Message from the Administration

It's hard to believe, but March 27th marked the 70th day of the McDonnell administration. The General Assembly session was grueling but successful.
Governor McDonnell was successful on all three of his priorities for his first session in office. The General Assembly passed a balanced budget without raising taxes despite record budget shortfalls.  The Governor's "Jobs and Opportunity Agenda" to spur job-creation and economic development received overwhelming bipartisan support. And the Governor's "Opportunity to Learn" education reform effort was also passed into law with strong backing from both parties. Even though the session has concluded, our work has not! In fact, it's just beginning. The Governor will be spending the coming year continuing to focus on job creation, government reform, transportation,  and higher education. And we will also be turning our attention to the critical task of appointing members to Virginia's many boards and commissions.

As you may know, these appointments are some of the most important decisions Governor McDonnell will make during his term.  Governor McDonnell has repeatedly said that he is looking for the "best and brightest" to serve in these capacities, so please consider being willing to serve on one of the 345 volunteer boards or commissions that are active in the Commonwealth today.

In our ongoing effort to make government more efficient, streamline procedures, and save taxpayer money on printing, paper and postage, I am pleased to announce that the Secretary of the Commonwealth's office is automating the application process for Boards and Commissions. The process for applying and for nominating an applicant to serve on a Board or Commission will be electronically housed at the
Secretary of the Commonwealth's website.

This new online application system (OASYS) will be up and running by April 1 and will allow you to submit your own application or provide nominations for boards and commissions. Not only are we alerting you so that you can consider your willingness to serve, but we are also asking for your help in recommending qualified, service-minded Virginians to fill these positions.

In order for applications and nominations to be fully considered for the approximately 900 appointment openings in June, we are asking that all applications be submitted online by April 15th.  Once OASYS is up and running, you will receive a notification that it is operational and ready for applications.

For now, please take a few minutes to review the 2010 Appointment vacancies by clicking here. Please note that it is common for there to be a specific requirement or experience to serve on a board or commission.  A basic explanation of the requirement can be found in the fourth column of the appointments document linked above.

Thank you in advance for your help and support relating to boards and commissions.  We look forward to helping ensure a prosperous and vibrant future for Virginia though the hard work of committed public servants who care about their fellow citizens and want to be a part of building "A Commonwealth of Opportunity" for all Virginians.
