Dear Friends,
|
Carol with Charlene | I hope you had a wonderful long Labor Day weekend! We kicked off the beginning of Fall with a fabulous Pawtini Pawty at The Biltmore! We are both thrilled and honored to have been a part
of the first pet friendly event at the Biltmore Hotel. It
was such a pleasure to see the community come together with their pets for this
unique event. Best of all, the
proceeds will help us rescue hundreds of more dogs. Thank you to all the volunteers, participants, guests and of course The
Biltmore for all the efforts that went into planning and executing this
successful fundraiser. Charlene the Treeing Walker Coonhound made a guest appearance at the August 25th Pawtini Pawty and she was such a lady greeting everyone with her big smile! Charlene is a wonderful dog who enjoys having fun with all her hound buddies and also likes to relax next to her humans at the end of the day. Dog Fancy's September Issue has a complete profile on Charlene's breed which traces back to English Foxhounds. They state that dogs, like Charlene, are eager to please, loving, intelligent and skilled. These hounds are good with children and other pets as well. In conclusion, Charlene will be a terrific family companion to everyone in the home. September / October Issue | Speaking of current issues! If you haven't received your copy yet, please check out the latest issue of DogsAreOK Magazine. My dogs and I are very honored to be their cover model. The article gave me a chance to discuss Paws 4 You Rescue and how much saving dogs' lives means to me. Did you catch us this past Saturday at the Pinecrest PetSupermarket? The Rescue will have a monthly adoption event at this location the first Saturday of every month from 9am through 1pm. Please visit with us and meet some of our adoptable dogs and get to know our organization. And keep an eye on our website for more September happenings! Carol with Debora Rosenn of R&S Photography | A special thank you goes out to Debora who has been taking photographs for our organization for several years now. A picture does say a thousand words and not only are our dogs being adopted faster but the public loves to see all the pictures from all the events that the Rescue participates in with our dogs. We are always looking for adult and young volunteers to help us with all the events we do every weekend. There are other ways to help the Rescue such as having a lemonade stand and donating the proceeds! Thank you Mikayla and Matthew for working so hard and giving all your profits to Paws 4 You Rescue. That is very thoughtful and all the dogs appreciate it! Enjoy the rest of the week and we hope to see you at PetSmart this weekend for our THREE-day adoption event! Sincerely, Carol CaridadThank You Spotlight:
Mikayla and her brother had a lemonade stand last month and donated all the proceeds. Thank you on behalf of the dogs! | |
Engaging Your Dogs Indoors
|
The hot weather can keep you and your dog from taking your daily jog or engaging in other outdoor exercise. For you, that's no problem - you can just take your outdoor run indoors to the treadmill at your local gym. However, the welcome that the gym extends to you doesn't usually include your dog, even though he needs daily exercise just as much as you do. Not to worry, though - with a little creativity, you can give your canine companion a good indoor workout. Here are some ways to do just that. Go into hiding. A good game of hide-and-seek will not only keep your dog moving, but will give him mental exercise as well. Tell your dog to stay (or have someone hold him) and then go hide. Once you're hidden, call your dog and let him use his nose to find you. You can also play hide-and-seek by hiding your dog's favorite toy or treat, and then letting him find it. Get him jumping. Make some jumps by laying broomsticks and mop handles over chairs, covering them with towels, and having your dog jump over them. Another option is to create a mini-agility course in an unfinished basement. You can also encourage him to jump on and off furniture -- assuming he's already got furniture privileges and is big enough to engage in this activity without hurting himself. Boost his brainpower. A dog doesn't always need physical exertion to get the stimulation he craves -- mental exercise works, too. "Mental exercise is as tiring as physical exercise," says Dee Hoult of Applause Your Paws here in Miami. Dee suggests teaching your dog a new trick, doing some refresher obedience exercises or giving him an interactive toy such as a Kong that's stuffed with treats for your dog to dig out. Check out one of the Doggie Deeva's video about freezing Kongs for your four legged friends by clicking here. Do the freeze dance. Teach your dog to run, jump and be crazy until you freeze [stand perfectly still in one place. When you freeze the dog has to sit. When you are unfrozen [start moving again], the dog can race around again. This is a good game for teaching impulse control, especially to younger dogs. Exert some pull. A tug-of-war session can burn off lots of excess canine energy, the exception being the overaroused dog who can't learn to play by the rules. For mannerly dogs, using only one toy for tugging, keeping that toy away from the dog unless the owner wants to play, teaching the dog to let go of the toy when asked, stopping the game if the dog's teeth touch skin or clothing, and taking possession of the toy more often than the dog does. By employing these strategies, you and your dog may find that the unbearable weather outside leads to delightful times inside. |

Animal Bones Can Cause Damage
|
If they only knew, dogs from coast to coast might be howling over this advice from the government.
The Food and Drug Administration issued a reminder to consumers to toss out bones from their meals rather than feed them to their pets.
"Some people think it's safe to give dogs large bones, like those from ham or a roast," said Carmela Stamper, a veterinarian in the Center for Veterinary Medicine at the FDA. "Bones are unsafe no matter what their size."
The FDA spelled out 10 reasons it's a bad idea to give doggie a real bone.
Among them: broken teeth, mouth or tongue injuries, bones or fragments of bones getting stuck in a dog's esophagus or even its stomach, which might require surgery. Bone fragments also can cause constipation.
Worse, it could be deadly. Giving your dog a real bone could cause a bacterial infection of the abdomen, called peritonitis, when fragments poke holes in a dog's stomach or intestines. "Your dog needs an emergency visit to your veterinarian because peritonitis can kill your dog," says the caution from the FDA.

Giving Back to the Community
|
Jeannie with Juliette |
"Giving Back" implies that you have been "Given To", and if you're reading this, then you are among the more fortunate in your community. You have jobs, housing, and all the necessities of life. If there is still a feeling of emptiness inside, it might be because you know there is more to life than the basics, and you have a deep inner need to do something more purposeful with your life. One of the great ways that many people fulfill this little empty spot is "volunteering". Here is what my family did and how it has affected our lives.
Almost exactly two years ago we felt the need to give back and do something we love - work with animals, especially dogs. It started innocently enough with walking into Petsmart one Sunday and meeting the crew at Paws 4 You Rescue and volunteering to be a foster parent. We got our first dog the next day and have been on a roll - in two short years we have fostered over 150 dogs and puppies in our home. At times it has been crazy, at times peaceful and quiet - but life is certainly not boring! In our house we specialize in taking in puppies without mothers, or moms and their litters or special needs cases. Not many people are willing to do that. We have had dogs for as little as 24 hours (quick and wonderful adoption) or as long as six months (a senior dog with severe cardiac problems who was not adoptable and died in our arms on Thanksgiving day).
Why do rescue groups like this exist and what do they need to survive? They exist because people do not spay and neuter their dogs, and often dump them when they get pregnant because it becomes "inconvenient". Shown here is Juliette, whoJuliette is available for adoption | lived with us for two weeks before she delivered her four puppies in our guest room. Juliette is a GREAT companion. She walks well on a leash, completely house broken, enjoys lots of pats on the head as well as belly rubs. And she LOVES car rides.
Paws 4 You needs financial support from the community in order to continue its mission and save more animals. We cannot exist without the tax deductible donations of good, caring people such as yourselves. Your donations pay for food, medical treatment, shelter upkeep and the myriad of needs that occur on a daily basis. We need foster families and volunteers, but not everyone has the time or the situation to help in that way. One of the ways you can certainly "give back" to the community is to make a donation to help save lives - lives of the sweet and innocent little ones who cannot save themselves and have no voice of their own. At a recent luncheon sponsored by the South Florida Veterinary Foundation, Miami City Commissioner Mark Sarnoff spoke about the debt people owe to animals for the enrichment that the four-legged friends bring to our lives. Whether therapy dogs, service dogs, search and rescue dogs or faithful family members providing unconditional love and comfort, they deserve our support!
Please mail your tax deductible donations to Paws 4 You Rescue, PO Box 561163, Miami FL 33256.
And if you are in the market for a new best friend, please remember to adopt a rescue dog to help eliminate puppy mills! All the little friends say "woof" to you.
Adoption Spotlight:
Molly (Gucci) is a wonder dog! We haven't had one major problem with her. She's splendid! This is what we keep telling people: "You know that expression, 'If it's too good to be true, it probably is'? Well, now we know there are exceptions to that saying. Molly is definitely one of them. We know she's happy to be with us, and we know we're happy that she is. Molly will never be neglected or suffer again. - Rick & Bruce |

On Wednesday, August 25, Paws 4 You Rescue welcomed over 500 guests and their dogs to a unique
cocktail reception dubbed the Pawtini Pawty. The event marked the first ever pet-friendly event at
landmark Biltmore Hotel, which raised $20,000 for Paws 4 You Rescue. Distinguished guests of honor included Mayor Don
Slesnick and his wife, Jeannett. Guests enjoyed unlimited hors d'oeuvres and
delicious signature Pawtini drinks such as the Blue Beagle and Chocolate
Labtini while their beloved pooches wagged tails at a social gathering that
rivaled an average day at the dog park with such attractions as a dog food
bar. In addition, the canine focused event included dog-friendly
businesses, such as local pet sitting services, dog trainers, specialty pet
stores and gourmet dog treat bakers. "I enjoyed my stay among the dogs and people," said
Mayor Slesnick. "My wife, Jeannett, was committed to support the event. I
walked through the entire ballroom and visited with many of my constituents. I
am glad that the event proved to be a success for the organization."
