Message from Chris
A prominent landscaper once pondered "What is one to say about June, the time of perfect young summer, the fulfillment of the promise of the earlier months, and with as yet no sign to remind one that its fresh young beauty will ever fade." I love June. It is a month of new beginnings. Weddings. Graduations. And of course, Flag Day, summer fairs, festivals, and Q's!
Fresh off a beautiful Memorial Day weekend where families and communities paused to reflect upon the supreme sacrifices of American men and women who fought for freedom's promise we enter these busy summer months. For many it is a time of activity and others an opportunity to get away and relax. In state government, the work however continues.
As a state legislator I am busier than ever attending meetings, convening work groups, planning for 2011 legislation and attending numerous community events across the 7 counties in the 97th district. You can find many examples of June events enclosed in this newsletter.
Today, in particular, launched the first meeting of Governor McDonnell's reform and restructuring commission. Much hope, optimism and energy will be directed to new ways to make government work more efficiently, smarter and at a savings to the taxpayer. It is too early to tell whether the work product of this group will materialize and produce the intended reforms planned by prior commission such as the Wilder Commission. If you have good ideas for reform and restructuring please forward them to me.
Thank you as always for the honor of serving as your delegate to the Virginia General Assembly. |

Boating: Pass a test first | As of 2007, state law requires Virginia boaters to pass a safety course, which can be taken online or in a classroom as presented by the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries. The law is being phased in according to age and the type of boat being operated.
There are more than 250,000 registered motorboats in Virginia, including 30,000 personal watercrafts. In the past five years, Virginia has recorded more than 700 recreational boating accidents, resulting in nearly 100 fatalities, according to the game department. Personal watercraft make up almost 10 percent of all registered boats and were involved in 22.6 percent of all boating accidents. RiteCare | The Scottish Rite Childhood Language Center was founded by the Richmond Scottish Rite Organization in 1989. The Center, a 501 (c) 3 not-for-profit organization, is a speech, language and hearing clinic for children. The mission of the Center is to provide speech, language and hearing services to children, with fees based on a family or agency's ability to pay. Located on the north side of Richmond, the Scottish Rite Childhood Language Center tests and treats children birth through 18 years of age. Our Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologist diagnose and treat disorders of articulation, language, voice, fluency (stuttering), hearing and auditory processing. These disorders, if left untreated, impact children socially, academically, psychologically and behaviorally. Since opening our doors in 1991, the Scottish Rite Childhood Language Center has worked with 9,200 children. Many of these youngsters would not have been able to receive the treatment needed without our assistance because medical insurance does not frequently pay for communication services unless the result of an accident or traumatic injury. Thankfully, we are here to help. To date, we have provided financially assisted services in the amount of $2,089,251. We are very proud of this accomplishment and work hard to raise the funds needed to make this possible. The Scottish Rite Childhood Language Center is very active in our community. We strive to develop lasting partnerships with individuals, organizations, corporations and foundations. We believe that by working together, we can improve the lives of children living in the Richmond area. If you have any questions about our program or know of a child in need, please contact the Executive Director, Robin K. Olivier, M.S. CCC-SLP at (804) 266-6699.
