Summer has officially arrived here in South Florida! And so has Hurricane Season. Look next month for a Pet Preparedness article to help you and your family get ready for Hurricane Season.
Last month we sent out a note about needing crates, towels and blankets. Well, one hard-working volunteer knitted quite a few for our shelter dogs and rounded in some friends to help!
Jeannie owns two yarn stores in South Florida - Elegant Stitches and Tropical Yarns. She decided the easiest way to make sure our dogs have a comfortable place to sleep is to do what she knows best...CROCHET! And some of her Elegant Stitches' customers joined in on the fun!
The crocheted, machine washable blankets are made holding 4 worsted weight yarns together with a Q hook - so they are soft and cushy for the doggie tushies! The suggested pattern is chain 25 or 30, and make row after row of half-double crochet until it is the size you want (we need all sizes). Have fun and mix the colors!
Jeannie is pictured below with Bonnie, who just made Terri (one of our adoptable puppies being fostered by Jeannie) a beautiful blue and red blanket to call her own! BEAUTIFUL work!
If any of our readers would like more information on how to create a blanket out of yarn for one of our dogs, please visit Elegant Stitches at 8841 SW 132 Street in Miami, email Jeannie at jeannie@tropicalyarns.com or click on the picture below to be directed to her website.
Jeannie works out of the Miami location on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. Elegant Stitches is the largest yarn store in the SE United States!
Another shout out goes out to Mary who is seeing to it that all the puppies that are adopted at PetSmart on Sundays receives a blanket! The pups love the softness and the new parents appreciate having something for their new family member. Check out Freddy, an American Bulldog mix that is available for adoption. He decided to pile a few of them for his younger friends to sit on! What a sweetheart. Click on his image to be linked to his profile on petfinder.com. We always have puppies for adoption so please be sure to check out our Adoption Page regularly! Thank you Jeannie, Bonnie, Elegant Stitches and Mary!! And THANK YOU readers for subscribing and reading the Paws 4 You Rescue monthly
newsletters. We are going on our first year of sending these out and
have received a very positive response!

Moving? Don't Forget the Dog! by Misty Buck
The flux of the economy has had an incredible impact on the world of pet owners. From budget concerns to significant lifestyle changes, we are forced to adapt to not only our needs, but to the needs of those who depend on us, including our dogs. One such reality of this change is the decision to move. Moving is hectic by nature and our animals deal with similar stresses in adapting to a new environment. Nonetheless, there are tactics you can use to ease this transition for you and your dog.
One of the best pieces of advice I can offer to anyone moving with a dog is to make arrangements for the dog to stay somewhere such as at a boarding facility or friend's home on the day of the move. This will give you peace of mind knowing that your dog is not going to get lost in the chaos and will help your dog stay calm and comfortable.
Another important tip is to remember to get a new ID tag for you dog before you move. This way if something happens and the dog ends up loose in an unfamiliar area, he or she can be returned to you easily because you have the correct contact information.
You can also help the dog's transition into the new home through keeping in mind that they are also adjusting to an unfamiliar place. In times of change it is important for a dog to maintain a routine as this will given them a sense of normalcy. I would also strongly suggest getting them accustomed to the new home room by room and making sure that they still have a place they can go that is their own, whether it is a crate or an area marked off with their bed and toys.
Furthermore, use caution if you have a yard at your new home. Spend some time with them in the yard before you let them stay out alone. This will allow you to monitor their activities because as all dog owners know, the dog is bound to find things you never saw, such as holes in a fence or other dangerous items.
If your new home is subject to a homeowners association, be sure you know its pet regulations ahead of time. There are often strict rules including boundaries for where you are allowed to walk your dog.
Moving to a new city? Remember to check up on local ordinances, as well as find the nearest vet and animal hospitals prior to your move. Chances are you will also have to register your dog in the new city.
Bottom line is that while moving can be stressful and chaotic, pet owners should make a special list of to-do items just for their animal companions. It will greatly help the transition for everyone and assist you with keeping your dog's behavior at its very best.

Pet Health Insurance Round Up by Sarah Wehking (pictured with her foster dog Bailey)
As a dog owner it's inevitable that you will have to pay vet bills. You may have noticed that things add up pretty quickly. If you're concerned about the cost of taking care of your pet's medical expenses, perhaps it's time to look into pet insurance. It's in your best interest (and your pet's) to consider this option. There are a wide variety of plans for your dog, including different levels of coverage, different deductibles, premiums, and co-insurance.
The way it works: · You take your dog to the vet · You pay the entire bill · You fill out a claim form and send or fax to the insurance company · You are reimbursed according to your plan (approx. 2 weeks)
To decide what will work best for you and your dog, you should look at different companies and compare prices and coverage. Most companies will not cover pre-existing conditions. These are conditions that your dog already suffers from before the effective date on the policy you purchase. This includes any illness that occurs in the waiting period after you buy your plan, but before your policy becomes effective. If your pet develops a condition after your policy effective date and both you and your vet were NOT aware of it, then it is not a pre existing condition.
If you have recently adopted a dog, I have good news for you! While it is unfortunate that you may not have had more years with your pet from the beginning, it means that you haven't had years to discover health problems. If nothing else, you are at an advantage when it comes to pet insurance. If you have just adopted a 5 year old dog and to the best of your knowledge (and your vets) it has no health concerns, your dog will be enrolled without pre existing conditions.
If you're wondering what company you should insure your pet with, that all depends on what you're looking for. There are many choices; Petco recommends TruPanion, Humane Society recommends Pet Plan Insurance, and the Pet Chamber of Commerce recommends Veterinary Pet Insurance (VPI), and many more are out there!
If you look at Pet Plan, depending on the plan you choose, you can elect coverage for more than just medical costs. You can allow for the costs of advertisement and a reward offer if your pet goes missing, boarding fees if you are ever hospitalized, compensation if you lose your pet through straying, illness, or injury, and travel expenses if your vacation was cancelled due to a lost or ill pet. Pet Plan offers a 10% discount off premiums for micro chipped pets.
Their website lists the more traditional kind of coverage they can provide: ➢ Hospitalization-including emergency treatment ➢ Diagnostic testing (MRIs, X-rays, Endoscopy) ➢ Surgery-including cruciate ligament surgery and organ transplants but not spay/neuter ➢ Cancer treatment-regardless of the type of cancer ➢ Non routine dental treatment-such as a root canal, but not routine teeth cleaning ➢ Prescription medications ➢ Referral and specialist treatment ➢ Alternative and complementary treatments-acupuncture, hydrotherapy, or chiropractic treatment
Many companies have a pre determined deductible and co insurance. Some companies allow you to customize your plan more than others. With Pet Plan you will first need to select your co-insurance (0%, 10%, or 20%). If you choose a 20% coinsurance, you will be reimbursed 80% of your claim. The lower your coinsurance rate, the higher your monthly premiums. Next, you will have to decide on your deductible amount ($50, $100, or $200). The lower your deductible, the higher your monthly premiums. It is important that you refer to your company's exclusion list as they have a breakdown on what conditions will be covered. Monthly premiums are going to range depending on several things (breed, age, health, desired coverage). A quote from VPI for "Superior" coverage on a 6 year old, 90 pound boxer mix with no pre existing conditions was $31.84 a month. With VPI's superior plan you would be reimbursed 90% and have a $50 deductible per incident as well as a $14,000 annual limit on coverage. You can expect to get reimbursed in approximately two weeks with most. You can elect a more basic coverage, for example, ASPCA insurance offers basic accident coverage starting at $9.50 a month.
Volunteer, Jen Ford, insures her pet with VPI and says that, "as much money as I put in monthly for my dog since she was under a year old (and now almost 10), I have gotten in return from all my claims. So as she ages and/or if something drastic happens, the policy will be well worth it because there will be no money lost on my end."
Things to keep in mind: · Certain breeds have surcharges or caveats. · Your pet may not qualify after a certain age. · If you pay the whole premium up front, rather than paying monthly, you may receive a small discount. · If you are a member of the Pet Chamber of Commerce, you can receive 10% off your plan with VPI. · Ask if you can see any vet in the USA or if you are limited. · Ask if your coinsurance is higher when you see a specialist or use an emergency clinic. · Carefully review their exclusion list and ask lots of questions!
