"Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your
sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the
Lord"
Acts 3:19
Greetings!
Peter has just healed a crippled man in this story
from Acts. After the healing, he turns to the people present and
preaches a little sermon on God's faithfulness and how forgiveness is
being offered to them through Jesus Christ. Even
though God has acted in Jesus to forgive our sins, Peter still calls
the people to repent...
A common theme for many people during Lent has
always been "Repent" and "Believe." It seems that most people don't
have a problem with the theme of repentance during the season of Lent.
The history of the church supports the days before
Easter as days of introspection and self-examination in order to change
one's behavior to "get right with God." But then it seems that we are
quick to put repentance away. We focus, instead, on the salvation
granted at the cross as well we should. But Peter
reminds us that if Jesus' death and resurrection doesn't make any
difference in our lives then we might have a problem...
Spring is the time of new growth. Flowers push
their way to the surface and bloom brightly in parks and gardens. Grass
begins to grow, mowing begins, and we spend time outdoors basking in
the sunshine. Our spiritual life should reflect
this same period of new growth. Easter is the time of life, eternal
life, blooming brightly in our lives. We need to savor that time,
clutch the joy of the resurrection to our chest and breathe deeply of
the fresh air of forgiveness.
But just as a gardener prepares
the soil and tends it to new growth, we need to tend the garden of our
spiritual lives. Start your new growth with time
spent in prayer. Read the scriptures daily. Listen to God calling out
to you. Repent...and believe....
