No Pane...No Gain!

This month's Conservatory Gala presented the special event's guests with a unique opportunity to help "frost" our 1879 Victorian era glasshouse in an extremely helpful yet relatively "pane-less" manner!  Realizing that the 16,000 panes of Conservatory's glass envelope require a biennial whitewashing, the new community campaign to add frosting to the entire facility can cost a daunting $32,000 with each application.  The Conservatory Gala Committee members, committed to quality youth education programming as well as the proper maintenance and historic integrity of the Conservatory issued a creative challenge to gala attendees to consider helping fund this critical need.

The response was very encouraging as four families stepped forward to provide funding for sizable portions of the outer shell of the Conservatory.  As this important funding momentum has begun, I ask you to consider at this year's end and during the season of giving to also join these conscientious members and supporters to make a donation of 'frosting' to help prepare the Conservatory for the summer season of 2011.

Please share in the frosting by Clicking here .Whitewashing the Conservatory

In the spirit of the season, I also want to mention the "Frosting the Conservatory" Family Fun Workshop" planned for Saturday, December 11th . Drop by the Orchid Gallery from 11 am to 3 pm. Geared to children four to fourteen, all with a sweet tooth are welcome! At their own creative level and interpretation, workshop participants will make a gingerbread greenhouse and decorate it with frosting and candy treats to take home and decorate your holiday table.  Either way, don't miss this sweet, sweet special event.

Happy Holidays to you from all of us at the Conservatory of Flowers...we truly hope this season is filled with beauty, inspiration and wonderful memories for you, your family and friends!

WHAT'S IN BLOOM? Mayoxanthus in Highlands

Winter is upon us and clusters of small fragrant flowers rest like snowballs on our beautiful Myoxanthus. One of approximately 50 species, this Latin American orchid's name is derived from the Greek for "dormouse" and "flower." The genus is closely related to Pleurothallis but is not often seen outside of personal collections.

Mayoxanthus is located in the Highlands Gallery, along the northwest side of the 'pit'. Its bloom should last through the holiday weekend.
