The importance of a Foster
|
Summer 2008
|
Being a dog owner and lover, rescue volunteer and foster parent, my life is full of four-legged friends-life could not be better!
If you're thinking about adopting but aren't sure if you're ready, why not try fostering a dog? Fostering an animal is the best kind of assistance dog rescue groups need. Providing a temporary home for a dog is a great way to feel out your own situation and make sure you are ready to bring a dog into your life. It also provides a valuable service to the rescue as kennel space can be very costly.
Fostering is rewarding for both the foster parent and the dog. Fosters assist the rescue in training the dogs and help them overcome any fears or stresses caused by their abandonment, abuse or previous situation. Fosters help these dogs "in transition" adapt to their new surroundings. They give a dog a chance to rebuild their self-esteem after being in such a disorienting situation. They also provide the organization with important information on temperament and behavior which can help them place the dog with the correct owner and their lifestyle.
If you think about it, fostering is a win-win situation! You get unconditional love and wet kisses just for providing a temporary home for a pup. Believe it or not . . . they know that you are giving them a second chance at finding their forever home and will love you for it.
If you do decide to foster, our dogs are up to date on vaccines, have a microchip and have been spayed or neutered. We will try our best to pair you up with a dog that fits your lifestyle. Trust me . . . you do not want to pass up the opportunity to provide an animal in need with love, exercise, food and shelter. They will be forever grateful.
Volunteering with Paws 4 You Rescue has opened my eyes to the reality that we can't save them all but take special interest in the ones we decide to save from euthanasia at Miami Dade Animal Services. But life can be more stressful for these pups than you think. Hence, we do our best to make all our rescues as comfortable as possible before finding his or her family. Being a volunteer has given me the drive to educate people about the importance of spaying and neutering, heartworm prevention and training and consistency. Dogs are not only pets, they are companions . . . friends. I urge you to become involved with our organization whether it be by fostering, volunteering at our adoption days or events, or, if you don't have the time, financially. Who else will speak up for these pups and find them new homes?
If you are interested in becoming a foster parent please visit our rescued friends on Sundays at PetSmart. We would ALL love to meet you! You may find a match on a permanent basis or be able to give him or her a home temporarily until we find the forever home each of them deserves.
Carol,
the President of Paws 4 You Rescue, will always have a foster dog at
her home. She is pictured here with Sport, a Chihuahua/Terrier mix
puppy that is awaiting his forever home. He assimilated into a home of
dogs and cats and now ready to melt a new family's heart.
In addition to our weekly adoption days, Paws 4 You has a number of events coming up. On September 20, we'll be at MartiniBar at The Shops at Sunset Place from 5 pm to 9 pm for our first Pawtini Pawty, an evening of drinks and entertainment amongst fellow dog-lovers. Tickets are $20 before the day of the event and $25 at the door. We also have a VIP Package for $200 for you and 3 of your friends. Please email us at events@paws4you.org for more information.
Our second annual Putt for Paws Golf Tournament is on October 13 at Calusa Country Club. So save the date and join us for a round of golf, meet our dogs or sign up for a chance at our raffle prizes!
All proceeds from our events will go to helping our furry friends get a second chance at a happier life.
We look forward to seeing you there!

Meet Molly and her Foster Family
Shepherd/Lab mix available for adoption
Molly has been with her foster family since they rescued her a month or two ago. She is a HAPPY, beautiful, active large breed 8-9 month old puppy who loves to play with toys, catch her frisbee and run around with other dogs in the grass.
Molly is very well behaved, loves being outdoors but also enjoys the airconditioning after a day at the dog park. She walks well on a leash and would be a great jogging partner. Best of all, she loves children and they all love her! Her sweetness shines through to everyone she meets.Being with a foster family in her formative months has allowed Molly to mature and learn the basics prior to moving in with her new forever family. Could your family be lucky enough to call Molly YOUR FOREVER FRIEND?Please email info@paws4you.org for more information from her foster family or to set up an appointment to meet sweet Molly.
Adopting Molly will bring fun and adventure into your life and home!

Meet Mimi and her Foster Family
American Bulldog/Boxer mix available for adoption
Mimi was rescued from the euthanasia list at Miami Dade Animal Services (where they destroy 100-150 animals per day!). Mimi caught our eye because of her beautiful markings and her calm nature. Mimi is a fantastic companion and very intelligent (under 4 years old). Mimi attracts attention where she goes and it is easy to see why.
Mimi is deaf but is learning commands quickly and eager to please.
Her foster family enjoys hanging out with her watching television and Mimi enjoys her trips to PetSmart on Sundays for the adoption events. She displays incredible patience and people are drawn to her gentle face. Kids want to hug this 85 pound mixed breed and Mimi smiles every time! Mimi will make a wonderful family pet and companion - she is great on the leash, very manageable and enjoys cuddling! She is sweet as can be and just loves to be around people, dogs and cats. Sara knows you will fall in love when your eyes meet Mimi's!Please email sara@paws4you.org for more information or to set up an appointment to meet Mimi. She has been staying with Sara and her family for a couple of months now and they have not only gotten to know her but enjoy her company and willingness to learn. Sara fosters for Paws 4 You Rescue and as soon as Mimi can find her the forever home she deserves, Sara can host another animal from the pound, saving yet another life.

Those who can't adopt, foster!
A look at how fostering animals can save lives
For most people, it is not a surprise that every year an astounding number dogs and cats are euthanized by animal control agencies. It may be a surprise, however, to know that one of the main reasons for the practice of euthanasia is simply because there is not enough room for homeless animals in overcrowded animal shelters. This sad reality is an unfortunate one for animals that are never given a chance at life.
Even at Paws 4 You Rescue, where our mission is to rescue as many animals as possible from the euthanasia lists at our local animal shelters, our resources are limited as our shelters aren't as big as our hearts. Still, the severity of lives lost can easily lessened if more people commit to helping animals through becoming a foster home. When someone commits to fostering a rescued animal they are committing to saving a life.
So just what is a foster home? A foster home serves as a temporary shelter for an animal that is up for adoption until the rescue organization, such as Paws 4 You Rescue, can permanently place the animal in another home. The foster home cares for the rescue animal just as it would any for other pet ensuring it gets meals, exercise, socialization, training, and grooming. The cost involved for fostering an animal is normally limited to food and other essentials although most rescue organizations will incur any medical costs. Additionally, since fosterers often times spend as much time or more with an animal than the rescue organization, they are often called upon to report on the behavioral tendencies and personalities of the pet to potential adopters.
An ideal foster home candidate is anyone who is willing to take on the responsibilities of caretaking for an animal for a short period of time. Foster homes will have to be up to the challenge of caring for an animal that is acclimating to a new environment. I say this because sometimes animals are shy or exercise poor behavior when adapting to a new place. Therefore, the foster family needs to have patience with the animal during the getting-to-know-you period.
Additionally, a good foster home doesn't necessarily have to be pet-free. In fact, it is a common situation since most animal lovers have at least one pet at home. Just as a normal adoption process, rescue organizations will work to match rescue animals with your lifestyle.
A fosterer should also be prepared for the potential feeling of sadness when the animal is placed in a permanent home. However, it is bittersweet knowing that a life was saved. And, sometimes fosterers develop such a bond with their rescued friends that they end up adopting them permanently!
Interested foster home participants can start the fostering process by searching the Internet for local rescue organization. For example, at www.paws4you.org information is available on dogs up for adoption and many of them would benefit from placement in a foster home. Potential fosterers can also come by any of our events to meet some of our rescued animals or send an email to foster@paws4you.org.

| HELP US SAVE A LIFE! |
Paws 4 You Rescue is an organization of all volunteers that exists based on the gifts and contributions from the community. Our funding is purely based on those of us who love dogs, know what dogs do for their owners, and have a sense of compassion for the mass numbers of animals euthanized each year in Dade county and surrounding areas.
Where does the money go?
The money donated to Paws 4 You Rescue is used for the salvation of animals from the harsh and unforgiving environment at Animal Services. They are then taken to a reputable veterinarian for spay/neuter, vaccines, heartworm treatment and kennel cough treatment (when applicable). If they are in need of surgical procedures it is provided to them as well. In addition to these initial costs of rescuing, there is the money that will be contributed to the feeding, treatment (if necessary), and housing of the animals until homes are found. As we are still in search of our own location, we must lease the space at our local vet clinics to house our animals until they are placed. When they come out of animal services these dogs enter the Paws 4 You family, treating them as our own, until they are matched with loving people who will continue the effort that we have started.
How do I donate?
As you can imagine, there are many ways to donate. One way is to give time in the form of volunteering to help walk, run, wash, train, and show the dogs. Second is to foster, or sponsor a dog to help alleviate some of the boarding costs, and space, keeping us from helping more animals. Third is to donate crates, red leashes, red collars, beds, toys, blankets, and treats. Another key way to donate is to sponsor or help organize a fundraising event in the attempt to raise awareness and educate as many people possible on the reasons why over 48,000 cats and dogs were euthanized in Miami Dade in 2007. Attending events such as our Pawtini Pawty at Martini Bar at Sunset Place on September 20 or signing up for our annual golf tournament, Putt for Paws, planned for October 13 -- and telling all your friends and family -- is a fun way to support us too! Lastly your financial support is always a great way to help the rescue.
If you would like to contribute to the ongoing efforts of Paws 4 You Rescue, you are able to visit the website at www.paws4you.org and make a donation using our Pay Pal link or send a check made payable to Paws 4 You Rescue to PO Box 561163, Miami, FL 33256. Of course, you are always welcome visit us in person at the PETSMART location across from The Falls on Sunday. Because Paws 4 You Rescue is a non-profit organiations with 501(c)3 status, donations are tax deductible!

With your donations as well as all adoption fees, we at Paws 4 You are able to continue to give as many dogs as possible a second chance at life.
