Dear ,

"Growing Memberships"

I so enjoyed working the front doors of the Conservatory this month at one of our evening member events.  With the Conservatory membership growing past the 1,200 member household level in its 3rd year, we have the opportunity to engage with nearly 3,000 individuals who support the Conservatory in a variety of important ways.

As our 1879 Victorian era glasshouse ages, we are aggressively addressing the resource needs to assure the architectural integrity of the building and the proper conservation and presentation of our tremendous tropical plant collections.  Focused financial appeals are extended to our supporters to provide for the short and long-term needs of the Conservatory.

In our mission-related objective of "connecting people to plants", we greatly appreciate the energy and enthusiasm of vibrant corps of volunteers.  Jungle tours and personalized presentations by our docents add a wonderful dimension to the Conservatory's permanent collections as well as CHOMP! 2 and the New Guinea exhibitions.

As our cool, foggy summer weather begins to wane, I hope you can make plans to visit the Conservatory often in the warm, sunny days in the coming months.  Our retail shop inside offers some excellent specialty plants and gift items, and Xanath at the Conservatory has quickly become a popular and tasty stop for a sandwich, snack and beverage in front of the Conservatory for Golden Gate Park visitors - and the frozen yogurt will sure hit the spot this "summer"!

So much is "growing on" at the Conservatory of Flowers lately...I hope you are part of the excitement.  Thanks for your continued interest and support of the Conservatory of Flowers!

WHAT'S IN BLOOM?

Disappointed by our tortuously tepid summer this year? If a brief look out the window this morningWaterlilly offered nothing more than another misty vista of water droplets so numerous and tiny, they obscured and vanquished even the most piercing ray of sunlight, come and take refuge in our tropical paradise!  Welcome the boisterous beads of sweat that billow from your brow as you weigh whether or not to shed the winter clothes that beckoned from the wardrobe! Regale in the inviting verdant carpet formed by the regular rows of rosettes of water lettuce (Pistia stratiotes) in the lower pond. The sweetly scented summer stampede of Stanhopea orchids has commenced bringing a remarkable olfactory and visual indulgence to the gallery. Colorful water lilies and lotus abound. The Victoria amazonica continues to produce its' dazzling leaves and blossoms. Musa velutina astounds with its stunning color combination. Magnificent Mednillas pepper the ponds with the pink pearls of their fallen florets. Brash bromeliads bloom in turn, each attempting to outshine the previous plants' engaging inflorescence. Thunbergia grandiflora reminds us of the azure allure of a sunny blue sky. Heliconias shriek with colors and shapes reminiscent of the wild parrots of a tropical junglAmazonica Lilypadse, or our own Telegraph Hill. The West African twisted cord flower (Strophanthus preussii) beguiles us with the question of why does it sport those long twisted strands from the tip of each petal anyway? For those with a penchant for poking plant parts, a puny young Mimosa pudica has returned to the gallery - try to find it (and stay tuned for more on this plant)!  It's summer in the Aquatics Gallery!

Wonderarium PrototypeEvery fifteen minutes a lucky volunteer from the crowd will have the opportunity to build a terrarium to take home!Introducing the MOBILE PLANT AMBASSADOR featuring a 1/4 scale mini-WONDERARIUM (Wonder + Terrarium)! Sarah Filley and Yvette Molina are the innovative artists behind WONDERARIUM, a public art proposal for a giant floating terrarium on Oakland's Lake Merritt.  While WONDERARIUM is proposed for water installation, the MOBILE PLANT AMBASSADOR unit was developed to take plants "on the road."  A visual mash-up of ice-cream carts, nostalgic vending stands, and Barnum and Bailey type attractions, MOBILE PLANT AMBASSADOR promotes spontaneous interaction with the novel experience of building a terrarium directly from the cart. All supplies (glass containers, pumice, soil, and a variety of plant cuttings) are arranged by drawer in the order needed for anyone to make their very own terrarium in four easy steps. As participants express their personal creativity through plants, they are also learning about propagation and investigating themes of micro-systems and climates-a mini ecology class! Learn more about our presenters at thewonderarium.com!

CONGRATULATIONS, NEW DOCENTS!

Congratulations to our new graduates of the volunteer docent training program! You'll soon recognize these new faces leading daily tours, answering questions at Special Events, and getting to know everyone in the Conservatory community! The well rounded group celebrated their completion of the summer session training program on Monday, August 22! Not only well-versed in the botanical beauties in our glass jungle - this crew knows how to cook! A fabulous feast was prepared by all to celebrate the end of the wonderful training program. Many congratulations and thanks are due to Erika Frank and Lau Hodges and our stellar intern Lenora for their behind-the-scenes work running the Docent Training Program this summer.

Our next 7-session Docent training will be held in February and March, but it's not necessary to wait until then to volunteer! To learn how you can start volunteering now, contact Erika Frank, Director of Volunteer Services, at (415) 637-4326 or efrank@sfcof.org.
