Dear ,
"Springing Forward!" Golden Gate Park in the springtime is one of the most picturesque parks in the nation, and standing proudly above a valley of botanical beauty is the Conservatory of Flowers. We're sad to say 'fare-well', as the trains pull away from the Special Exhibit Station on April 18th, but we're equally excited to 'spring ahead' into the much-anticipated CHOMP 2: Return of the Carnivorous Plants! Exhibition in May. The Conservatory's permanent collections also continue to mature, providing a unique inspirational experience that is also educationally enlightening. Our horticulture staff has introduced gorgeous seasonal color as stunning floral highlights within the various galleries.
Conservatory volunteers are energetically contributing an increasing number of hours to help expand our guided tour opportunities, hospitality and gift shop service, and special event support.
Visit us often during the coming months of Spring and consider bringing along a friend. Help us welcome them to one of America's great botanical treasures!
Thanks for your continued support! Cheers,
 Brent Dennis Director

WHAT'S IN BLOOM AT THE CONSERVATORY?
Microsorum punctatum 'Grandiceps' Climbing bird's-nest fern Polypodiaceae in the Aquatics Gallery, under Nursery Specialist Mario Vega's care. This species can be found on the Northeast wall of the water feature in the Aquatics Gallery, and from Africa and Asia to Australia. |
CONSERVATORY WINS BIG AT PACIFIC ORCHID EXPOSITION
The San Francisco Orchid Society celebrated its 58th Pacific Orchid Exposition last month. The amount of color that filled the Fort Mason Festival Pavilion was unparalleled. This year's theme was CARNIVAL and many clever displays were created that portrayed the theme, incorporating orchids with feathers, beads, masks and the general colorful debauchery associated with the holiday. The Conservatory horticulture staff created "Connie", a labor of love lead by Mario Vega and supported by Lupe Cota, Clare Cangiolosi and Eric Imperiale. Their hardwork paid off and won the trophy for "Best Exhibit Illustrating Show Theme". The Conservatory's staff also walked away with a blue ribbon in the Myoxanthus catagory and a 3rd place in the Lepanthes' yunckeri in the commercial/open.
"I enjoyed participating in the POE this year because we were able to express the Conservatory's mission of education and conservation in a vibrant display that was beautiful and enjoyable," said nursery specialist Eric Imperiale. Aside from his participation in the Conservatory's Display, this was a special year for Eric: he inagurated the Imperiale Youth Prize. As a young gardener, Eric received the Best of Orchid for Juniors Award. Since that time, the junior award has been removed from the program, but he wanted to introduce a new acknowledgement of young Orchid enthusiasts. In a lovely coincidence, the young winner this year was also a young SF Orchid Society member! Orchid grower Nikita Tu received the first Imperiale Youth Prize. Congratulations, Nikita Tu!

CONSERVATORY IMPLEMENTS NEW HOURS
The stark realities of our current economic challenges are settling in and unfortunately the Conservatory is not immune from the market dynamics affecting everyone. The Conservatory is taking many prudent and economically-sound steps to address these challenges head-on in a timely manner to end the year with a balanced budget.
One of the most important facility management changes is our reduced hours of operation. Beginning on April 1, 2010, the Conservatory of Flowers will be open to serve the public at 10 am and close at 4:30 pm with the final tickets sold at 4:00 pm. This adjustment recognizes and corrects for the low ticket-selling that occurred in the historic first hour of 9 am to 10 am. Please make note of this change in hours of operation.
In answering many questions as to how to help the Conservatory during these challenging times, we encourage making a donation. A link has been established within the Conservatory website for a convenient and secure way of support through financial gifts. Click here or click the "Support" tab on the Conservatory's website, or call Director of Development Jane Scurich at 415-831-2093 to make your gift today. |
STAYCATIONING IN SAN FRANCISCO?
Spring Break is here! Spend a fun-filled afternoon at the Conservatory. Bring the cameras and the crayons and see what souvenirs you can create in the galleries. Can you spot the turtle in Aquatics? How many landmarks have you visited in the Special Exhibits? How many cars is the train pulling today? What country produces the cacti towering over Potted Plants? Bring a picnic blanket, pick up some healthy snacks in the Café Kiosk, and enjoy a sunny spot in the Valley, where the plots are filled with blooming flowers! Visit our website before you visit for more ideas about what to expect when you bring the whole family! |
SAVE AMERICA'S TREASURES
The National Historic Preservation Society, which has been saving and preserving historic and architectural gems --- including the restoration of our beloved Conservatory of Flowers in the late 1990s -- has launched a campaign to save its own grant program, "Save America's Treasures". The proposed federal budget for 2011 eliminates funding for Save America's Treasures. Save America's Treasures has restored 1,100 structures and collections and created 16,000 jobs coast to coast since its inception by exectuive order in 1998. Their website has action suggestions for citizens, park lovers, and 'tweeters' alike to bring attention to the cause.

IN THE NEWS
What's in Bloom at the Conservatory? The Orchid Gallery! This month, Global Gourmet Catering showcased the Conservatory of Flowers at the launch for their spring menu. The party was aptly titled, 'In Bloom', and on March 6th and 7th, the Orchid Gallery blossomed, as the brilliant event design teams at Got Light and Spiral Hand used artistic lighting and sprigs of forsythia to create a wall of blooms, and a path of petals. The spring menu items were tasty and creative! For photos of the elegant evening, visit Irja Elisa Photography's website for more photos of the event. Email Morgan or call her at 415-846-0538 to discuss ideas for hosting your own event at the Conservatory! Not too early to plan that holiday party! |
