.
Greetings!
Tuesday evening, December 11th the Conservatory could not have looked classier as we welcomed a record crowd of volunteers to the annual holiday thank-you party. Entertainment by a string quartet and buffet stations loading with tasty tidbits further enhanced the sheer beauty of the Conservatory after dark.
We are so thankful this holiday season for the support of our dedicated volunteers and for our visitors who have passed the one million mark in just four years since our reopening in 2003.
Best wishes for a very happy holiday season!

Thea Vierling
Originally from Galveston, Texas, Thea received a degree in biology from the University of Connecticut. While attending graduate school in Plant Taxonomy, she took a course at the Organization for Tropical Studies in Costa Rica where the emphasis was on tropical ecology.
With a background in teaching biology,Thea now shares her teaching skills with fellow volunteers in both her taxonomy and Teaching Techniques classes. As Director of Education, Lisa Van Cleef says, "Thea really rocked our docent program. She enlisted technology to further our docent training, taped presentations so that everyone can continue to learn through the DVDs and moved our program into the 21st century. Not only does Thea volunteer fabulous ideas; she carries them through to completion! "
Officially "retired" Thea now has time to cultivate new interests and continue her love of learning. She is currently studying Chinese, traveling, sailing and thankfully for us, volunteering at the Conservatory of Flowers.
Thea, thank you from all of us for being a leader we all want to follow!

WHAT'S THAT BLOOMING BEAUTY?
In the Potted Plants gallery, just inside the door to your right, you'll find a spectacular tropical bleeding heart vine (Clerodendrum thomsoniae). This plant is native to West Tropical Africa-Liberia, Ghana, Togo, Nigeria, Cameroon and others.
After blossoming, this clerodendron forms black berries that burst open to uncover three brightly orange velvety seeds. There are more than 450 species of Clerodendrum including trees, shrubs and vines.
It's a member of the Verbenaceae family, as is the purple sandpaper vine (Petrea volubilis) that also grows on the arbor and the tube flower (Clerodendrum minahassae) in the Lowland Tropics gallery. | |
