Dear ,

"A Very, Berry Place in Time"

The popular return of carnivorous plants has reminded me how fun it is to learn about plants. Watching volunteers dissect them at the Fly Trap Theatre, learning about the different trapping mechanisms, and how they attract different food sources is fascinating! It's also striking to consider that while these plants eat bugs, there are many plants that we eat, as we learned about in the Edible Expeditions presented in the same exhibit hall last summer! The Conservatory's permanent plant collection contains scores of intriguing economic and food plants for our visitors to study, photograph, learn from and appreciate. My favorite food plant is not within our collection, but many of you may share my love for strawberries. My preference at the market and on dessert menus, I also enjoy blueberries and raspberries.  But this week, due to my very hectic schedule, I have to admit that I thoroughly relish and love my "Blackberry".

For a person on the go, but required to stay connected, my Blackberry cell phone is a technology that allows me to get the most out of my work day.  As technologies go, for an 1879 Victorian glasshouse, the Conservatory of Flowers also gets the most out of our more modern day conveniences and applications of science and technology.  Our plant collections thrive in a large part thanks to the sophisticated computer-controlled environments that replicate the various ranges of tropical temperatures, humidity and air movement.

During your next visit to enjoy CHOMP 2 and the many other remarkable specimens within our tropical plant collection, take a moment to appreciate the melding of history with modern technology at the Conservatory of Flowers. (I was surprised that during his recent visit to San Francisco, President Obama did not stop by to see our White House's West Wing, where CHOMP 2 is currently drawing record crowds!) Our professional staff and volunteers work hard each day to provide a memorable and inspirational experience for our members and visitors.  The beauty, educational substance and innovative presentations within the historic Conservatory of Flowers are definitely something you can 'sink your teeth into'.  Thank you for your continued interest and support of all we do at the Conservatory of Flowers.  Enjoy!

CHOMP! 2 OPENING NIGHT ARTIST RECEPTION AND SILENT AUCTION:
A SEQUAL SUCCESS

           Chomp Reception Photo

Chomp! 2: Return of the Carnivorous Plants launched this month in high spirits! The exhibit blends the world of carnivorous plants, with watercolor renderings created by the Master Artists of the SF Botanical Garden Society's Illustration Program. The watercolors were graciously donated by the artists to the Conservatory, along with a collection of pen and ink drawings. The pieces were part of a silent auction held at the opening reception.

The sunny opening evening brought quite a crowd, eager to get the first glimpse of the carnivorous plants, and the watercolor paintings. Top bidders went home with the pen and inks, and many of the watercolors in the exhibit were also snapped up,  and will remain in the show for the run of the exhibit. Inquire at the Gift Shop about which pieces in are still available to purchase for your own collection. Advisory Council member Bruce Rogers donated a rare carnivorous plant, and the bidding didn't stop there! Eager attendees bid on the beautiful, floral arrangements decorating the Orchid Gallery, fresh from a few of the Master Artist's own gardens! Thanks to all who attended, all who bid, and all who contributed to the fun evening!

WHAT'S IN BLOOM AT THE CONSERVATORY?

Sarracenia flava bloom amongst other carnivorous plants in the CHOMP! 2 exhibit.
Chomp Bog image

Snapping traps, pitfall pitchers, sticky glue dew, mazes of oblivion -- deadly devouring devices of hungry plants eager to absorb the life nourishing juices of insects. Such lethality can be found daily at Chomp! 2: Return of the Carnivorous Plants. But there is a gentler side to these masters of deception. Like their vegetarian cousins, carnivorous plants reproduce sexually with often astoundingly beautiful flowers. To ensure reproduction, carnivorous plants shift their skills of trickery to employ insects for pollination.

Sarracenia flava, the Yellow Trumpet Plant, is one such example. Before getting to the business of trapping prey with nectar, needles, and narcotic, the plant produces flowers. Sarracenia flava blooms in early spring before its pitchers are mature, so as to not capture the needed pollinators. It then lures bumble bees of the genus Bombus with fragrance, nectar, and pollen. The other-worldly flowers have evolved so that, after the bee has landed on the sepals, it must enter into the flower to access the pollen. The bee is forced to enter between the petals and in doing so can deposit on the stigma pollen it has picked up from another plant. The bee then must walk around the interior of the flower where it is dusted with pollen before it can exit to visit more flowers. Sarracenia flava and many other carnivores are flaunting fabulous flowers at the Conservatory right now. Come to Chomp! 2: Return of the Carnivorous Plants to see an exhibit to die for and learn why not every attraction need be fatal.
