"Halloween and the Conservatory of Flowers"

For all who finds themselves filled with the fun spirits of Halloween, you may see the Conservatory of Flowers in an entirely different light during the coming week.  Costumed in its traditional whitewashing, the glass of the Conservatory can take on a ghost-like aura during the dusk to sunrise hours each night.  Perched upon the rise overlooking Conservatory Valley, the recent moonlit nights help create an eerie yet handsome image of our 1879 Victorian glasshouse.  For 130 Halloweens past and present, the Conservatory has stood impressively within the wooded landscapes of Golden Gate Park.  During the upcoming holiday season that takes us into 2010, make a point to float into the Conservatory for a visit or more.  Treat yourself to a unique sensory experience as you become immersed in some of the world's most beautiful gardens and botanical treasures.  Have a safe and fun-filled holiday!

JOIN US FOR THE 2ND ANNUAL GALA

Party-goers enjoy the first annual Gala, in 2008.

"Trains, Tropics and Treasures", the 2nd Annual Gala, will premiere the upcoming Golden Gate Express Garden Railway exhibit. On November 18, guests will be welcomed into the Conservatory for an evening of fine dining, treasure hunting, a silent auction, trains and, of course, exotic plants. Many thanks to the Gala Committee Members, whose innovative planning and dedicated efforts ensure a very unique evening for all!

The Gala will benefit the Conservatory's youth and education programming. Four days a week the Conservatory opens its doors for free to second, third, fourth and fifth grade classrooms from the San Francisco School District. During their visit, docents lead Adaptation Tours, guiding the students and their chaperones through the galleries. There, the students discover new facts about plant survival and see plants as they thrive in the different climates, bringing to life the ecology, botany and history lessons they learn in school.

Visit our website to learn more about our education programming.

Click here to purchase Gala tickets or to support the education programs, and let your friends on Facebook know you plan to attend!

WHAT'S IN BLOOM AT THE CONSERVATORY?

Brassia/Cattleya Binosa 'Key Lime'

Nursery Specialist Clare Cangiolosi could not bear to keep this blossoming cutie in the greenhouse one day longer. Today, the Brassia Cattleya Binosa 'Key Lime', a hybrid Orchid, arrives in the Aquatics Gallery. Come by to see if you can spot her in her new home.
IN THE NEWS

Writer Annette Black recently had the opportunity to spend a day behind the scenes at the Conservatory with nursery specialist, Eric Imperiale. What a treat! Her article chronicles a day well spent. Find out what kind of Vampire she encounters during her visit, and read the full story on the new website The Bold Italic.
