Dear Friends,
Have you ever wondered how you might help Bear Necessities Pediatric Cancer Foundation raise funds for our many worthwhile programs and services? Well, we have a few examples to help you!
1. Hold your own fundraising event (individuals or corporations). You can do this in many ways including through Firstgiving.com. Host any type of party and in lieu of hostess gifts ask for donations, "dress down" days at the office, office pot-luck lunches, fashion shows, craft shows, or block parties are just a few ways to support your favorite charity.
2. Start your own fundraising page on Active.com. You can run a marathon, half marathon, tri, 5K or any athletic competition you choose to raise funds.
3. Matching gift programs are an easy way to support your cause and in many cases, the dollars designated for these programs go unused. Take advantage of your company's porgram and multiply your generosity!
4. Contribute through the Combined Federal Campaign. Civil or military employees can contribute to BNPCF through the Combined Federal Campaign by registering this September during the enrollment period. More details to follow in the coming months!
5. Calling all Bearlanthropists! This is a wonderful way for kids to help kids. Individuals, classrooms, entire schools, scouting groups and clubs can hold car washes, bake sales, garage sales, donated birthday or mitzvah gifts, basically just be creative and have fun!
These are just a few ways that you can begin to get involved in helping us in our mission to eliminate pediatric cancer and to provide hope and support to those who are touched by it. Most importantly, know that your donations will greatly assist us in this mission and without you, we can't begin to reach the amount of children in need that we do.
Thank you for your consideration,
Kathleen

FEATURED SMALL MIRACLE |

Sydney

When Sydney, 6, woke up one morning, her parents told her they had a big surprise in store for her that afternoon! Ten family members gathered at her home to be part of Sydney's special day. They asked her if she could go anywhere, where would it be?
Sydney began to jump up and down and chant "American Girl Place!" Her Mom told her to go upstairs to her room and look on her bed. There, Sydney found a matching outfit for her and her two American Girl Dolls to wear. Sydney smiled, quickly changed outfits and put the new outfits on her dolls. She was overjoyed and could not believe that she and her family were off to American Girl Place on Michigan Avenue!
When Sydney and her family arrived, they were warmly greeted and Sydney was presented with a gift card. Sydney referred to it as her credit card all afternoon. Without wasting any time at all, Sydney picked out two hairstyles for her dolls and also had their ears pierced. Sydney was running through the store with a sparkle in her eye and a big smile on her face reciting she was on a mission. In addition to what she picked out for her dolls, she picked out a brand new doll and a slew of accessories.
After shopping, Sydney and her family sat down to enjoy lunch in the American Girl Place Cafe. Sydney giggled and could not stop talking about how she was finally there and was out of the hospital to enjoy something special.
Sydney had a fantastic time, and so did her family. They couldn't remember seeing her this happy in a long time. The experience brought a smile to everyone's face. |
| ANNUAL VOLUNTEER RECOGNITION RECEPTION | |
Pictured left to right: DeRondal Bevly, Lisa Fiore, Joe Teson, Karen Roark, Rachel Kelley, Sue Hallen and Kathleen Casey
On Thursday, April 29th, a group of Bear Necessities volunteers, board members, and staff celebrated National Volunteer Appreciation Month and eighteen years of dedicated volunteer service. Held at Bear Necessities' downtown office overlooking the Chicago River, the 2010 Volunteer Recognition Reception focused on the organization's incredible story of growth and the critical role our volunteers have played. Guests enjoyed cocktails and appetizers provided by Berghoff Catering and Sweetwater Tavern and Grill, and many participated in a special project to help Bear Necessities decorate the family room in our new office.
Year after year, volunteers help drive Bear Necessities forward in our mission to eliminate pediatric cancer and provide hope and support to those who are touched by it. In the past ten months alone, Bear Necessities' volunteer corps - numbering in excess of 500 - has logged over 2,000 volunteer hours. With the value assigned to one hour of volunteer work in Illinois just over $22, that's an estimated $44,000 in donated time and talents!
Board member, Sue Hallen, winner of The 2010 William W. Hogan Award
Special awards were presented to six individuals for their exceptional support over the past year. The William W. Hogan Award was presented by President/Founder Kathleen Casey to Sue Hallen for Distinguished Board Service. Director of Marketing & PR, Courtney Krupa, along with outgoing Auxiliary Board President, DeRondal Bevly, presented Torrie Hargreaves with the Barrett "Bear" W. Krupa Award for Outstanding Junior Philanthropy. Dave Kurland of the Chicago Bulls was recognized as Outstanding Small Miracle Donor of the Year. And last but certainly not least, three individuals were recognized for their resolute commitment to Bear Necessities' Mission, their demonstration of the organization's Values, and their steadfast promotion of Bear's Philosophy. Bear Necessities' 2010 MVPs were Lisa Fiore, Rachel Kelley, and Joe Teson.
Eighteen years since Bear Necessities' inception, pediatric cancer is still the number one cause of death by disease in our kids. Our work is far from done, but with the steadfast support of our incredible volunteers, Bear Necessities will continue to make a lasting impact in the lives of children and their families impacted by this devastating disease. From all of us, to each of you thank you for all that you have done, and all you continue to do.
Sincere thanks again to Berghoff Catering and Sweetwater Tavern and Grill for the delicious spread, and to Greg Kosinski, our resident bartender.
Special Congratulations
On April 16th, BN board member, Fredrick Bates received the Paul Harris Fellowship Award for Exemplary Service from the Rotary Club of Chicago-Far North for his outstanding work with Bear Necessities. Congratulations Fred for a well-deserved award and your continued support in BN's mission! |

97.9 The Loop and The Trans-Siberian Orchestra

What do you get when you incorporate neoclassical, symphonic and progressive sorts of hard rock/metal complete with a full light show and dozens of pyrotechnics that are synchronized with their performance? The Trans-Siberian Orchestra, also known to many as the TSO.
TSO performed a nearly sold out show in front of 3,300 people on Saturday, April 17th at the Chicago Theater. $1 from every ticket was donated to Bear Necessities Pediatric Cancer Foundation for a total donation of $3,300! Before the show, Bear Necessities was presented with a $3,300 check on stage in front of the audience, and had the opportunity to express gratitude and educate members of the audience about the organization and its mission.
A special thank you to The Loop and TSO for their generosity and continued support to our mission!
Holabird and Root

Special thanks to Andrea Caputo and her colleagues at Holabird and Root, an architectural and engineering firm in Chicago, for the great piggy banks that will be distributed to patients at hospital meals. |
