Happy New Year to all Paws 4 You Rescue Supporters!
 | | Chris with Lorenzo the Beagle |
Volunteering with Paws is a gratifying experience that is difficult to match! It warms our hearts to see homeless and neglected pets become beloved members of families, and we know that the dogs appreciate their new homes. Letters, e-mails, visits, and phone calls from adoptive families are constant reminders of the goodwill spread by pet rescue groups such as Paws 4 You Rescue. Animal lovers everywhere cringe when they hear about cruelty to an animal or animals that are abandoned and sent to shelters where they will be euthanized. Have you ever wondered what you could do to help an animal in need? By joining Paws 4 You in the world of rescue, we will show you one of the most satisfying ways to help both animals and people. We are always looking for volunteers to help with the many tasks it takes to run a successful rescue organization. Looking for a way to match your skills and interests with your love of animals? Paws 4 You needs help with everything from animal care to general office support; from staffing special events to working on creative projects. We need volunteers to hold our rescued dogs at weekly events, to apply communication and writing skills to apply for grants, and to disseminate information about our organization. Paws 4 You Rescue is looking for volunteers who are committed, caring ,and responsible to truly make a difference in the lives of the abandoned and homeless animals in our care. We need friendly, outgoing, and personable volunteers to help at adoption events. | | Lorenzo |
Due to the increasing number of dogs we are saving from euthanasia at Animal Services, Paws 4 You has added another PetSupermarket location to the event list. Please visit us at PetSupermarket in Coconut Grove on US 1 & SW 27th Avenue on the second and fourth Saturdays of each month from 11:00 am - 3:00 pm. If you come, you may meet Lorenzo, one of my favorite beagles, who is in the photo above with me. He has a heart shaped spot on his side and his face and eyes glow with kindness. When he is outside, Lorenzo wears a protective booty on his rear right foot because he suffered nerve damage as the result of a car accident (he was not driving!). He is seemingly unaware of this minor handicap and loves to run and play with other dogs, with whom he is quite popular! We need volunteers to hold our adoptable friends like Lorenzo, pass out information about the Paws 4 You Rescue, answer questions, share photos of and information about our dogs, and sell our Rescues Rock the Runway Calendars (if you haven't bought your copy yet, click here now!) at our events.
If you like variety, Paws 4 You Rescue travels around South Florida participating in many types of events. We will be at the Pet Fest at Cauley Square (22400 Old Dixie Highway) this Sunday, January 16th, from Noon until 4 o'clock. We would love to have volunteers come to help us at such events!
PetSupermarket on US1 and SW 132nd Street is having a huge party on January 22nd, and Paws 4 You has been invited to bring dogs and volunteers to help celebrate. Please e-mail me if you would like to participate with us and the Pups of Paws.

Further north, the Doggie Bag Café at 7310 Biscayne Boulevard has invited us to be a part of their Doggie Talent Search event on Sunday, January 23. Please come to help us, or enter your own best friend in the "So You Think Your Dog Has Talent?" show from 1-4 pm.
As you can tell, we have many activities in the month of January alone! Please accept my invitation to visit with us or join us as a volunteer. Making a difference in the life of one animal makes a person want to continue to help even more! HELP US SAVE A LIFE! by supporting our mission.
Hope to hear from you soon,
Chris Mack
Director of Volunteers chris@paws4you.org

Tips to Keep Your Pets Safe from Toxic Products
What may be great for house, may not be so great for your dog. We've all heard tragic stories of pets that were accidentally poisoned by everyday products. While some seem obvious (e.g., rat poison, paint, pain relievers, etc.), there are many household items that you may have never consider harmful. For instance, did you know that deodorant is poisonous? What about vitamins? Here's a list of other toxic items that you may not know about: |

| | Cocoa Mulch |
- Cocoa Mulch
- Wood shavings
- Poisonous household plants including azalea, aloe, hydrangea, honeysuckle, and birds of paradise
- Cleaning products such as Swiffer and fabric softener have been known to cause allergic reactions in pets
- Gum containing Xylitol
So, what is safe? Use all natural cleaning products, especially when you have a dog that likes to eat things off the floor. Also, keep plants out of your pets' reach, store cleaning products securely, and make garbage and recycling bins inaccessible to your pets. Still, the best rule of thumb is to remember that what may be safe for you, may not be safe for your pet so always keep on an eye your pets to make sure they aren't getting into things that could wind up hurting them.
If your dog is accidentally poisoned, call the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435. Keep this information readily available in a visible place in case of an emergency. Be prepared to provide the name of the poison your animal was exposed to, the amount, how long since they were exposed to the poison, symptoms they are showing as well as the species, breed, age, sex, and weight of your pet. A $65 consultation fee may be applied to credit card so also have payment information available.
For more information on dangerous household items visit www.aspca.com.
