Happy Thanksgiving!

Considering this economy it is understandable why so many, so often, including me, cannot resist finding the glass half full. In politics, we too often complain about all of what we lack and yet in many ways we have so much in comparison. We find evils, the culprits and spend time complaining and fault-finding. Yet as an American and a Virginian, a husband and a father, a Christian and your Delegate, I know that there is much for which to be thankful and I maintain that better days are ahead.

As the Governor wrote, "it is a Virginia tradition for our citizens to come together in unity on Thanksgiving Day and give thanks for the great level of serenity, harmony and abundance with which we, as citizens of a free nation, have been blessed; the rule of law by which we peaceably govern ourselves and by which our civil and religious liberties are guaranteed; and the brave servicemen and women of our armed forces who risk their lives to defend the freedoms and blessings we cherish"

I hope you will join me in finding one if not many more things for which we can honestly be thankful. If we are trying to change consumer confidence and turn this economy around it may just start with a burst of thankfulness. Imagine that when America was taken with Civil War and only four months after Gettysburg the President wrote this enclosed message which established the last Thursday of November "as a day of Thanksgiving and Praise." What say you?

By the President of the United States of America.

A Proclamation.

The year that is drawing towards its close, has been filled with the blessings of fruitful fields and healthful skies. To these bounties, which are so constantly enjoyed that we are prone to forget the source from which they come, others have been added, which are of so extraordinary a nature, that they cannot fail to penetrate and soften even the heart which is habitually insensible to the ever watchful providence of Almighty God. In the midst of a civil war of unequaled magnitude and severity, which has sometimes seemed to foreign States to invite and to provoke their aggression, peace has been preserved with all nations, order has been maintained, the laws have been respected and obeyed, and harmony has prevailed everywhere except in the theatre of military conflict; while that theatre has been greatly contracted by the advancing armies and navies of the Union. Needful diversions of wealth and of strength from the fields of peaceful industry to the national defence, have not arrested the plough, the shuttle or the ship; the axe has enlarged the borders of our settlements, and the mines, as well of iron and coal as of the precious metals, have yielded even more abundantly than heretofore. Population has steadily increased, notwithstanding the waste that has been made in the camp, the siege and the battle-field; and the country, rejoicing in the consciousness of augmented strength and vigor, is permitted to expect continuance of years with large increase of freedom. No human counsel hath devised nor hath any mortal hand worked out these great things. They are the gracious gifts of the Most High God, who, while dealing with us in anger for our sins, hath nevertheless remembered mercy. It has seemed to me fit and proper that they should be solemnly, reverently and gratefully acknowledged as with one heart and one voice by the whole American People. I do therefore invite my fellow citizens in every part of the United States, and also those who are at sea and those who are sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next, as a day of Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens. And I recommend to them that while offering up the ascriptions justly due to Him for such singular deliverances and blessings, they do also, with humble penitence for our national perverseness and disobedience, commend to His tender care all those who have become widows, orphans, mourners or sufferers in the lamentable civil strife in which we are unavoidably engaged, and fervently implore the interposition of the Almighty Hand to heal the wounds of the nation and to restore it as soon as may be consistent with the Divine purposes to the full enjoyment of peace, harmony, tranquillity and Union.

In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Seal of the United States to be affixed.

Done at the City of Washington, this Third day of October, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty-three, and of the Independence of the Unites States the Eighty-eighth.

General Assembly Pages, Interns, and Host Families Needed

Election season has just wrapped up and General Assembly session is quickly approaching, which means The Family Foundation is in the midst of important preparation. One of the critical elements of our preparation includes finding student interns and pages that can assist our legislative team in our advocacy work in our Richmond office. Both our college intern and high school page programs offer students a valuable opportunity to experience the activities of a General Assembly session firsthand. There will be unique opportunities to observe legislative committee meetings, floor sessions of the House of Delegates and Senate, and much more. Candidates for the intern and page positions must have a pro-life, pro-family perspective on social issues and a biblical worldview of the roles of politics, government and the church.

Additionally, The Family Foundation is searching for host families in the Metro Richmond area who would be willing to house a college intern during the 60-day General Assembly.

The Family Foundation's 2012 General Assembly team will begin session work Monday, January 9th and conclude Friday, March 9th. Those desiring more information or those interested in serving should contact Jessica Cochrane by phone at 804-343-0010 or by email at

Jessica@familyfoundation.org

Intern Program (College)

Interns assist staff in actively monitoring legislation, attending General Assembly committee meetings, research and writing, assisting with our annual Lobby Day, and development projects as needed. Candidates for this position should be available at least 2 full days per week, but preferably more. The optimal candidate for this position would be organized and self-motivated, able to work without constant supervision, and have some skill in research and writing. Both credit and non-credit internships are welcome. Parking is provided and housing can be arranged if necessary.

Page Program (High School)

Pages are responsible for the efficient maintenance of information within The Family Foundation's General Assembly Operations Room and information exchange between The Family Foundation and the members of the General Assembly. Pages assist Family Foundation legislative staff in the accomplishment of their daily tasks, delivery of information to the General Assembly building, and administrative responsibilities in the development department. Pages are encouraged to work at least two (half or full) days per week. The more days a page is in the office, the more he or she will learn and experience.

Host Families (Metro-Richmond Families)

Host families must reside in the Metro Richmond area and will assist in the legislative efforts of The Family Foundation by housing a college intern during the 60-day General Assembly session. Please contact Jessica Cochrane by phone at 804-343-0010 or by email at Jessica@familyfoundation.org  for more details or if you would considering being a host family.
