at the close of the holiday season, look around for what your pup accumulated. Don't keep rawhide or food treats, or any toy that's too worn. Plush, cloth or rubber toys that are still in good shape can be packed away for next season.  First clean them - run through the dishwasher or washing machine, or wash by hand with warm, soapy water. Dry them completely and be sure no water has seeped in side. Then toss the item in your holiday bin and your dog will be thrilled to see an old favorite next holiday season.

No more Valentine squeaky toys underfoot during your 4th of July cookout!

Ideas for Bored Kids & Dogs

Next time you're plagued by chants of how bored your children are, be ready with a project idea: Suggest your children document your dog.

The youngest ones can draw pictures or write stories starring their furry sibling. Or let them snap photos of your dog over a few days - if they're too young to handle a camera, make this step a joint effort. Organize the photos into a scrapbook to create a "day in the life" type of book.

Paws 4 You Rescue has many adoptable beagles

Older children might enjoy uploading photos to a computer and editing them to create a slideshow. Children comfortable with a video camera can have fun shadowing their dog for a few days, or helping her show off all her tricks, then editing the results in a mini-movie.

With so many computer programs aimed at beginners, computer-oriented kids could set up a doggie website and use it to upload photos and interesting stories. This would be especially welcome if a family member is away at college or in the service. If your dog favors her privacy, make the site password-protected.

Whatever your children's talents - painting, making up jingles, working with clay - suggest they let their imaginations loose on the family pooch.  You'll end up with a great keepsakes of both your dog and your children's creative growth.

Hard to Discard

Falcor is available for adoption
How many chewed up, dingy toys does your dog dog stash away in her hiding spots? Although regular cleaning can help prolong the life of old favorites, sometimes hygiene and safety must prevail.

Here are some guidelines for knowing when it's time to part with a toy:
  • If your dog is able to chew off bits of plastic.
  • If wear has left deep scratches or bite marks, trapping moisture and becoming a breeding ground for bacteria.
  • If a rope toy has unraveled, exposing potentially dangerous loose strings.
  • If a plush toy has holes in it or stuffing can be pulled out of the seams.
  • If a soft or fabric toy is so worn your dog can easily chew off pieces or get through to the squeaker inside.

It may be tough to toss a well-loved toy, so ease the pain by taking your dog on a shopping spree to pick out new ones. Pick up two of any favorites while you're at it, just in case.
