October Happenings
Wow, time is flying by this year!  Thank you for receiving and reading our monthly newsletters. We count on the community to keep saving dogs from euthanasia at the local pound, so keeping you informed on Paws 4 You 'Happenings' is very important.

You can't think "October" without thinking "Halloween"!  And this year it is on a Saturday so the weekend will be full of fun activities - including one that Paws 4 You is having at CocoWalk during the afternoon hours on the 31st.  But please remember to be careful over the Halloween weekend while the ghosts and goblins are out and about.

Last month you read about Gail's friend Barkley. Requests to meet him poured in and he found his perfect home after staying with us for a year! When we set out to save a dog at Miami-Dade Animal Services just before they are put down, we do not put a time line on when that particular dog should find a home. We commit to each one until a forever family is united with the dog that touched their heart.

me and Gary      Gary

When a volunteer fosters a dog, personalities shine through and results in the perfect forever family match. I am fostering Gary, the beagle. He is the best foster I have had over the past three years. (Sorry Buddy, Frosty, Stitch, Lydia, Red, Faye, Star, Alice, Daisy, Lucas and all the others!) Gary waits patiently for his food, his leash, his treats and to jump on the bed at night. He is lucky enough to accompany me and another dog to my office every day.  He keeps to himself and sleeps all day then asks politely for a mid-afternoon walk as part of our routine.  I have never experienced being around such a laid back dog. Yes, maybe it is because he is around five years old and at a mature stage in his life but it is much more than just that - his personality is very unique and accommodating.

He is truly the perfect companion dog for a single person with or without another dog who just likes to hang out all day. Or an older couple who just wants someone around for company. I wonder about his background because he is quiet, well mannered, obedient and observant. He loves to go for walks and smell all the scents in town and he enjoys being around my male dog and two female dogs.  Doesn't mind the office cat either!

Gary is a sweet beagle and deserves a great home and the perfect family. I would love to discuss him with any one who wants a true friend in their life.

Safety Tips
for your dog on Halloween
Candy as a BeeHanding out goodies to cute trick-or-treaters on Halloween makes for an entertaining evening, but your dog may become frightened as group after group of strangely dressed children and accompanying adults invade their space.  The holiday can be a scary and dangerous time for your pet.

By following some simple tips you can keep your pet safe and comfortable without infringing on the family fun.

Candy, the bumble bee is up for adoption. Click on her picture to learn more about this cute little beagle.

- Keep your pet in a quiet place, away from trick-or-treaters and other Halloween activities.  All but the most social dogs and cats should be kept in a separate room during peak trick-or-treat visiting hours. Too many strangers can be scary and stressful for pets. When opening the door for trick-or-treaters, take care that your pet doesn't dart outside. Always make sure your pet has proper identification of a collar with tags and/or a microchip. If a pet is frightened by sudden noises, keep a television or radio on for the pet throughout the evening on Halloween to drown out the sounds of firecrackers and other loud pranks that can upset a dog with a sound-related phobia.

 - Keep pets restrained and away from open flames used in Halloween candles or Jack-o-Lanterns. Use caution so that pets don't knock over a candlelit pumpkin or get burned. A less dangerous alternative for candles involves using a special battery-powered Jack-o-Lantern light or an electric candle, complete with a special effects light bulb that appears to flicker like a candle.

 - Keep decorations that out of reach. Pumpkins and decorative corn can produce gastrointestinal upset or intestinal blockage if ingested. Keep wires and cords from electric lights and other decorations out of reach.

 - Keep candy away from pets. Chocolate is toxic to animals. Tin foil and cellophane candy wrappers can be hazardous if swallowed. Small objects can cause life threatening blockages in the intestines if eaten by your pet.

 - Supervise pets who will be wearing a Halloween costume.  Halloween costumes for pets can be bulky and restrictive which can make walking, running, jumping very difficult. Pets can also become entangled in clothing and costumes, resulting in falls and other injuries, so always supervise a costumed dog. Do not obstruct their vision. Obstructed vision might make them nervous.

- It's best to leave the dogs at home while trick-or-treating. Costumes may look strange to people, but just imagine what they look like to a dog or cat. Loud noises and strange costumes may frighten your pet into the road and cause accidents. Trick-or-treaters may also drop potentially toxic chocolate candy, which a dog may pick up and eat without an owner noticing.

OH! And don't forget about Spooky the Kitten:
(one of four up for adoption)

Spooky

I am Sam the Beagle
Sam the beagle
Dear friends, family and future acquaintances:

Let me introduce myself, I am Sam the Beagle, the adopted pet of Maria Elena and Ray.

I am a male Beagle of about four to five years of age.  I have beautiful long ears and nose, (a sign of virility, I've been told).  I was adopted on August 14, 2009 and began a new life at the home of my adopted parents.

At first I was little hesitant and apprehensive about my new digs; since after carefully casing and sniffing the house all around, I felt an eerie feeling that a previous canine brother  had inhabited the dwelling.... Sure enough, I later found out that his name was Bruno and that he died of  infirmities and old age. May his soul rest in canine Heaven.

Let me tell you a little bit about my life prior to adoption.  I was born into slavery in a breeding farm, somewhere in Florida.  I was poorly fed and lived in filthy conditions.

So life went on for many years until someone ratted out the owners of the slave farm.  TV News and reporters came running to report the injustices that we were subjected to.  We were featured in a TV program called Animal Planet.  That is how I got my fifteen minutes of fame.

After our rescue and removal to an adoption center in Miami, we were well fed, treated  and pampered by dog loving volunteers.  Soon after we were taken to the vet for physical examination, microchip implant and routine vaccinations.   Finally, I was paw printed, photographed and given a new name "Randy" and placed on the Internet where my adopted mother spotted me...and the rest is history.

I am now settled in my new home, with a loving and doting family who love me very much. They take me out for walks around the neighborhood where I, as an ecology friendly Beagle, water and fertilize the neighbors' lawn.

Oh, I almost forgot, it was my new family's idea to change my name to Sam, I like it better than "Randy".   And by the way, they say that dog owners resemble their pets; my master has long ears as well as a big nose. What ya' know.

Until next time.

Yours truly,

Sam the Beagle

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals estimates between 500,000 and 1 million pets are at risk of becoming homeless, as the economic crisis hits more households across the country,. This has put extra burden on animal shelters and rescue groups. There has never been a better time to support your local animal rescue group whether that means a financial or goods donation.

There are unique ways to contribute to Paws 4 You Rescue including donating your old car for auction or even your old towels to use for bathing the dogs before the adoption events.  Giving up time during the week or weekend by volunteering is a great way to assist our dedicated group.  Helping to organize fundraisers or hosting an event is a fun way to support all the dogs rescued from euthanasia that are a part of the Rescue.

A small way to make a big difference is to sign up for the exclusive Paws 4 You Rescue credit card. All the dogs featured on the Visa cards were rescued from euthanasia at the local pound and represent the hundreds of dogs Paws 4 You saves every year. CardPartner affinity credit cards are issued by UMB, one of the largest independent banks in the US, which Smart Money recently ranged as "...the highest scoring traditional bank among our favorites."

Paws 4 You Rescue and CardPartner, Inc. (www.cardpartner.com) have joined forces to launch the Paws 4 You Rescue Visa affinity PlatinumŽ Rewards credit card.  When a cardholder activates the card, our rescue group will receive $50. Then once a month for the life of the program, Paws 4 You Rescue receives a check for a portion of every dollar that every cardholder charges.

So using the P4Y credit card for everyday purchases is an easy way to help us make a difference. All the benefits of a PlatinumŽ Visa Rewards Card will be yours (no annual fee, 0% interest for the first six month introductory period on purchases and balance transfers and bonus rewards points), along with the satisfaction of showing your support of Paws 4 You Rescue's mission every time you use your card.

Boy, the black lab mix and Blue, the brindle lab mix both still need homes! Check out the Adopt Me page of our website for more details on each of these young boys.
