Sample Material
|
Simple Dog Bed
These beds are easy to make and easy to care for. To make them, you will need:
- Fabric, preferably with a dog motif or pattern
- Polyester fiberfill (6 or 8 oz.)
- Access to a sewing machine or ability to hand sew
- Thread
The beds can be cut to any size you need. Use a snuggle flannel, especially for winter, or a cotton print. Make sure whatever fabric you use is machine washable and safe to put into the dryer.
Fold the fabric so the right sides face each other - it will almost look inside out. Cut one layer of the fiberfill the size of the folded fabric. Then sew them together, attaching the fiberfill as you sew. Leave an opening about 10 to 12 inches long in the middle of one side. After sewing, turn the bed right-side out through the opening. After you turn it, simply sew the opening closed.
If you already have a dog bed, you can lay one of these on top of the regular bed. Then, when they get soiled or a little stinky, just throw them in the washer and dryer, and your doggie has a nice, fresh bed .
They can be sized to fit your dog's crate or carrier. Dogs appreciate having a soft padded blanket to sleep on. Or use them in your car: place one on the seat or in the cargo area and your pooch will be comfortable.
Have fun making your special pet a new bed! If you feel ambitious, sew a few to share with your friends at Paws 4 You Rescue. Happy sewing!

UPCOMING EVENT - DOGS WELCOME

Talking Toxin Safety
Cooler temperatures unlock fresh temptations for dogs - temptations that could be poisonous. If you think your dog has been poisoned, here's what to do:
- Stay calm.
- Get your dog away from the poison, and keep other pets away from it too.
- Make sure your dog is breathing normally and check for normal behavior.
- Contact your veterinarian, letting her know when, where and how you believe your dog was poisoned plus any symptoms you observe.
- Follow your veterinarian's advice. If you must take your dog to the clinic, bring along a sample of the poison and its packaging.
Don'ts: Don't try to treat your dog yourself, because medicines for humans can be poisonous to dogs. Don't try to make your dog vomit unless your veterinarian advises it.
Do's: Do wash contaminated skin or hair with mild dog shampoo and rinse well with water. Do keep houseplants out of dogs' reach and lock up pesticides and other chemicals, including household cleaners.
Do get help immediately. If your veterinarian can't be reached, call a 24-hour pet poison hot line - the Pet Poison Helpline at 800.213.6680 ($35 consultation fee) or the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty Animals Animal Poison Control Center at 888.426.4435 ($65 consultation fee).
One more thing: Keep phone numbers for your vet and the poison hot lines handy - you never know where curiosity may lead your pup into danger.

 Pet Sitter Checklist
Is your dog going to be under the extended care of a trusted pet sitter? Get organized with these steps.
Type up a document that includes:- Your dog's diet and exercise habits
- Nearby walking routes and parks, the best time of the day for each
- Your dog's microchip information and veterinary phone number
- Instructions for storing leftover canned food
- Your contact information and a local emergency contact
Leave these things in plain sight:- Your dog's collar and leach (with an extra, if possible)
- A flashlight for after-dark outings
- Plenty of cleanup bags
- Canned food and kibble; store the kibble in a secure, dog-proof container
- A can opener, if needed
Don't forget to:- Tell your neighbors to expect to see the pet sitter coming and going. Optionally, give trusted neighbor the pet sitter's number or number where you can be reached, should they notice a problem.
- Ask your pet sitter about her backup plans, in case she runs into an unexpected conflict.
- Re-evaluate your home's dog-proofing; with extra time alone, your dog may find new things to explore.

Dog Grass
|
How to Grow Dog Grass
Dogs like grass. They roll on it, dig holes and eat it. Grass is good for dogs and satisfies a natural urge. Many dogs do not have access to healthy grass. Wherever you live, you can grow a small patch of fresh grass for your pooch.
Options: 1. Raw seed. Many pet stores carry small packets of grass seed. The packets are usually a mixture of rye, barley and wheat seeds and can be planted in a small pot filled with potting soil or can be planted outdoors in a sunny location. Plant a handful of seeds as this grass grows in dense clumps. Cover the seeds lightly with soil. If they are in a pot, be sure it is in a well-lighted location. Keep the seeds damp until they sprout. After sprouting the grass needs to be in sunlight. Water the grass enough to prevent wilting. When it is a few inches tall, your pet can nibble the grass.
 | |
Pet Grass Kit
| 2. Seed kit. Pet stores and plant nurseries carry pet grass kits. These self-contained kits have a container, soil mixture and seed. The container is usually a plastic tray or a bag. Each kit has its own directions so read the package carefully for planter preparation. The seeds will usually sprout in 3 to 5 days. Keep them moist and water daily or when the soil mix is dry. After the seeds sprout, put the container near a sunny window. Water just enough to keep the soil moist. The dog can nibble the grass when it is a few inches tall. The grass will grow several inches tall and can be trimmed. Add the clippings to your dog's food.
3. Grass plant. Many stores offer a 4-inch container of growing grass
 | |
Grass Café
| ready for dog grazing. The grass is usually 3 to 4 inches tall. Take it home and water it as needed to keep the grass from wilting. If the grass turns light green, it probably needs more light. Move it closer to a window.
4. Transplant. Some dogs do not like to eat house grass. They prefer outdoor grass. For these dogs, transplant the growing grass plant directly into the outdoor soil. Dig a small hole where the grass will get regular water. The hole should be deeper and wider than the grass container. Put planting soil or potting soil in the hole and soak it with water. Turn the grass container upside down and gently pull out the entire clump including the roots. Place it in the middle of the hole with the roots resting on the wet soil. Do not break the grass clump apart. Pack soil around it and water thoroughly. Water regularly.
5. Seed heads. When outdoor grass matures, cut the seed heads off as they form. Wheat and oat seeds can get into dogs' ears and cause painful injuries and infections. When the grass gets tall and tough, pull out the clump and plant a fresh container of young grass.
Tips & Warnings: Do not spray dog grass with insecticides or other chemicals. Use an organic pet-safe or non-toxic product if insects are a problem.
