 Dear Friends,
On behalf of every one at the Rescue, we hope you had a relaxing long Labor Day weekend with your family and friends - even the four-legged ones!
I have been volunteering with Paws 4 You Rescue since the very beginning. The volunteers get to know the dogs on a personal level learning that each dog is an individual and has a match out there. I would like to tell you about Barkley.
He tugs at my heart strings every time I see him. I can't figure out why he hasn't found a loving home yet. He's about two years old, sweet and smart, and a shade of yellow that makes me smile (with beautiful brown eyes). I wish so many things for him. I wish he could have a family and know what love is...I wish he could experience the beach and learn to fetch and bring back a ball...I wish he could learn that his new family won't abandon him. I think he would like a chance at all these things and more. Barkley has been with us and up for adoption at Paws 4 You Rescue for a while now. Barkley was rescued from the local "pound", which is Miami-Dade Animal Services, located just off the Palmetto at NW 74th Street. It is a scary place to be if you're a dog or a cat. They euthanize animals there. As many as 150 of them every day. I personally think dogs (and cats) figure this out very quickly. It is not a place to arrive if you are sick or injured. They don't "fix" animals there. They keep them for a few days and if no one claims or adopts them, they are put to sleep. Miami-Dade Animal Services is not a rescue and it is not the Humane Society. It is run by the County, paid by our tax dollars because there are just too many loose or abandoned animals. They have been neglected, abused, not spayed or neutered, or are lost or "dumped" because their owners did not take responsibility for their welfare. Animal Services will help spay or neuter and so will the Humane Society, but that is another story for another day.

Getting back to my friend Barkley. For some reason no one has ever fostered him and shown him the way a dog could and should live in a home. He doesn't know about warm voices and laughter, delicious smells coming from the kitchen, a happy place full of love with hugs and toys, and a bed all his own. I've sat with Barkley and wondered why. Where did he come from? I wish I knew his story. All I know is Barkley is kind and his eyes are full of hope. I know he would make a loyal companion. So if you don't have a loyal companion or you can make room for one more, why don't you take Barkley home and show him what real family living is. Of course he is safe with us at Paws 4 You Rescue, but our goal is to find each rescue a forever home. Each time we do that, we can rescue one more dog from the euthanasia list and find that new friend a home. I think these rescued dogs know that their lives were saved and believe they show their gratitude for the rest of their lives to their adopters. People who adopt a rescue are remarkable with their love, patience and understanding and are forever special in the hearts of their new companions.
Sincerely,
Barkley's friend, Gail gail@paws4you.org

Citizens for Pets in Condos
 Moving and "Landlord won't
allow" are among the top reasons given by pet owners when relinquishing
their dogs or cats to animal shelters. People are absolutely
heartbroken to have to give up their pets in order to find affordable
housing. Almost 65% of all US households have at least one cat or
dog. When an individual retires, the choice to give up their animal to
move into a condo or an apartment is an unfortunate necessity because
of the strict rules of many associations. Older people can be lonely,
anxious, depressed and could greatly benefit from having a furry
friend. But alas, it is not only retirees who are affected; many
people are forced to downsize and find housing alternatives in this
economic climate. A big issue in South Florida is condo or association
boards which do not allow animals. People who own their homes or units in
association-run housing are prohibited by no-pet deed restrictions from
keeping the family dog or cat. Obviously, the best situation for cats
and dogs is being able to live with their loving guardian, rather than
be turned into the pound where euthanasia rates are at an all time high.
Citizens
for Pets in Condos, petsincondos.org, was originally started to
help people who moved into common interest ownership communities
(condos, home owner associations, co-ops and trailer parks) and were
forced to get up their beloved pets. Without any funding or initial
support they have managed to collect (to date) over 23,000 signatures
on their petition to allow pets in condos. Having a simple majority to
reverse no-pet deed restrictions was suggested by one legislator, Julio
Robaina. But that was not strong enough. Several attempts were made,
instead, to get a law to clarify the right to have emotional support
animals, to codify HUD rulings on this issue. (See
www.petsincondos.org/legal.htm#ESA.) Activists in California started
with an ESA bill before getting a law that says that if you live in
association-run housing you may have at least one companion animal.
No-pet deed restrictions can mean death to healthy, adoptable animals.
Maida
W. Genser, founder of Citizens for Pets in Condos, says, "We are
working to increase acceptance of companion animals by educating the
public about the health benefits of having animal companions and by
stressing responsible pet ownership/guardianship. Our motto is:
creating a win-win situation for both people and pets." Visit petsincondos.org to find a link to the online petition, plus
printable paper petitions, flyers and other materials for spreading the
word. There is a wealth of information on the health benefits of
companion animals, legal information, stories, letters and more on the
web page. Condo reform experts state that in order to get legislation
in Florida, which has such a major no-pets-allowed issue, at least
50,000 signatures are needed.
Please review and sign the
petition today as well as spread the word, even if it doesn't directly
affect you. And remember, it is also very important to encourage those
who want a pet and can afford to take care of their four-legged friend,
to adopt a rescued animal once permission is granted from their place
of residence.

That's a Spicy Trash Can!
|
Does your dog raid wastebaskets while you're away, leaving a toppled basket and messy trail of wrappers and sticky drippings?
Consider this prevention technique: Place an open pack of Chinese hot mustard in the bottom of the empty wastebasket or on top of it before heading out of the house.
As soon as your dog sticks her head inside, she'll recoil from the sharp odor! Be consistent. Try to remember to do it every day for two weeks so your dog gets the message and loses interest.

Fold-Up Chairs Needed for Adoption Events
|
Home Depot has gray and white fold-up chairs for $20 each and P4Y
could use as many as possible. The more volunteers we have, the more
dogs we can bring to show the public. The Rescue would like all the
volunteers to be comfortable as hours are spent with our great adoptable
dogs. We not only have weekly functions at Petco and PetSmart but many
special events as well.
So if you are looking for a unique
way to contribute to Paws 4 You Rescue, purchasing a folding chair for the
organization is just the way!
Bring your donation to the PetSmart across from The Falls on US1 &
SW 136 Street any time on a Sunday from 11am until 4pm and we will
gladly accept them!
Thank you in advance.
