 As each day passes and I continue to hear the tragic news about the death and destruction occurring in our Gulf of Mexico, I often wonder if there is something the Museum should or could do to help. Yet, we can't send money or staff because we barely have enough to keep our own doors open. I guess we could seek donations to send to the organizations that are directly confronting the environmental impact of the oil spill, but then would that not be a serious conflict with our own fundraising needs?

Then it occurred to me as I heard the enthusiastic voices of our current Summer Camp participants and remembered the discovery by our campers last summer of a critically endangered Kemp's Ridley sea turtle that was building a nest at Bald Point State Park. This discovery, the campers' photos and the journal entries they made helped biologists find and protect the rare turtle's nest, from which more than 100 hatchlings later safely emerged. [  more  ]

Museum Preschool Wins Accolades
APPLE AccreditationThe Tallahassee Museum's renowned Preschool has won numerous accolades this year, including being named Child Care Program of the Year by the Early Learning Coalition of the Big Bend Region. The Preschool also earned national accreditation by APPLE (Accredited Professional Preschool Learning Environment) and a state Gold Seal Quality of Care designation. [  more  ]
Thanks to PBSJ Foundation & Peter Brown Construction
pbsjfoundationSummer Camps are under way and the place is abuzz with kids learning about plants, animals, habitats, science, history and folk ways. Thanks to a $5,000 grant from the PBSJ Foundation and Peter Brown Construction, qualified children will be attending camp on need-based scholarships.  [ more ]
Summer Camp Time!
summercampThe Tallahassee Museum provides wholesome, outdoor summer experiences for youth, including nature-based camps and field trips to learn about wildlife and the environment, history-based camps to learn about communities and ways of life from yesteryear, and science-based camps covering subjects such as geology, flight, and hurricanes.
 
The Museum's summer camps run through Aug. 20.  Their intriguing titles include "Wilderness Expedition,"  "Fort Building," "Passport," "Nature Photography," "Creative Cooking" and "Masters of Mad Science." For older campers, the Museum's experienced staff also leads field trips to destinations such as the Florida Caverns, local beaches, natural springs, and Florida's historic capitol.  [ more ]
Phipps Gallery - Florida Girls and Boys & Their Toys!
florida girls and boysToys of yesteryear will be featured this summer in the "Florida Girls & Boys & Their Toys" exhibit in the Phipps Gallery. This collection of toys, photographs and videos will be a blast for all ages, whether you are seeing these toys for the first time ever or for the first time in years.
 
The exhibit will appear in the Museum's Phipps Gallery  through Aug. 1. It  is on loan from the Museum of Florida History Traveling Exhibits Program (TREX)  and is sponsored  in part by the City of Tallahassee, Leon County, and the Council on Culture & Arts.[ more ]
Tallahassee Museum Recognized as Non-Profit of the Year
The Greater Tallahassee Chamber of Commerce named the Tallahassee Museum "Non-Profit Organization of the Year" at its 25th annual Small Business Excellence awards luncheon on June 8. The Museum was one of eight award winners from a field of 70 nominees.  [ more ]
Market Days Named a Top 20 Event
market days logoMarket Days, the Museum's major annual fund-raising event, was recently named a "Top 20" event by the Southeast Tourism Society. This elite recognition will give our wonderful, juried arts and crafts show valuable exposure to tourists and tour operators across the nation!  [ more ]
Museum Becomes Blue Star
bluestarOn Memorial Day, the Museum joined in a national program to support active-duty military personnel and their families by providing free admission to the Museum through Labor Day. The program is a partnership of the National Endowment for the Arts and the Blue Star Families network.  [ more ]
