 | | Carol with the owners of TORU at our Pawtini Pawty |
From the runway to glossy photos, Paws 4 You is proud to partner up with the owners of TORU for the next phase of Rescues Rock the Runway, a 2011 calendar featuring our adorable rescue pups. To help promote awareness for rescue groups and spay/neuter programs nationwide, long time friends and owners of TORU, Susan Levine and Vanessa Rossman, created the Rescue Wear line in 2009. To date, TORU has helped raise thousands of dollars for our organization through its popular doggy apparel designs. As you may recall, Rescue Wear made its debut one year ago at the premiere charity event, Rescues Rock The Runway, at the Mayfair Hotel in Coconut Grove. Paws 4 You adoptable dogs walked the "dogwalk" modeling the new line. Rescue Wear continues to grow with its increasing popularity nationwide. Designing a 2011 Calendar featuring rescue dogs only made sense as the next step! Sitting with famed photographer Andrew Brusso, our dogs got a taste of fame. All behaving very well, these dogs spent the afternoon striking a pose for their calendar debut. These beautiful calendars are available for purchase for $16.95 through torudogs.com. Purchasing one for yourself and/or friends and family directly benefits the dogs at Paws 4 You Rescue. Thank you TORU for being one of the most creative (and generous) companies who understand our plight to save as many dogs from euthanasia in South Florida as possible. If you are out and about in the Brickell area over the weekend, be sure to stop by and say HI to us at the Brickell Sunday Marketplace event. Thanks to B3 Freshly Baked Dog Biscuits, we will be showing adoptable dogs and passing out information on our Rescue. Volunteers will have items from our shampoo line for sale so if you haven't had a chance to order from our online store, be sure to pick up some up this weekend. Paws 4 You Rescue has signed up to be all over town! Be sure to check our Events Page for details on our Dog Bar Adoption Events. The first one we did at the Midtown Location was a great success and we are excited about meeting all the dog friendly businesses and people in this area. Look for us on October 16 and October 30 from 12:30-4 pm at 3301 NE 1st Avenue at Midtown 4. Be sure to stop by and donate $5 for a Macy's Shop for a Cause coupon on October 16th! We will be outside of Macy's at the Falls all day on Sale Day raising much needed funds for our organization. Have a fun and safe Halloween! - Carol

What is CGC? Take dog training to the next level with the AKC's Canine Good Citizen test.
Earning a Canine Good Citizen certificate is not only an honor, it can open the door to many other opportunities for your dog. The American Kennel Club developed the program in 1989 to inspire pet owners to teach their dogs good manners, and any dog - purebred or mixed breed - can take the test. You can train your dog at home for the CGC test or take classes. Many trainers offer CGC classes to help dogs prepare for the test, which determine how well a dog behaves as a member of society.Tests include accepting a friendly stranger, sitting politely for petting, having a well-groomed appearance, walking on a loose leash, walking through a crowd, following the Sit, Down and Stay commands, coming when called, reacting appropriately with another dog, reacting appropriately to distractions, and behaving appropriately during a supervised separation from you. Dogs who pass all of the test criteria are awarded a CGC Certificate."The Canine Good Citizen program was designed to reward well-behaved dogs who are stellar companions and members of the community," says Dee Hoult of Applause Your Paws. Today, some canine service programs require or recommend CGC certification before training for their programs, such as pet therapy work, search and rescue, or as a service dog.To learn more about the program or sign up for a Canine Good Citizen 5-week course, visit ApplauseYourPaws.com. Dee is an official Evaluator in our local area and there is no additional cost to test for the Certificate at the end of her class. Should your dog already have the needed skills to test for CGC, Dee will evaluate your dog for a $25 donation to Paws 4 You Rescue.

Eight Ways to Involve Kids in Rescue
From teens to elementary schoolchildren, here are eight fun ideas to pique kid's interest in homeless animals and teach love and respect for pets. Groups at schools, community centers, churches, libraries and other likely gathering places are great opportunities to get kids involved. Coordinate with the venue, parents and rescue group.
1. Field Trip: Organize a trip to a fundraising event or adoption fair. If possible, arrange for youngsters to assist at the event. Even younger kids can help by passing out fliers. Ask for a table for a bake sale or crafts sale and donate proceeds to an animal-related cause.
2. Humane Classes: All children benefit from learning about empathy for others, including animals. Set up a humane education class that covers the responsibilities of owning a pet and humane treatment of animals.
3. Four-Star Prize Board: Award prizes, even if it's just gold stars, candy or a trophy, for kids who raise the most money or corral the most donations for a shelter or fundraiser. Tout the winners on the shelter's website, as well as in school publications or local newspapers.
4. Show and Tell: Bring in a therapy dog or a well-behaved dog in need of adoption to emphasize compassion, gentle handling and respect for animals. Set up a permanent program at your local school, church or club.
5. Online Projects: Internet-savvy, creative teens can be a tremendous asset. Recruit their help in updating a shelter or rescue group's website. Ask them to take photos and write descriptions of adoption-ready dogs. After approval, have them post the info on line. Brainstorm ideas for marketing, website updates, exciting contests, volunteer opportunities and fundraisers.
6. Story Time: Tell kids the story of an abandoned dog who was happily adopted. Bring in photos of the dog with his new family or have the owner and dog stop by for a visit.
7. Celebrate: On special occasions, like birthdays and holidays, ask a classroom or kid's group to bring donations of pet food or an item on your local shelter's wish list, instead of cards or gifts.
8. Social Clubs: Take a child to your local shelter to help walk and socialize dogs and other animals. Human interaction makes the dogs happier, less stressed and more adoptable. A scout group may be able to earn badges by volunteering.
Rescued dogs may be more sensitive than other dogs. Supervise kids closely at all times when they're around the animals.
With the right direction, kids' enthusiasm, energy, creativity, curiosity and affection can lend a huge helping hand to homeless animals and local shelters or rescues. At the same time, their interaction with animals and charitable work will create positive and lasting impressions.

Five Must-have iPhone Apps for dog owners
There are more than 150,000 apps available for the iPhone, and a growing number are devoted to our pets. Whether you need to organize your dog's medical information or find the nearest pet store in an unfamiliar city, there's an app out there. Here are five that may interest you:
MiPets: Keeping a folder of important paperwork is easy, but you can't carry it around all the time. That's why we like MiPets. The app offers a basic way to track upcoming vet appointments, microchip numbers, medications and food information for an unlimited number of pets. You can email the file to a dog sitter or boarding kennel.
Petfinder.com: This is a terrific free resource for finding thousands of adoptable dogs, puppies and other animals around the country. Once you've found your next furry friend, you can share the listing via Facebook, Twitter or email.
Pet Safe: Did you know that tulips are toxic to dogs? The Pet Safe app contains a searchable database of plants harmful to dogs, cats and horses, compiled by expert toxicologists from the American Society of Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. You'll find toxicity symptoms for each plant and a direct link to the Animal Poison Control Center hotline.
PetSnap: We love taking pictures of our dogs, but getting them to look at the camera is a different story. This app contains 32 different sounds that catch your dogs' attention - just turn up the volume on your phone. Once you've snapped the perfect shot, add a picture frame and send it to friends.
PawTrotter: Finding dog-friendly businesses can be a challenge, especially when traveling. The PawTrotter app has more than 130,000 pet stores, dog-friendly hotels, veterinarians and dog parks. You don't even have to enter an address - the app uses the iPhone's GPS to determine your location and find businesses near you.
