Dear Friends,
While great strides have been made with pediatric cancer there is still much to be done to find a cure. Therefore, I am pleased to announce that Bear Necessities has joined other leading pediatric cancer foundations across the country to found Childhood Cancer Charities Unite.
Childhood Cancer Charities Unite is a national collaboration of leading nonprofit organizations working together to raise awareness and advance research in an effort to find a cure for childhood cancer.

Through the open exchange of knowledge, research, treatment protocols, and educational activities, the charities will work together to streamline resources, strengthen national awareness and optimize efforts to fight pediatric cancer. We are all hopeful that through our individual efforts and now our collaboration of knowledge we will be able to make a larger impact in the world of pediatric cancer research and ultimately the cure. Stay tuned for more news and as always thank you for your support of Bear Necessities Pediatric Cancer Foundation.
Fondly, Kathleen

FEATURED SMALL MIRACLE |
|
|
Samantha

Samantha, or Sam, as everyone calls her, is an outgoing, young adult with a great sense of humor. She is passionate about foreign languages, studies French, Chinese, Arabic, loves swimming, and is a swim team coach as well!
Sam was diagnosed with Leukemia in March during her senior year of high school. Her Small Miracle request was a prom dress for her senior prom. She is not girly and did not want a princess dress. She picked out a beautiful periwinkle dress and after it was altered, by taking off some sequins and removing some of the "poof", it was perfect. Sam told us her doctor and nurses worked "ridiculously hard to get her to the dance!" They discharged Sam from the hospital with low blood counts to attend senior prom in her new dress. Because her blood counts were low, some ground rules were set. She and her boyfriend, Adam, rode in a stretch limo to their prom and although she was not allowed to cram onto the dance floor, she and Adam found a spot on the edge of the dance floor and were able to dance. Two months before the dance, Sam spent her 18th birthday in the hospital. Sam's dad told her friends in order to come to her party they had to shave their heads. Three of her closest friends attended Sam's birthday party with their heads shaved bald, including a girlfriend! She has a wonderful support system and an incredible sense of humor. Here she is pictured with her boyfriend who is wearing Sam's wig. Sam is looking forward to seeing if her hair will grow back differently and will be a freshman at North Central College this fall. |

| TEAM BEAR 2009 |
|
Over $100,000 raised!!
On October 11th, 67 members of Team Bear completed 26.2 miles at the 2009 Bank of America Chicago Marathon! Race day started off bitterly cold, but our runners were focused, well-trained, and 30 degree weather was just one small detail in the challenge ahead.
Before our runners set out, President/Founder, Kathleen Casey asked them to remember the Small Miracle Ambassadors for whom they were running. When their feet began to hurt like they'd never experienced and the road ahead seemed nearly impossible, the thought of these brave children pushed our runners on. Winding through dozens of Chicago neighborhoods, Team Bear, along with over 33,000 other runners, finished strong. And waiting for our runners back at the Team Bear hospitality tent was a warm breakfast!

Team Bear Members Chris Noon and DeRondal Bevly
Between our marathon runners, and those who ran the Rock-n-Roll half marathon, Team Bear raised more than $100,000 for Bear Necessities! This incredible show of support will have lasting impact in the lives of children touched by pediatric cancer. We are so grateful for their participation and whole-heartedly congratulate every member of Team Bear 2009! |
