    Greetings!,

    Something New is Brewing!

While it has not been all that long since history was made when we surprised and then celebrated the one millionth visitor to the Conservatory of Flowers as marked from the reopening in 2003 in an equally important way, history was once again made in the celebration of the life and development of the Conservatory with the birth of something very new.

On Thursday, February 7, 2008, a small, but significant number of individuals gathered in the sunshine in front of the Conservatory to help launch a brand new group, purposefully organized to serve as advisors.  With a name that says it all, the newly formed Conservatory Advisory Council began their supportive involvement symbolically at the threshold of our Victorian landmark.  After an inspirational tour of the entire greenhouse's tropical collections and featured displays and exhibitions, the group of 18 adjourned to a cozy meeting room behind the Conservatory to begin their first official meeting.

The purpose of the Conservatory Advisory Council is to serve as a vital and diverse connection between the Conservatory and the greater community we serve.  With representation from the major Bay Area garden clubs, flower and plant societies, horticulture businesses, Master Gardeners, volunteers, marketing and financial experts, neighborhood residents and people just plain passionate about the Conservatory, we began exploring the unlimited possibilities of elevating the visibility, viability and sustainability of the Conservatory.  Strategic discussions on educational programs, floral displays and horticultural exhibitions, special events, fund-raising and development initiatives, and other mission-related, business-smart considerations were part of an expanding agenda of topics for this visionary group to embrace and provide advice.

The future will become even brighter for the Conservatory as the Advisory Council helps take our programs to higher levels of quality while expanding our audience and contributions to the community.  It's true something new IS brewing!

    Tuberolabium quisumbingii

Exciting News in our horticultural department! Recently the American Orchid Society (AOS) awarded a Certificate of Botanical Recognition (CBR) to a cultivar from the Conservatory's collection. The CBR recognition is for a species which is known, but has never been judged by the American Orchid Society. Every plant submitted from this point on will be judged against this award winner. Our Nursery Specialist are very excited and honored to receive this highly coveted award. This is the 7th CBR awarded to a plant in the Conservatory's vast collection and the first since 1990.

Chomp banner This species is native to the Philippines and continues to confuse exporters. Some export it under the name  Saccolabium quisumbingii, while others confuse it with T. kotoense from Taiwan. These easy-to-grow tiny jewels produce multiple branches filled with deeply fragrant flowers bearing sharply contrasting red-and-purple lip markings.
