Happy Birthday --- to us!

I am thrilled to be able to communicate to all of our supporters through our new monthly newsletter marking our first anniversary!

Each month, information on a particular subject close to our Rescue, highlights on current available dogs at our organization, success stories and pictures as well as upcoming events will be sent out to keep you informed.

In May, we are focusing on all the black dogs that are up for adoption across the US!  There are too many and there is no real reason why - they are all terrific!

In its first year alone, this all volunteer organization rescued over 150 dogs from euthanasia lists at local animal shelters and various situations including animals that were homeless, surrendered or found. Once rescued, the animals are given a safe environment, professional medical care, microchips and vaccinations.  All rescued animals are also spayed or neutered and stay at veterinary clinics, boarding facilities and foster homes until they are ready for adoption.

Over the past year more than 30 people volunteered their time
to Paws 4 You Rescue in various roles ranging from foster homes to assisting with weekly bath times to attending adoption events.

Our first year was an outstanding success!  We are very grateful for the support that we received from the South Florida community.  Everyone from the volunteers to the veterinarians to those who donated money, time or supplies were the reason we were able to save so many lives.

We look forward towards another fantastic year and hope you will stay in touch and help us towards our goal of saving even more dogs this year!

Black Dog Syndrome

Why are so many black dogs not adopted?

The general public is not aware of how doomed black dogs are when they are brought to an animal shelter.

If you haven't heard the phrase BLACK DOG SYNDROME, you are not alone.  But to animal shelters and pet rescues across the country, this is a common and a very real situation. BLACK DOG SYNDROME refers to the theory that black dogs are more likely to be passed over for adoption and therefore more likely to be euthanized at a horrifying rate.

Some of the reasons given by would-be adopters:

1.  It is more difficult to see and connect with a black dog in a poorly lit kennel.  Some walk right by without noticing them because the dark colored dogs cannot be seen behind the bars or wires of a cage.

2.  They do not photograph as well as lighter colored dogs because it is not easy to distinguish their features and their true expressions.  If they have any gray or white hairs on their face, they often appear older than their real age.

3.  Some believe black dogs will bring them bad luck or perceived as menacing!

4.  Some rescue people will say that by ratio there are more black dogs available in shelters because black is a dominant gene color thrown in the canine pool of genetics.

There is absolutely no scientific evidence to support the position that color has any bearing whatsoever on temperament, health, or overall quality of any dog, regardless of breed!

More information on BLACK DOG SYNDROME can be found on a website run by one woman's plight to educate people on this phenomenon - Contrary to the Ordinary: the Black Pearls of the Dog World, at www.blackpearldogs.com.

The next time you visit a shelter or rescue group pay special attention to the beautiful black dogs and cats waiting to be noticed. Give them a chance to find their way into your heart and home.

Check out three of our available beautiful black dogs:

Lily on the Green

Chandler is a black lab (mix) that loves to play and be around people.

He is three years old and looking for an active family to go running
or bicycling with on a daily basis.

Lily on the Green

Stuart is a black lab that is no more than two years old and just happy to be around every one and every dog he meets.  He even smiles and laughs when around kids!

This black lab mix is only 3-4 months old and happy as can be.  Gypsy loves to play and be a puppy!
