Sunday at St. Mark's     

The Year of the Story continues this morning in Morrill Hall from 9:00-9:45am as we take a year-long mountain-top tour of the Bible! Each Sunday we will discuss a major Bible story, beginning with Genesis and ending with Revelation. This morning Father Peter leads a discussion of the Rise of the Monarchy.

Foundations for Discipleship Sunday!  This is a class intended for newcomers and adults preparing for baptism or confirmation but open to everyone. It will have 12 sessions spanning the program year; this class concludes the fall session.  It will meet promptly at 11:15am in the Education Center (large classroom) and it will cover the basics of the faith including Jesus, the Bible, prayer, the sacraments, and church music. So grab a cup of coffee after church and head right to the class this morning. Today, Father Peter will lead a discussion about prayer.  (Fall dates:  October 17, 24, 31, November 7)   (Winter: January 9-February 13; Spring: March 20-April 10)

Bible Marathon Discussion Sunday! Come to the Outreach Center (small classroom) at 11:30am to discuss your Bible reading (we are up to 2 Samuel). Next discussion group is this Thursday from 10-11am in the Education Center (large classroom).

Haydn's Missa BrevisAll Saints' Sunday Evening Choral Eucharist includes the Parish Choir singing Haydn's Missa Brevis Sancta Johannis De Deo. This service of remembrance is at 5:00 p.m. Sunday and will be less than an hour. 

The Donor Recognition Center is being finalized. New lists with name corrections have been posted inside Morrill Hall. Double-check your listing and contact Dick DePatie in the office with changes; the cut-off date is here! 

The Lion's Den Book & Gift Store is almost in full Christmas gear.  Christmas cards, 2011 calendars, and magical gifts are appearing.  For your shopping convenience, beginning in November we will be open Saturdays from 9 to 1.  Hope to see you soon and thank you for supporting your church store!

We Welcome New Vestry Member Dean Davis.  Dean has been appointed by the vestry to serve a partial term replacing Jim Hilboldt. Jim recently resigned from the vestry due to his new job in Washington, D.C.  Our thanks to him for his dedicated work and commitment to the church.

New Canaan Sewing Group Annual Holiday Boutique takes place at St. Mark's on Friday, November 19 in Morrill Hall, from 9am-1pm.  Lovely handmade items crafted by fine sewers, knitters, quilters and needlepointers are available for early Christmas ­­shopping.  All proceeds benefit local charitable organizations.

Helen Palmesi is Retiring as Director of St. Mark's Nursery School in spring 2011 after 20 years of dedicated service; a Search Committee has been formed to fill her position and we are currently accepting applications.  A job description has been posted on the nursery school website -please share it with prospective candidates you would recommend for the position, or other contacts who might know of qualified candidates.  Recommendations may be directed to: smnsdirectorsearch@stmarksnewcanaan.org.

Sunday GreetersSunday Morning Greeters Needed. Sign-up sheets are outside the library or contact Judy Webb: judyatbank@aol.com with your availability, and she will sign you up.   We need 2 sets of 2 greeters each week.  It's fun and very easy!

The Food Pantry is running low on supplies while the demands are increasing.  Please help us restock our shelves with the supplies listed below.  Donations should be brought to the Undercroft, down the ramp by the lower parking lot; food can be put on tables along far left wall of room.

Children and Family Ministries                           Registration

Church School begins at 9:50am.  PK3-2nd drop-off is in the Library.  3rd-4th grades in the Halloween2Education Center.  5th in Outreach Center.  Please help us minimize classroom distractions by being on-time; we only have 40 minutes.  The children enter church at the Peace.   All baptized children are invited to receive communion in the Episcopal Church.

race to nowhereSave the Date:  Wednesday, December 1st 7pm in Morrill Hall: St. Mark's Youth is sponsoring a viewing and discussion of the documentary "Race to Nowhere" which highlights the problems and pressures of an achievement culture and seeks to spark a community conversation about a better way.  All Youth and Parents are welcome to attend.  More information to come.  If you're interested in helping to organize or promote the event, please contact Cyra Borsy at cyraq@aol.com.  The Sr. High youth group will follow-up with a 4 part discussion series on related topics during Advent.

Week Day Adult Education & Worship

Monday Morning Class continues on Mondays in the Library from 9:15-10:30am. This is an intergenerational parenting and grandparenting group and discussion based on Dorothy Martyn's new book, "Beyond Deserving: Children, Parents, and Responsibility Revisited."  Please read chapter 7 & 8 for Monday. Child care is provided.

James MorrisNew Monday Class Begins Soon - "Finding Meaning in the Second Half of Life" by James Hollis, PhD, will be the focus of our next Monday class. Join Mother Anne and fellow parishioners (from all stages of life!) on Mondays from 9:15-10:30 in the Library as we discuss key life issues such as barriers to transformation, the dynamics of intimate relationship, the family during the second half of life, and career vs. vocation. Childcare provided. This class begins on Monday, November 22. The book is available in the Lion's Den.

Wednesday Morning Bible Study continues in the Education Center from 10-11am. Bishop Grein leads a class on apocalyptic literature in preparation for a study of the Book of Revelation. All are welcome.

Meditation Group meets each Thursday morning from 9:00-9:30am in the Parlor in the Parish House (please note change of location). All welcome, including beginners.

Bible Marathon Has Begun! Read through the Bible cover to cover (that's right, every word) in six months (October-early May, with a break during December).  Check our website for the reading plan; hard copies are also available in Morrill Hall and the parish office. Feel free to participate in the Marathon even if you can't make the meetings. We will have discussion meetings on Thursday mornings and Sunday mornings - check the syllabus for the dates. Next discussion meeting is today after church in the Outreach Center (small classroom) and this Thurs, Nov 11, both in the Ed Center (large classroom). Come even if you haven't finished/done the reading if you'd like.
