Ruby's Story
FOSTER PROGRAM BENEFITS RESCUED DOG

Just about a year ago, Paws 4 You Rescue saved this sweet shepherd. Ruby was abandoned and tied to a tree in northwest Miami-Dade.

From the start, she has been very shy. She does not like being a part of the adoption events every weekend and hides under the table. For that reason, she has been overlooked.

Ruby is very well behaved and eager to please.  Canine Counselors worked with her for six weeks helping to build some confidence. Ruby needed to move to the next step, being surrounded by people that could show her that she is indeed loved.

Paws 4 You volunteer, Tamara, fell in love with Ruby immediately.  Ruby's kind eyes and calm demeanor as well as her hug-able size attracted her to inquire about fostering.  Fostering is an important part of any Rescue.  In Ruby's case, she needs to be around people in order to build trust by continuing her confidence exercises.  Tamara won Ruby's heart the moment she walked in her house.  Ruby is doing great. Her entire foster family enjoys having her as part of their home and hopes the love shared will translate to an adoption.

Ruby now enjoys going to PetSmart on Sundays with her pal Tamara. They sit in the grass together and play with her favorite purple ball.

On April 17, celebrate PET PARENT'S DAY with us by honoring and appreciating the special people everywhere who open their hearts and lives to pets.  Special thanks goes to Tamara and all the foster families out there who share their homes.  No bones about it - foster pet parents are a unique breed.

What's in a Name?
CLASSIC, FUN OR POPULAR

Your dog's name says as much about you as it does your pet. The name you pick out can help define your relationship with your dog -- a more human name might mean your dog is no different than a child would be to you, while a name like "Hunter," "Tracker" or "Champ" might help illustrate a working dog's function in society. An offbeat name effectively displays your cleverness to your friends, while a popular, well-worn dog name might indicate a desire to cling to the comfortable, classic, tried and true. And other names might point out a fun or beloved quality or quirk of your pet's, be it a physical quality (think "Patch" or "Blackie") or part of his personality ("Dash," "Sugar," "Pop Tart").

But whether you're thinking quirky or popular, here are some things to keep in mind when naming your dog:

1. Choose a name your dog can recognize and respond to easily. One or two syllables is ideal. Your dog may have trouble coming to you if you're yelling "Maximillian IV!" from the other end of the dog park.

2. Pick a name your pet can grow into. "Baby" the dog won't be a baby forever.

3. A classic name will be easier to call your pup in public as opposed to "Killer" or something equally cruel or embarrassing.

4. If you must name your dog something long (show dogs sometimes have a sentence for a name, often including their kennel and title if they're champions), keep the shorter "call name" in mind, as that will most likely become your dog's working name.

If you're curious about what's popular in the dog name world, here are the Top 10 Dog Names on Dogster.

Popular Female Dog Names: Bella, Lucy, Daisy, Molly, Maggie, Chloe, Sadie, Sophie, Lola and Bailey

Popular Male Dog Names: Buddy, Max, Jake, Charlie, Rocky, Jack, Toby, Bailey, Buster and Bear

FOR GOLDIE

This young blond lab (mix) has a Golden personality, hence her name - Goldie.  She is fun and bright and very happy.  She was found as a stray and is recuperating from Demodex, which she most likely has had since birth.  This non-contagious condition can be treated successful with medication.

We are raising money to cover the medication and special baths needed over the course of the next few months.

Please consider donating TEN dollars today.

MINIMIZE MESS

Does the floor around your dog's water bowl resemble the sidewalk after a downpour? After an overzealous drink, most dogs drip and slobber their way across your kitchen. Minimize mess and prevent slipping hazards with these tips:

Beagle Puppies Available for Adoption

Curbside service: When your dog has worked up a big thirst - such as after a walk or playtime - offer her a drink outside.

Add absorbency: Lay a towel under the bowl, and replace as needed.  Or purchase a roll of outdoor carpeting, lay a section under the bowl, and replace when necessary.

Buy: Search your pet supply store for absorbent mats you can place under your dog's water bowl. Or try a water bowl specially designed to catch spills.

Relocate: Offer water away from your family's natural traffic patterns. Try a mudroom, spare bathroom or laundry closet - as long as no doors accidentally block access.

Double up: With smaller breeds, place their bowl inside a shallow tray or baking sheet. With large breeds, use a boot mat or kennel tray.

Go clean-cut: Ask our groomer about ways to trim bearded or very furry breeds to minimize soaked fur.

Keep a sponge mop nearby anyway - particularly if you have multiple dogs.  A few quick swipes and your floor is good as new.
