A MOMENT TO REMEMBER
.
Greetings!
Happy New Year!
Welcome to our first issue of Jungle News for 2008. We will be publishing our enews the second and fourth week of each month to keep you informed about current exhibits, upcoming events and what's in bloom. I invite you to visit often and let us hear from you about your experiences at the Conservatory.
Recently Karen Beswick and her husband, Javier Salas, of Menlo Park celebrated their 16th anniversary with a visit to the Conservatory. Karen grew up in Marin, and visited the Conservatory as a child, but had not been back since then. Javier is originally from Mexico and this was his first visit to the Conservatory.
Karen writes, "I am so glad that our first visit worked out the way it did...just the two of us, so that we could truly take in the beauty and serenity of the place, and create a memory that will always be so special to us.
I found it particularly poignant that a passer-by commented to us as we sat in that beautiful space, 'Can you imagine anything more perfect than this moment? This moment is all we have...isn't it fantastic?' I had been feeling the same way, thinking that if there ever comes a time when I wish for one more day, I've had that day, right there in the Conservatory of Flowers.
We will be back many times I am sure, to help recreate for our 12 year old twin boys, our friends, our family and ourselves the magic that we felt on that day. We are grateful to have this beautiful place so close by to come and breathe, relax and rejuvenate. Thank you for all you have done to make the Conservatory such an extraordinary place to visit."
I hope that each of you will find a moment to enjoy the beauty and tranquility of our San Francisco jewel.

Welcome to Our New Nursery Specialists
The Conservatory is delighted to welcome two new nursery specialists to the staff. Nursery specialists work behind the scenes to insure that you, our visitor, enjoys a beautiful, changing, educational exhibit each and every time you visit the Conservatory. They labor many hours before the Conservatory opens to the public and fill their remaining hours propagating and nurturing our large botanical collection in the greenhouses adjacent to the Conservatory.
Eric Imperiale is a sixth generation San Franciscan who enjoyed visiting the Conservatory as a child. Early on, he developed a love for plants and began growing orchids when he was 12. Eric was employed as a San Francisco City Gardener when he applied to his "dream job" at the Conservatory. The educational mission along with the aesthetics of the Conservatory keeps Eric busy and motivated. After hours, Eric is delighted to spend time with his wife and their two and a half year old son.
Mario Vega comes to the Conservatory from a wholesale tropical nursery. A first generation San Franciscan, Mario also visited the Conservatory often as a child and those visits sparked a life-long interest in plants. His favorite part about his new position is, "Just being involved in the Conservatory - it's great to be here!" Mario and his wife recently moved to Mill Valley just in time for the big storm and three days without electricity. In his spare time Mario is an "amateur musician" who plays woodwinds.

Phaius Orchids
Shouting an exuberant welcome, a gaggle of Nun's Orchids (ours is a hybrid, Phaius tankervilleae Dan Rosenberg 'Mellow Yellow') is greeting visitors as they enter our Lowland Tropics gallery. The Nun's orchid is originally from Southern China, but the Phaius genus consists of approximately 50 species found in Africa, India and throughout tropical Asia. Also known as the swamp orchid, this wildly popular terrestrial likes it shady and moist.
