Two Special Exhibits Open January 29, 2008

Dr. John Peterson instructs COF Docents in the fine art of Penjing
.
Greetings!, We are delighted to be opening two new Special Exhibits on Tuesday, January 29. An exciting and rare exhibit of Chinese penjing will make
its debut at the Conservatory. This ancient art form originated in the Tang
Dynasty around 600 AD and is considered to be the predecessor of Japanese
bonsai. Ten custom-created miniature plant landscapes will be featured in the
Aquatics Gallery. Dramatic stone sculptures, imported from Shanghai,
are planted with dwarf, compact growing trees and shrubs to depict a natural scene.
You won't want to miss this exciting exhibit!
Our very popular Lunar New Year celebration returns to the Potted Plants Gallery featuring traditional symbols of good fortune for 2008. Please
join us to celebrate the Year of the Rat and enjoy the beauty and fragrance of a variety of citrus and
oceans of lucky red blossoms.
COLOR: A Winter
Carnivale continues to delight visitors on these dreary days of winter.
Experience the color exhibit with our Director of Education, Lisa Van Cleef,
and host Nick Smith on abc Channel 7 View From the Bay, then plan a visit to
the Conservatory to enjoy, first hand, the colorful pollinator world.
Please join us in The Jungle! Brent Dennis Director

Buddha's Hand Citrus medica

Featured in our Lunar New Year display, located in the Potted Plants Gallery the Buddha's hand stands for luck and happiness in the Chinese tradition. Native to India, it is thought to be one of the oldest known citrus in cultivation. This fruit is an important medicinal plant, is used for perfuming rooms and is candied for fruitcakes and other desserts.
