Carol with Drew | Sure feels like summer out there! Drew and I hope you are keeping your entire family cool during this hot season!
My friend Drew is a small black spaniel mix who made his television debut on Univision's morning show last month. Drew learned an entire obstacle course in less than an hour! This young and handsome fellow also enjoys playing and running in the grass with his canine buddies. Please click here to read more about this smart guy!
The humid air reminds us that Hurricane Season is here. Paws 4 You Rescue is proud to have a plan in case the weather becomes too rainy and windy for our dogs. Plan Hurri-K9 is designed to place our dogs in temporary foster homes during hurricanes that are not life threatening to humans. For those storms that we are able to ride out in the safety of our homes, we are looking for volunteers who are willing to foster a dog during the hurricane. Check out our foster page or email foster@paws4you.org if you would like more information.
The warm air doesn't stop our volunteers and supporters! There is much going on with our Rescue this summer. We have our FOURTH Annual Putt 4 Paws Golf Tournament at the famed Doral Resort this Sunday (tee time at 8am). We are looking for just two more foursomes so please check out our website for additional information or email golf@paws4you.org. This will be our biggest Tournament yet so we need your support!
Each year veterinarians from the South Florida Veterinary Foundation (SFVF) celebrate the outstanding contributions of Rebecca, Dr. Oliveira and Carol | individuals and corporations who increase awareness and quality services for animal related issues during its annual awards luncheon. Congratulations are in order for Jeannie and Dr. Oliveira who were both recipients of the People, Pets & Vets Award. Rebecca was nominated and as a foster and a volunteer at Paws 4 You, we are very proud that our volunteers are being recognized.
I would like to also like to thank the Rotary Club of Coral Gables for volunteering one Saturday afternoon bathing all of our adoptable dogs. We welcome any groups who want to spend a Saturday or Sunday bathing our pups getting them ready for the weekend adoption events.
Speaking of which, we have EXCITING news to announce...Paws 4 You Rescue is now holding FOUR adoption events EVERY weekend! We do need volunteers to watch over adoptable dogs and all the PUPPIES we will be showing in the upcoming weeks. So please email volunteer@paws4you.org if you have time this summer to HELP US SAVE A LIFE!
Hope to see you this weekend!

Rescue Dogs + Obedience Training = Pup Perfection by Misty Buck
Ever heard the expression, "a diamond in the
rough"? As it turns out, this
saying can apply to dogs too. At
Paws 4 You Rescue our mission is to rescue dogs from euthanasia lists at local
animal shelters and help them find loving permanent homes.
Lenny with William from Canine Counselors | Our volunteers work endless hours each
day to give shelter dogs a second chance. Sometimes the dogs we rescue have, for one reason or
another, been properly socialized and are therefore easier to adopt. On the other hand, we have dogs that
are wonderful animals but for a variety of reasons need a little extra TLC to
be more compatible with their human counterparts.
For more than a year, Paws 4 You Rescue volunteer
Judi Berger has been working with the team at Canine Counselors to teach
basic obedience lessons to our rescued dogs. It is truly amazing how fast they learn and how proper
training makes a huge impact in finding them homes and giving their owners
fantastic companions. Judi with Peter and William of Canine Counselors |
"We have had incredible results with the dogs we
train from Paws 4 You Rescue," says Zeik with William | Peter Arencibia, owner of Canine
Counselors. "Just because you
don't know a dog's history, it doesn't mean they can't be trained. Actually, most of the dogs we work with
wind up finding a home before we have completed the six to eight week training
period. When that happens, we
continue to work with the dog and will incorporate the owner into the lessons,
which greatly improves the effectiveness of dog's obedience at home."
Berger offers some additional advice: Ruby | "When taking a
rescue dog I recommend socializing them and providing them with clear boundaries. Take them for walks around your neighborhood before bringing them
into house. Keep a four-foot leash on them while inside house the first week,
except for at night. Show them where their place is by providing them a spot
for sleeping and a spot where the family hangs out. This way you Ruby learning 'down' | can teach them
to 'go to place' and ignore bad behavior and reward good behavior. Most importantly be positive and
loving. Dogs live in the moment not the past."
Simba | Paws 4 You Rescue currently has several dogs in the
Canine Counselors program and they are all up for adoption. Here's what the team at Canine
Counselors had to say about the dogs currently in their program: -
Zeik: A very gentle dog, Zeik needed socialization and
touch therapy. He is young, but calm.
-
Ruby: Although Ruby is a very independent dog, she took to
the obedience training well and is doing great.
-
Simba: Simba is a very smart dog and
Simba | has been great to work
with. He loves attention, which has made the obedience training easier.
-
Lenny: One of our "performers," Lenny is extremely
intelligent and has done very well in our program.
Simba learning 'down' |
Additional details on Zeik, Ruby, Simba and Lenny as well as our other awesome adoptable dogs are available on our website at paws4you.org or click on their pictures. You can also stop by to see us at any of our four adoption events over the weekend.

A special thank you to Judi Berger and Peter
Arencibia for their time contributing to this article and for making a
life-changing difference in our rescues. Also thanks Debora Rosenn for the great pictures!

Another Happy Tail by Boomer's new family
A lot of consideration went into getting another dog. Our twin daughters, Giulia and Olivia grew up with standard poodles. But when our black standard Chad died a few years ago, we decided to wait until the girls were a little older before adding another dog to our family. The girls spent the past three years dog-sitting many different dogs in our home to show us they were responsible enough to take care of a dog of their own. We weren't sure what kind of dog we wanted, but set on a non-shedding breed. And the girls were adamant that they wanted to rescue a dog instead of seeking out a breeder. We were very torn between wanting a dog that was large enough to rough-house and really play with the girls, or getting a small dog that could come everywhere with us. We searched many local shelters and internet sites for rescue dogs. We saw the picture of Boomer on the Paws 4 You rescue site, but were very undecided because after having standard poodles we really thought we wanted something smaller. Ana, a volunteer at Paws 4 You Rescue, was great at helping us make a decision and finally convinced us to at least make the drive to Miami to meet Boomer. And boy are we glad she did!
We could not imagine life without Boomer. He has grown quite a bit in the past two months, but we are pretty sure he will be the perfect "medium" sized dog for us when he is completely grown. Ana took time in answering all of our questions over the phone and by email. Everyone at the Paws 4 You event at PetSmart was terrific. It was mostly love at first sight when we saw Boomer, but we did not feel pressure in having to make a decision. We spent a couple hours letting the girls play with Boomer, and right from the beginning we could tell it was the perfect match. Paws 4 You Rescue took the time to match the perfect dog for our family and didn't just try to push "any" dog on us. We told them about our family lifestyle...and they pointed us in the right direction.
Boomer spends a lot of time playing with Giulia and Olivia at the dog park and the beach, and he loves going with John a couple nights a week for a run. He is on his 4th week of school and he's so smart that he got to skip right over Puppy Kindergarten and move up to the next class. He is the perfect mix of playful puppy and calm, well mannered dog. Thank you Paws 4 You Rescue!
Sincerely, Marie
