Records Are Being Set
Everyone across the country has been dealing with record breaking heat. So keep yourself and others cool by having a lemonade stand to benefit the dogs at Paws 4 You. Two groups of kids helped raise just under $200 by providing a delicious product to neighbors and friends.
Providing your dogs with iced treats will surely cool them off during these high temperatures. Tasty cold delights are not only fun for your dog (and you!) but are inexpensive too.
It is hot every day in South Florida, so please keep your dogs at home when running errands. Cracking the windows doesn't cut it when leaving your animals in parked cars.

When participating in events outdoors with your dogs and puppies, be sure to keep them hydrated and cool under the shade. Heatstroke is a deadly disease that can kill your beloved companion, even with emergency treatment. All animals are subject to it, just like people.
HOT News: Paws 4 You Rescue was in the news earlier this month when called upon to rescue a special little puppy. This puppy, who is being called Bill, was trapped under a car where good samaritans tried to help. Miami Fire Rescue was called. When brought to Miami-Dade Animal Services for vet care, Paws 4 You Rescue was contacted about saving the puppy.
Bill is doing well and in a foster home recuperating from sarcoptic mange. Soon he will be available for adoption. Thank you to all of the kind words and support. If you would like to donate in the name of Bill, please click the link below to make a $10 donation today.

Dogs in Hot Cars

Every year, dogs suffer and die when their guardians make the mistake of leaving them in a parked car-even for "just a minute"-while they run an errand. Parked cars are deathtraps for dogs: On a 78-degree day, the temperature inside a parked car can soar to between 100 to 120 degrees in just minutes, and on a 90-degree day, the interior temperature can reach as high as 160 degrees in less than 10 minutes. Animals can suffer brain damage or death from heatstroke in just 15 minutes. Beating the heat is extra tough for dogs because they can only cool themselves by panting and by sweating through their paw pads. If you see a dog left alone in a car, take down the car's color, model, make, and license plate number. Have the owner paged in the store, or call local humane authorities or police. Have someone keep an eye on the dog. Don't leave the scene until the situation has been resolved. If police are unresponsive or too slow and the dog's life appears to be in imminent danger, find a witness (or several) who will back up your assessment, take steps to remove the suffering animal, and then wait for authorities to arrive. Watch for heatstroke symptoms such as restlessness, excessive thirst, heavy panting, lethargy, lack of appetite, dark tongue, rapid heartbeat, fever, vomiting, or lack of coordination. If a dog shows any of these symptoms, get her or him into the shade immediately and call your veterinarian. Lower the animal's body temperature gradually by providing water to drink, applying a cold towel or ice pack to the head, neck, and chest, or immersing the dog in lukewarm (not cold) water. PETA offers leaflets that can be placed on vehicles to remind people never to leave unattended animals inside. For information on ordering PETA's "Don't Let Your Dog Get Hot Under the Collar" leaflet, please click here.

Puppy Proofing Your Home
A puppy's natural curiosity can turn disastrous if he gets

into the wrong thing. Watch out for these top trouble spots: In the home- electrical cords
- garbage
- people food - especially chocolate, raisins, and gum
- animal bones
- any chemicals - including household cleaners
- socks or other items made from fabric or string
- medication and vitamins

In the yard- Roundup weed and grass killer
- Bufo Toads
- antifreeze
- azaleas
- rhododendron
- oleander
- calla lilies
- hydrangea
- broken fencing
Consider creating a "safe zone" inside your home for times when your puppy must stay alone. Use an exercise pen, crate or baby gate to secure his special spot, and fill it with safe chew and other toys to keep him busy - and safe - while you are away.

All in the Family: When play gets carried away

Dogs and children are great playmates, but children may become upset if they're then recipient of an accidental nip. Puppies and young dogs that get too rough while playing are normal. They just don't yet realize that they're too rambunctious in their play with people. Once they learn that people are more fragile than other dogs, they temper their play. Your child can help enforce limits by reacting with a sharp "No!" when the dog gets too jumpy or mouthy, and by turning his back until the dog settles. It is also helpful if your child understands the difference between a playful pup and an aggressive dog. A dog who's playing will be relaxed and loose in his movements; his tail will be wagging, his face will look like he's having fun. An aggressive dog's demeanor will be rigid and

tense. He will probably freeze before nipping. His tail might be wagging, but it will be firm and stiff. Teach children if they ever feel uncomfortable with a playful pup, they should slowly walk away from the dog and avoid screaming, running or flailing arms.

Take the Bite Out of Teething

Poor pup! Just when those 28 puppy teeth come in, the 42 adult teeth start clambering to the surface. You can help ease the pain - naturally.
In addition to providing chew toys, putting ice chips in the water bowl, and massaging the gums (sound familiar, Mom?), herbal remedies may also help. Chamomile can calm uncomfortable pups when the tea is given as a drink. Steep one teaspoon of dried herb in 8 ounces of water and let cool.

Likewise, the homeopathic remedy Chamomilla can be used, with a low potency given two or three times a day. Try freezing aloe vera juice into cubes or in a paper cup that can be peeled away. Rub the frozen juice on your puppy's gums to soothe irritation and banish pain. The teething stage lasts several months. Then hid the shoes from those brand-new pearly whites!

HOMESPUN NATURAL
Looking for an even more natural solution to clean pet messes? Simply open your pantry door. For generations, housekeepers have used baking soda and vinegar to tackle stains and odor.
Baking soda, for example, absorbs pet odors in carpets and upholstery. Simply sprinkle it on the surface, let it sit for a few hours and vacuum it up.
A mild vinegar solution (1/2 cup distilled white vinegar to 1 gallon water), in many cases, may be used to wipe down tile floors. It may also be used to remove carpet pet stains.
