childrensSummer. It will be here before you know it. Now that I am older, I look back and think of my summers. Think with me. Remember in college where you got to do some cool stuff, but you needed to make some cash so you worked, but seemed like you spent most of your money before you went back to school? Remember back in high school when you just wanted to hang out with friends and summer was just too short? Remember when you were a kid and you would go to bed and the sun would still be up and you would think to yourself how unfair because other kids stayed up super late? I still get to have a kid's summer. I mean, think about it! I get to go to Planet 56 Day Camp, Summer Camp, VBS and Costa Rica. And I get to stay up even after the sun has gone down!
But when I think of the things that have made up my best summers, I think of Camp Good News. I mean, I love Day Camp and it's craziness and VBS and hanging out with cool kids and volunteers, but Camp Good News. Man. I love it! But as I have gotten older, camp has changed for me from just good times to meaningful times. I have seen kids that came to camp and didn't know anyone go home with a whole cabin full of friends. I have seen shy kids be able to come to camp and end up clowning around on the camp video.  I have seen kids that didn't know God go home with a real relationship with God. I have seen kids that never read the Bible go home and read their Bible each night. Lives are changed at camp and I have been blessed to see it happen.
So fasten your seat belt, because Summer 2010 is going to be here before you know. Are you ready to stay up after the sun goes down? Are you ready to see lives changed?

Under His mercy,
Eric

lisaI love summer...
Summer is definitely one of my favorite times of the year and I think a big part of that is because of the memories I have of them!  When I was in high-school and in college I worked at a Christian camp each summer and it still holds some of my favorite memories and where I met some of my best friends.  I loved meeting new people, being outside and constantly growing in my relationship with Christ.  One of my favorite things that we do here is take our 3rd-6th grade students to Camp Good News during the summer.  It's so fun to see the kids so excited as were loading up the busses to leave and then as we pull into camp.  Camp is one of those places that you can get away, make new friends and learn more about Jesus along with doing some pretty fun things like blobbing, the zip line and other fun activities.  It's so awesome to see these kids grow as they are trying new things every day and trying things that might be out of their comfort zone...to see them completely trust in God as they are letting go to go off the zip line or jumping off of a pole to catch a trapeze is something pretty incredible.  To see them worship and not care who is around them but whole-heartedly worship is simply amazing.  Camp changes people.  If you have a child who is in a 3-6th grader I definitely recommend signing them up to go to Camp Good News this summer, it will be a week they will never forget!

With Joy,
Lisa Keil

We are booked.  It's official!  The 5th and 6th graders are going to play paintball and ride the Texas Free Fall at Splashtown.  Well, I plan on riding the Texas Free Fall at Splashtown.  Your child may be smarter than I am and choose not to be terrorized in that way!
It may still be a little cold outside, but things have been heating up around the children's ministry office.  I was asked to vote on water bottles for Good News Camp; I debated over t-shirt fabrics and color choices that both boys and girls would like for Day camp; and just today posters advertising our camps landed on my desk!
I am a kid at heart.  I get excited about the thought of summer vacation and church camp.  Just the other day my son asked me, "Do I get to go to church camp this summer?"  When I replied, "Yes," he did a fist pump combined with a slide across the floor.  Now that was enthusiasm!
Church camp is fun, whether it's VBS, P56 Day camp or Camp Good News.  As a staff member, I feel so fortunate to be able to attend all three.  Camp is about new experiences, being away from home, and building new relationships.  I witnessed great things last summer.  I saw kids challenge themselves to really leap into the air as an act of faith, literally.  They jumped off a blog, a power pole and a zip line at Camp Good News; they went down the Texas Free Fall at Day camp; and they worked together to send an 8 foot beach ball soaring to new heights at VBS.
I also witnessed leaps of faith when I saw kids take a moment to pray before doing something challenging; I saw leaps of faith when kids spontaneously raised their arms in praise while singing;  I saw leaps of faith when kids who had never owned their own Bible, learned how to look up verses and read The Word for themselves; I saw leaps of faith when kids encouraged each other to try something new and then I saw leaps of faith when I saw those same kids offer sympathy and support when their friend or teammate could not muster the courage to take that challenge.
I look forward to summer and our Church camps for the fun and adventure.  But I also look forward to our camps because of the possibilities.  What are the possibilities of a child, maybe your child, leaping out in faith with arms raised in praise?  I can't wait to be a witness to that!!!!

The sun is out but the air is still chilly. I can't wait for the warm summer days to get here.  There are so many things to look forward to - flip flops and capris are a few of those things! But also, all the special events that start in June, like the tiny Kinder
Kiddos bridging over to the upstairs area to Clubhouse 21 during our ice cream social. Camp Good News is also in June. Boys and girls cheer each other on through some amazing rope courses and exciting water fun games.  There is just something amazing about a week away at camp surrounded by nature, bonding with friends and getting closer to God.  Then July gets here before you know it and it is time for a Costa Rica run. I am so excited to go there for the second time. This time it will be very special, to go back and see our friends again and how much their church has grown. But the best part will to be able to share this trip with my daughter Gabi. She is now 12 years of age and fully engaged in confirmation. She has talked about
going to Costa Rica for the past two years and has been saving birthday and Christmas money to help out with the cost. She has been practicing her spanish and hopefully will be somewhat fluent by the time we get to Costa Rica. Gabi is a daring and brave young girl, excited and ready to hit the Zip Line; unlike her mom, which
has yet to experience it! My daughter makes me smile and proud, I can always tell in her eyes that she is ready to help and serve; ready to do more. Costa Rica will be a blast!  Then August comes in a snap with VBS! A week full of fun with over
600 kids and about 200 volunteers roaming every inch of the church. You can feel the excitement in the air, just seeing all the smiling faces and hearing the beautiful little voices worshiping God every day!  Now that is summer to look forward to; a summer filled with God working through our children. Plus the the flip flops too of course!

So I have a funny story to tell you...the other day Makayla my oldest, who is 9 years old, asked me when she could have a boyfriend.  Wow!  I was not expecting that question at all.  So, I asked her what she thought a "boyfriend" was.  And she said "Well, there are boys who are friends and boys that you 'go out' with."  What?  Go out with?  So then I asked her "What do you do with this boyfriend of yours?"  And she said, "We talk during recess."  Oh, how I remember being that way as a young girl!  I cannot believe that my little girl is growing up.  My prayer for her (and all young girls) is that God is evident in all that she does and she holds Him on a pedestal and no boy or man.  God is her protector and the protector of my heart!!!

On a side note...I can hardly believe that we are already planning for our summer events!  Every year I am in amazement about how fast the year seems to fly.  It is exciting though to get our events like Camp Good News and Vacation Bible School going in the planning process!  Mark your calendars for these events and check our website regularly to get all the updates!  Watch out for the Heroes coming to VBS this summer and be ready to Take Your Stand during Camp Good news!

Don't forget we are still selling "Walk the Walk" t-shirts for $5.00!!! We have kids and adult sizes!

I just wanted to take a minute and tell you about the wonderful things God is doing in Special Blessings Ministry.  First of all he is sending us your precious child!  Thank you for trusting us with your little one!  You are a blessing in our lives and the lives of the volunteers. When you entrust us with your child, we serve you and by doing that we serve our Lord.
Second, we have new volunteers who have listen to God's call to serve Him through Special Blessings!  The exciting part of this is that some of the volunteers are junior volunteers who have completed or are currently in Confirmation classes.  Wow!  God is moving in a younger generation and who am I to stand in His way?!  I am please and blessed to bring these volunteers on board and partner them with an adult shadow to help nurture them, teach them, and serve with them.  The next time you see a new face it might just be the face of a new servant of Christ!  I encourage you to introduce yourself and welcome them into our Special Blessings Family!
Lastly, with the new volunteers we are able to do new and more things on Sunday mornings!  As some of you know we have an inclusion classroom upstairs for Clubhouse 21 and Studio 34!!!  Its rockin' and rollin' and growing!  Rainforest classroom downstairs is still available but I am please to be adding an inclusion classroom for our Rainforest kiddos (Pre-K and K)!  We will be starting this classroom soon, I will keep you posted!  My goal is to have the Rainforest and Learning Lab available for hygiene purposes as well as a place of peace and quiet (for our children with sensory sensitivity) separate from the new inclusion classroom downstairs!  Wow!  God is truly taking care of our Ministry and HIS children!
I look forward to the new growth and seeing you on Sunday!  Thank you again for entrusting us with your precious child.  I love you and your family very much and you are always on my mind and in my prayers!
