carol & dee Have no fear, there are certified dog trainers near!

Some of us are lucky enough to bring home that perfect puppy -- that flawless fido. Then, there's the majority of us who lovingly look at our dogs and say "you'd be perfect only if (fill in least favorite behavior here)."

With hundreds of resources at the bookstore and thousands of websites online with training tips, how do you know what information to trust? Reality is, you don't. But there's good news dog owners! It's called the APDT.

The Association of Pet Dog Trainers (APDT) is a professional organization of individual dog trainers who are committed to becoming better trainers through education.  Founded by noted veterinarian, behaviorist, and author Dr. Ian Dunbar, the APDT is the largest dog trainer association in the world. Trainers who are members stand for promoting caring relationships between dogs and people by emphasizing positive reward-based training. In order to develop a credible barometer for the dog-owning public to choose a trainer, the APDT initiated a process to develop a standardized dog trainer examination. In conjunction with a task force of approximately 20 nationally known dog-training professionals and behaviorists, the APDT developed the Certification Council of Pet Dog Trainers (CCPDT). This task force worked for three years to research and develop a comprehensive examination in conjunction with an independent testing company. The task force followed rigorous standards to ensure that the process met professional testing criteria. A critical part of this process was the establishment of the separate and independent CCPDT to manage the accreditation and recertification of the pet dog trainers. The CCPDT also pursues development of future higher-level training examinations.

The CCPDT's program (ccpdt.org) is the first national certification for dog trainers. The CCPDT administered its first examination September 28, 2001, during the APDT Annual Educational Conference in Ellenville, NY. Since then, the CCPDT administers the test twice a year in various cities throughout the US and other countries. The Professional Testing Corporation of New York ensures that the test sites are professionally secured and monitored. Candidates who pass the exam earn the title Certified Pet Dog Trainer and may use the designation, "CPDT," after their names. All certified trainers must earn continuing education units to maintain their designations.

We're proud to announce that one of our Paws 4 You volunteers, Denisa "Dee" C. Hoult, has earned the CPDT title. Dee now joins 1500 plus Certified Pet Dog Trainers in the United States, Canada, Austria, Ireland, Singapore, Japan, Australia and the Bahamas. Dee is the owner of Applause Your Paws, Inc., a dog training company in Miami that focuses on education for dog owners.  With an emphasis on building a stronger relationship between human and canine, Applause Your Paws' training techniques focus on teaching dog owners how to better communicate with their dogs as to build trust and mutual respect. Through positive reinforcement training, Applause Your Paws, Inc. specializes in modifying many common behavioral issues including aggression and excitability.

Dee has been involved in our local animal community for eight years through her involvement with multiple animal organizations including ours. As one of our volunteers she frequently offers her expertise to those who adopt a rescued dog to ensure a smooth transition into their new relationship. Dee can always be found at our fundraising events promoting our rescue and encouraging dog owners to find a responsible and qualified trainer for their specific needs. Congratulations Dee! We are so proud to have you as one of our loyal volunteers and the dogs thank you for your commitment to their emotional and physical well-being!

Carol at Luncheon Congratulations!
2009 People, Pets and Vets Award Luncheon

Yesterday, Carol Caridad was acknowledged for her continuous efforts in the world of dog rescue by receiving the Volunteer Hero Award from her peers.  The South Florida Veterinary Foundation presented this Volunteer Hero Award to Carol Caridad whose extraordinary acts of kindness enhance the lives of animals in our community.

Each year veterinarians from the South Florida Veterinary Foundation (SFVF) celebrate the outstanding contribution of individuals and corporations who increase awareness and quality services for animal related issues during its annual awards luncheon. These awards acknowledge individuals and animals that promote the importance of the human-animal bond and its benefits to mankind.

Jennifer Ford, pictured below with Dr. Oliveira of South Miami Animal Clinic, and Carol Caridad, was presented the Media Award for her outstanding contributions in the media industry that continuously promote awareness of animal-related issues in our community, promote responsible pet ownership and the humane treatment of animals.  Being at Partner at Blue Daisy Media (bluedaisymedia.com) has allowed her to leverage media space and air time for not only Paws 4 You Rescue but Miami-Dade Animal Services and other non-profit animal groups in South Florida.

Congratulations to both of you and for all of the Paws 4 You Rescue volunteers who work hard EVERY day saving dogs from euthanasia as a team!

Special Note: A volunteer's dog, whom some of you might recognize because he was once a Paws 4 You Rescue dog and graces some of our collateral material, was nominated for the outstanding Companion Animal Award.  Way to go Sinatra! (Owner is Jason Grossman)

Congratulations to all the recipients and nominees - all well deserving of recognition!  And a BIG thank you to the SFVF for promoting veterinary medicine and responsible pet care in our community.

Special Beagle
at Paws 4 You

And they say cats have NINE lives?!

Banks has about FOUR so far....

Banks is a 1-2 year old lemon and white male beagle BADLY injured and then picked up by the County.  With a lame back leg, Animal Services did not think he would be adopted or rescued but our reputation proceeds us with all the BEAGLE MANIA MADNESS AROUND HERE...he was saved and then immediately operated on by Dr. Juan Sardinas at Miami Veterinary Specialists (who happens to be the President of SFVF - see story above).  His pelvis was broken in several places and his leg was literally crushed. Banks' leg was saved and pinned together.

We are in need of a quiet foster home for Banks during his recovery time.  Please go to our Foster Page for more info on how you can become a foster family.

P4Y is looking for sponsors for his medical procedure as well.  Donations can be sent to our PO Box and earmarked Banks.

He is currently walking, smiling and feeling better every day!  Banks will recover from this traumatic event and looking forward to finally settling down with a family to call his own. A true success story!

Weekdays and Weekends

Volunteers are the heart of Paws 4 You Rescue as everyone who serves in the organization is a volunteer. We are professionals from many walks of life, graduate and college students, and high school and middle school students. Volunteers have their choice of various activities in which to participate - being part of the adoption team at Petsmart on Sundays, getting bubbly with the dogs at bath time on Saturdays, fostering puppies and dogs during the week, participating in special events, and sponsoring or participating in fundraising activities.

Volunteering with an animal rescue organization is a gratifying experience that is difficult to match! It warms our hearts to see homeless and neglected pets become beloved members of families. We know that the dogs appreciate their new homes, and letters, e-mails, visits, and phone calls from adoptive families are constant reminders of the good will spread by pet rescue groups such as Paws 4 You Rescue.

So you might want to volunteer? We would love to have you join us any day or any way you can!

Please fill out one of the forms on our Volunteer Page on our site (paws4you.org) and bring it to Chris any Sunday at PetSmart between the hours of 11am and 2pm.

If you have any questions regarding becoming a volunteer, please contact chris@paws4you.org.

Paws 4 You Rescue is an organization that exists based on the gifts and contributions from the local community.  Our funding is purely based on those of us who love dogs, know what dogs do for their owners, and have a sense of compassion for the mass numbers of animals euthanized each year in Miami-Dade county and surrounding areas.

We are currently in the need of wire crates, towels and blankets. Check out our Donate Page on our website (paws4you.org) for more information and a link to our Amazon Wish List.

Give Back America, Sponsor a Dog, Become an Angel

The money donated to Paws 4 You Rescue is used for the salvation of animals from the harsh and unforgiving environment at Animal Services.  Each dog is taken to a veterinarian for spay/neuter, vaccines, worm treatment and kennel cough treatment (when applicable). If they are in need of surgical procedures it is provided to them as well.  In addition to these initial costs of rescuing, there is the cost incurred to feed and board each animal until a forever home is found. When the dogs exit Animal Services, they enter the Paws 4 You Rescue family, treating them as our own, until they are matched with loving people who will continue the effort that we have started.

As you can imagine, there are many ways to donate and to HELP US SAVE A LIFE!

Check out our Donate Page for more information on how to become an Angel or go Shopping and have a percentage automatically go to the Rescue.

Visit the Adopt Page and click on a dog that catches your eye and through petfinder.com, you can sponsor that particular dog and the monies will be set aside for him or her!

Why adopt?

If you have room in your heart and home for a new dog, adopting a rescue dog makes sense for a lot of reasons. First of all, you will be giving that dog a second chance at life and happiness.

Every week, hundreds of wonderful dogs are euthanized Miami-Dade County alone, simply because there are not enough homes for all of them.

By adopting a rescue dog rather than buying a dog from a pet shop or breeder, you help reduce the demand that drives the commercial breeding of dogs. While choosing a rescue dog over a purchased one will not solve the pet overpopulation problem, it does give many of them a chance they otherwise would not have.

If you adopt a young adult or older dog, you can avoid many of the domestic hassles related to house-training and teething. Puppies are cute, but they do require lots of attention, training and patience (and newspapers, of course)! An older dog might also fit in better with your current dog than a rambunctious puppy. But if it is a puppy your heart desires, the Rescue always has young ones available!

There are plenty of great reasons to adopt, but the best reason of all is by rescuing a dog (or a puppy), you will receive unconditional love from a devoted best friend for life!

Current dogs and puppies that are up for adoption are listed here and please go to our Application Page to fill out an pre-adoption application.  Any questions can be directed to applications@paws4you.org.

About Us

Paws 4 You Rescue, Inc. is a non-profit, all volunteer 501(c)3 animal rescue organization based in Miami, Florida.  Our top priority is to save animals from euthanasia at Miami Dade Animal Services.  On average 100 to 150 animals are euthanized every day at this county shelter!

Rescued animals vary from being sick, injured, homeless and surrendered to simply lost.  We give these animals a safe environment, professional medical care, hope and lots of love.  Our animals are spayed/neutered, vaccinated and ID micro-chipped.  Some require major surgery from a specialist to repair broken limbs while others may need additional rehabilitation time and specific medical care - ranging from bordetella (kennel cough) and skin infections to cherry eye and heartworm treatments.  All benefit physically and emotionally from a new loving family to call his or her own.

Once Paws 4 You Rescue commits to helping an animal, we seek the best quality treatment available - taking no shortcuts.  Our dogs stay at veterinary clinics, boarding facilities and foster homes until they are ready for adoption.  We spend time taking our new friends to different events across South Florida to find suitable homes.  Our team is compassionate and passionate in reaching these goals.  We are a group of professional people with various backgrounds, who together have decided to commit to saving as many of these animals as possible.

Additionally, we believe in the value of education pertaining to the importance of spaying and neutering to relieve the strain on Animals Services and our community.  The huge overpopulation problem in this County can be controlled!

Please support us.  We depend on your expertise, time, temporary foster homes and donations to reach our goal of saving these animals.
