Please consider making a Holiday Donation of $25.00

|

Ana Sanchez, resident Realtor at Paws 4 You (and RE/MAX agent) has created a special program for P4Y fans, where half of her net commission is donated to the Rescue in your name. Just sell or buy a home through Ana and expect a check to P4Y next day following the closing. Having a regular stream of donations, regardless of amount, can make a meaningful impact on our abilities to plan facilities improvements, rescue more dogs and provide those with special needs the costly, life saving veterinary care they require. Ana is a Certified Distressed Property Expert and REO designated. If you're thinking about buying or selling, you'll likely be selecting a realtor and someone will earn that commission anyway. Work with Ana and you'll get a top notch Realtor and make an important donation to P4Y. There's no limit and no sale is too small or too large. Your gift could be $2,000 or $20,000 or more! Remember, RE/MAX Realty offers a global network of agents so if your real estate goals mean buying or selling in another city, state or country, let Ana refer you to a fellow RE/MAX agent and any referral fee she's entitled to will also be split with Paws 4 You. For more details: Reach Ana direct at 305.793.2548 or ana@paws4you.org Help us save more lives and achieve your real estate goals! |

November is a busy month for everyone, including Paws 4 You Rescue. Just as we are winding down from our successful Casino Night at Cauley Square, volunteers are gearing up for Holiday picture season!
Visit with us at Island Veterinary Clinic, Key Biscayne on Saturday, December 3 from 12-4pm to have your picture taken with Sandy Paws. It's a yearly tradition that the local community enjoys. If you can't make it but would like a family picture with Santa (or just your pup), Santa Claws will be at the PetSmart across from The Falls on Sunday, December 4, 11 & 18 from 11-4pm. Proceeds benefit our Rescue group during these times and days.
Also on Saturday, December 3 from 1-5pm, Paws 4 You Rescue will be celebrating Art Basel Week. We were invited by Hope International to be part of an art happening at Finnegan's River. This unique and fun art exhibition of animal themed art titled "Art Zoo" will feature original works of art. Proceeds of the event will be donated to Paws 4 You Rescue. So bring your dog and socialize with us as well as art collectors, VIPs and animal lovers. Please email events@paws4you.org for more details on any upcoming event.

Raffle prizes were top of the line and the silent auction had beautiful jewelry and one of a kind beagle paintings from Dean Russo out of New York. Dinner from Village Chalet under the stars was delicious as were the scrumptious cupcakes. All the blackjack tables were full the entire night, as well as the craps and roulette tables. Casino Party Nights Florida, once again, had a beautiful setup and professional croupiers making this a very entertaining gaming experience.

Top Tips from Victoria Stillwell

Dee of Applause Your Paws Dog Training with
Victoria Stillwell at the 2011 APDT Annual Educational Conference and Trade Show in San Diego last month
|
1. Train positively: When you get a dog, you need a trainer. Find one who uses positive reinforcement and educate yourself about the philosophy. You can find more information about positive reinforcement and look for trainers in your area by visiting positively.com. 2. Think dog: Try to think about things from your dog's point of view. Learn about how your dog perceives the world and take time to understand her. It will make things easier for both of you. 3. Exercise: This is so important. You must give your dog stimulation throughout the day. Our dogs really live in sensory-deprived environments, therefore, it's up to you to give your dog the physical activity she needs. 4. Play together: Play time is extremely important. It is the one thing we as two species have in common. We both love to play, so find out what your dog enjoys most and spend some time together. 5. Have fun: Dog ownership should be mutually beneficial, but so often it isn't. Yet it can become that again. Continue to learn about your dog and apply that knowledge to find new ways to bond. |
Story of Maera

Melissa and Joey with Maera, now fully recovered
after major orthopedic surgery
|
At the time of this photo and interview, it's been three months since the Wilsons adopted Maera (formerly known as Princess), a Paws 4 You Rescue dog you may remember hearing about earlier this year.
In May the call came from Miami Dade Animal Services (MDAS) regarding Princess, a young female Dobie. She was found on the side of the road and left for dead. She had a splintered pelvis, a broken femur, and collapsed lung. Without the resources to care for her, MDAS turned to Paws 4 You and its network of volunteers. Paws staff reacted quickly, knowing this would be an urgent and intensive care situation, and expensive undertaking. Volunteers simultaneously obtained surgery opinions and began fundraising efforts for Princess. That's where you all came in, in addition to generous support from the 911 Dobie Rescue. Altogether we raised over $5,000 for Princess's care - thanks to all of you who answered our call for help. She had two surgeries, weeks apart. She wanted to live and everyone who laid eyes on her could see that. Our dedicated volunteer and Dobie aficionada, Judi Hess, oversaw Princess's care, eventually taking her home for recovery, literally single-handedly carrying her out numerous times daily for potty and hand feeding her until she could stand, then treating her for a secondary, stress related mange outbreak. Melissa and Joey, featured in this family photo, heard the news and followed Princess's progress closely. Melissa tells us..."We had recently lost our 13 year old boxer, Misha, and our four year old boxer, Maddie, was alone and sad. We were devastated with our loss but knew the time was right for a second dog and we wanted to rescue". "Joey always had a love for Dobies and when we saw Princess (now Maera) despite being bruised and broken, she was so sweet and lovable. She nuzzled her head in our hands and while she recovered all we could do was worry about how she was doing. For weeks I checked on her progress. All I could think about was the terrible pain this poor pup had been through. How sad to think someone could do this to a dog and just keep driving, leaving her helpless and alone to die. When she was ready for adoption we saw her again and knew she was the one. We tell her everyday how lucky she is despite all the bad stuff that she's been through".
Today Maera stands tall, walks well and her skin is looking great! Maera is a bundle of energy and is now sister to Maddie, who she loves to tackle, chase and whose head she likes to stick in her mouth. Maera is definitely a handful but we love her to pieces. She is loyal, loves attention, kisses and apparently doesn't realize her size as she seems to think she is lap dog. We hope to teach her to bike ride with us over the new few months helping her to release energy, exercise and giving her something exciting to look forward to every day. |

Turkey Day Treats
Include your dog in your Turkey Day celebration with this canine-friendly sweet potato recipe, courtesy of cookie cutter maker Ann Clarke Ltd.Sweet Potato Dog Treats These dog treats aren't hard and crunchy; they're more like cookies in texture. You can keep them in an airtight container for up to three days; to store them longer, put them in a zipper-lock bag in the freezer. If you like, use the 1-1/2 cups mashed, cooked sweet potato of pumpkin in place of the canned. 1) Preheat over to 350 degrees. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. 2) Process in a food processor or until smooth: - One 15-ounce can sweet potatoes, drained - 1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce - Two tablespoons olive oil 3) Add and process/pulse to blend: - Two cups barley flour - 2/3 cup whole-wheat flour - 1/2 cup nutritional yeast Turn dough out onto lightly floured counter, and knead two or three times if necessary to completely incorporate ingredients. Roll out to 1/4-inch thickness, cut into shapes, and transfer to prepared baking sheet. Scraps may be rerolled and cut. Score large cookies with a fork, if desired. Brush lightly with olive oil and bake for 20 to 25 minutes, until firm and lightly browned.
Makes about 12 large treats. |
