Paws 4 You Rescue
Wishing you the best this Holiday Season!

The Holiday Season is a time for gift giving, traveling and visiting with family. Some can take their dogs, and some can not.  Dog sitting services as well as boarding at your local vet are both great options that your dog will enjoy.  But what do you do if your pet exhibits anxiety just when you leave for work, let alone for a few days?!  We visit that issue as well as re-visiting the topic of giving the gift of companionship.  Far too often, giving a cat or a dog as a gift can back fire and the animal is left to deal with the unexpected.

Thank you to all our Putt 4 Paws' sponsors, players, donors and volunteers!  We out-did ourselves this year . . . more fun and more funds!  The entire Rescue appreciates everyone's support!

This November and December, our Rescue will be raising money for one of our special cases - Happy.  He was found by a kind stranger who soon became a friend.  A small pointer mix and under one year old, Happy had a lame front leg.  With the help of a specialist, we were able to mend his leg and he is recuperating nicely!  All our fundraising efforts this Season will be for this little guy and a female beagle found with a broken hip (that was repaired the same day as Happy). If you are in search of a unique gift to give, perhaps a donation towards Happy's or Mercy's care in the name of a friend or family member is an idea to consider!  For more information on either of these lucky dogs, please email jen@paws4you.org.

The Rescue would also like to take this opportunity to thank Walmart for inviting our adoptable dogs to their unveiling of pet costumes for the 2009 Halloween Season!  Our rescued pups strutted the "Dog-Walk" for a Halloween Pet Fashion Show raising awareness about pet adoption on October 25th at the Walmart Supercenter in North Miami Beach. After the show, Walmart sent Paws 4 You Rescue on a donated $2,500 shopping spree in which we got to pick out much needed supplies like crates, nylabones and towels for our dogs!!

When Leaving Your Dog Alone is RUFF:
Tips for Dealing with Separation Anxiety
Dr. OliveiraIf leaving your dog alone turns your precious pet into a wild animal, you're not alone.  Chances are he or she has separation anxiety.

As social animals, dogs naturally have the need to interact with others and belong to a pack.  The need for companionship can become a problem when a dog experiences the tremendous stress caused by isolation. This state of fear, which often gives way to behavioral issues, is called separation anxiety.  Many owners become disheartened by their pet's misbehavior, but worry not, separation anxiety is often curable and sometimes even preventable. Many studies and several experts say that even though the exact trigger of the disorder is unknown, experts pinpoint several situations that often lead to its development.

While all dogs are susceptible to separation anxiety, often times these cases stem from rescued dogs who become fearful of isolation after multiple changes in environment. In essence, some rescued animals become fearful of being left again by their pack. Another frequent source of the disorder is when owners give their dogs (rescued or not) too much attention.  Yes, that's right too much attention. From taking him or her to run errands with you to allowing them to sleep in your bed, some dogs become so dependent on their owner's company that they literally do not know how to cope with being alone.  Separation anxiety can also be caused by a change of environment, including a move to a new house.

While experts are unsure of why some dogs develop separation anxiety others do not, they do agree that the disorder can be identified by a change in behavioral patterns.  Common signs of separation anxiety include: chewing on furniture, a house-broken dog relieving him or herself in the house, excessive barking, scratching at walls or doors, pacing, and other destructive behaviors.  All of which, of course, occur when you leave your pet at home alone.

However, just because your dog acts up when you leave, it does not mean that they have developed the disorder.  In fact, Dr. Maria Oliveira, owner and veterinarian at South Miami Animal Clinic (6100 South Dixie Highway), strongly suggests that owners have their pet examined to determine if they have separation anxiety. "Some dogs will bark and cry for just a little when you leave and will do the same when they hear you returning.  This is normal. Just like some kids do when they are left a daycare and you think they have cried the whole day!"

For dogs who do have the disorder, what many of their owners fail to understand is that their dog's misbehavior is not caused by their anger at them.  They are acting up out of fear.  Helping your dog overcome separation anxiety will take time and patience, but nonetheless it is an achievable goal.  There are several ways to help your pet acclimate to seclusion. Try giving them special toys reserved only for when the dog is left alone. Some like interactive toys that will keep them busier longer.  Others find that teaching your dog that you will always come back home helps to ease their anxiety.  For instance, leave your dog in a room or crate alone for a few minutes and then come back to show them that you will always return.  Crate training your dog works well in helping them adapt to an environment that will always be safe for them.  In extreme cases, visit a veterinarian who may also be able to help by prescribing medication to help ease your dog's nerves.

The most important point to remember is to not give up and instead think about how you are ultimately helping your dog lead a more comfortable and serene life.  "Some people see training by an expert as expensive, but in the end, it is a lot cheaper than having them go through all the stress and anxiety, let alone destroy your furniture," adds Dr. Oliveira.

Giving the gift of animal companionship
We've all seen this scene played out on TV before: a child is eagerly waiting to open his or her birthday present when the parent brings in a box with holes on the side and a big bow. When the child opens the box, there is an adorable puppy jumping out to lick his new best friend's face.  What the camera doesn't show us, is the responsibility that comes with the gift of a new pet.

While pets can certainly make a wonderful present, they are also one of the top reasons animals are surrendered to shelters.  To avoid getting a headache from something that is supposed to bring joy, the gift-giver should evaluate if the person is really prepared to become responsible for a new pet. Even then, try to match the personality and lifestyle needs of the animal to its new owner.  Talking to an expert, like one of our Paws 4 You Rescue volunteers, can help you make a better decision about which pet is right for your gift recipient.

If you're still not sure which pet is the right one, a great alternative is to give the person an IOU or a pet adoption voucher. The certificate acts as a voucher allowing the gift-giver to present a certificate stating that they are promising the recipient the chance to adopt a pet.  Once the gift-recipient is ready, the gift-giver can bring the new pet-parent-to-be to their local shelter or adoption event where they can pick out the perfect pet together.  This option allows the gift-receiver to have the freedom to adopt a pet that best suits their lifestyle and personality, while also ensuring peace-of-mind for the gift-giver.

The financial commitment of owning a pet is significant and should also be considered by the gift-giver.  The PET PROMISE CERTIFICATE is also beneficial in this respect because it allows the gift giver to wrap some necessary pet-care items such as a bowl, collar, a leash, and a carrier into the gift.

Adopting a pet can be as challenging as it is rewarding.  Yes, puppies and dogs are adorable, but they are also a lot of work because after all, they are animals.  It is easy and fun to gift someone with a pet, but the novelty of getting a new animal will eventually wear off.  This is when we see animals surrendered to shelters, which, as a pet rescue organization, is ultimately what we try to avoid and why we suggest looking into programs such as the PET PROMISE CERTIFICATE.

Success at Second Annual Putt 4 Paws
Golf Tournament
Carol at Putt 2
On Monday, October 13,
Paws 4 You Rescue held its second annual Putt 4 Paws Golf Tournament. The event, which was hosted by Calusa Country Club, raised almost $20,000 for the pet rescue!

Approximately 25 teams competed in the four-man scramble tournament.  Players were greeted with a unique challenge at each of the 18 holes such as the tee ball drive at hole one where players were required to hit their tee shot using a baseball bat; the blind tee shot at hole 11 which required players to hit their tee shot blindfolded; and punt/pass/kick competition at hole 14, where teams hit their second shot from wherever the football landed. Prizes were awarded for lowest team score, second place, last place, closest to pin and longest drive.

"Our second annual Putt 4 Paws Golf Tournament was fantastic," says Carol Caridad, President of Paws 4 You pictured above with Pepper (a young Cattle Dog up for adoption).  "We are an all-volunteer organization and so we are extremely appreciative of everyone who came out to support us and all those who sponsored the event.  Their efforts give us the resources to save more lives."

"We were thrilled to host Putt 4 Paws for the second consecutive year," adds Shawn Crews, General Manager of the Calusa Country Club.  "This is a really unique tournament that is not only a lot of fun, but also supports a great cause."

Paws 4 You Rescue's
Mission Statement:

Paws 4 You Rescue, Inc. is a non-profit, all volunteer 501(c)3 animal rescue organization based in Miami, Florida.  Our top priority is to save animals from euthanasia at Miami Dade Animal Services.  On average 100 to 150 animals are euthanized every day at this county shelter!

Rescued animals vary from being sick, injured, homeless and surrendered to simply lost.  We give these animals a safe environment, professional medical care, hope and lots of love.  Our animals are spayed/neutered, vaccinated and ID micro-chipped.  Some require major surgery from a specialist to repair broken limbs while others may need additional rehabilitation time and specific medical care - ranging from bordetella (kennel cough) and skin infections to cherry eye and heartworm treatments.  All benefit physically and emotionally from a new loving family to call his or her own.

Once Paws 4 You Rescue commits to helping an animal, we seek the best quality treatment available - taking no shortcuts.  Our dogs stay at veterinary clinics, boarding facilities and foster homes until they are ready for adoption.  We spend time taking our new friends to different events across South Florida to find suitable homes.  Our team is compassionate and passionate in reaching these goals.  We are a group of professional people with various backgrounds, who together have decided to commit to saving as many of these animals as possible.

Additionally, we believe in the value of education pertaining to the importance of spaying and neutering to relieve the strain on Animals Services and our community.  The huge overpopulation problem in this County can be controlled!

Please support us.
We depend on your expertise, time, temporary foster homes and donations to reach our goal of saving these animals.

Juniors
from Gulliver Prep!
On October 31, a Halloween Charity event was hosted for Paws 4 You Rescue. A great night for all who attended -- it was a venture that came to fruition thanks to the hard work of a group of young girls who refer to themselves as "the sisterhood".

These girls, Bryanna Núñez, Jenny P., Lauren Adames, Katarina Rodriguez and Andrea Scola worked hard and gave what time they had, in addition to monetary funding for the event.

Although they did not reach their target amount of $1,000, a local business, A+ Mini Storage, donated the remaining amount to help the girls reach their goal!

In closing, the party was a success and hopefully one of many - not only from this group of young volunteers but others who can form min-fundraisers to benefit the dogs saved by Paws 4 You Rescue.
