Welcome to Spring!
With 2008 well under way and the cold of winter slowly giving forth to the new growth of the season, we would like to set our focus on your own blossoming business practices. Think of this as a business building primer.
In this is issue you will find information on how to improve your own animal wellness business, an update on another successful graduate practice, as well as some great ideas for products which you can add to your own practice from two successful local business owners.

Focus on Business
Do you know someone who just seems to have the Midas Touch when it comes to their business? We do too and in this newsletter we want to share a few of their secrets with you. We all know that the basis for success in our industry includes proper training and a deep appreciation for the animals we share the planet with. Even so, I have met many truly compassionate people with topnotch skills who admit to being frustrated that they do not have more clients or haven't seen significant growth in their practice.
Running a successful animal massage practice takes a many-pronged approach, but the rewards far outweigh the effort needed. Let's look at three ways that you can add value to your business and dollars to your bottom-line.
You already have an impressive set of skills for providing quality massage to animals. But ask yourself how long it's been since you added to your skill set. Maybe your practice could benefit from a workshop or two to add variety to your service offerings. If you are already doing massage, have you considered acupressure or specialized techniques such as myofascial release, Shiatsu or connective tissue approaches? We offer workshops in all of the above. We also have advanced training levels for performance massage and rehabilitation massage which can open doors to completely new markets.
Ok, what if you have a wide variety of skills and training, but you still want to see more growth. Have you considered adding a high-quality product line to your menu for the benefit of your clients? ViMiere products and Sorhorse Aromas (soon to become AScent Aromas), presented in this newsletter, both offer high-quality products made with natural healing ingredients. Support your sessions by using these products during a massage and offer them to your clients for purchase to help retain the benefits of your work between sessions.
Lastly, NWSAM recognizes that for some, the most challenging part of being an animal massage practitioner is selling ourselves to our clients. So we have created a series of "skill camps" to help build your confidence in all aspects of your business from presenting to a group, marketing, writing your business plan and creating a network within your community. Attend any or all of these skill camps to transform your business.

New Offerings @ NWSAM
This month we bring you a new line of essences produced by NWSAM graduate Vicki Draper. ViMiere products come in a wide range of formulations and have a profound effect on your environment and are tremendous agents for change.
I have watched Vicki's evolution as a practitioner and an inventor over the years and find myself humbled by the simple power of her products.
My favorite morning ritual includes a chakra balancing meditation using ViMiere "Soul Purpose". I finish by surrounding myself in a halo of "Abundance" and "Wealth". This ritual has brought surprising things my way and I highly recommend it to all.
"Manifest" is another tremendous essence for those of you wishing to evoke the next stage of your practice to come forth.
Formerly sold under the name SorHorse products, Joan Sorita has created a selection of sprays, salves and salts that utilize the powerful healing properties of essential oils.
Joan, one of the original founders of NWSAM, is one of the finest rehabilitative equine massage practitioners in the Western United States. Her compassionate touch has improved the lives of countless horses over the years.
I cannot get enough of her healing salve, which I use for everything from lip balm and cuticle softener for myself to a treatment for cuts and abrasions on my pets, a reliever for bug bites and itchy spots and a moisturizing treatment for hooves and paws.
The Tack Room Spray, besides smelling fantastic, is great for keeping bacteria down and freshening up dog beds, seat covers and saddle pads. I recommend this as a way of cleansing your environment between sessions. I also like to spray it on a washcloth to throw in the dryer with my towels and dog blankets.
We are also happy to announce a new course to help you explore creative ways to reduce your pet's carbon pawprint. Our Greening Your Pet one day seminar will introduce you to products and practices that support the health of your pet and the health of the planet. | |
NWSAM Grads @ Work
Rubi Sullivan embodies the phrase "a rolling stone gathers no moss". This girl is constantly on the move and her practice, Heal NW, is growing by the moment because of it. When she isn't with a client, she is canvassing Portland with cards and brochures and making connections in the community.
She has networking relationships with several veterinarians, chiropractors and even a canine osteopathic therapist, despite her self-admitted fear of introducing herself to strangers. She is quick to credit her growing list of contacts in her regular newsletters and event announcements.
Several of Portland's finer pet boutiques host 2-hour massage workshops where Rubi explains the benefits of massage to pet owners and gives them a few simple things they can do for their pets.
Heal NW uses clever marketing and diverse offerings to generate revenue. Besides her massage income, Rubi is pulling in dollars through her classes and her t-shirt sales. Sorhorse Aromas - Joni Sorita

After years of work in the animal wellness field, Joni Sorita has introduced a new product line that is powerfully effective and holds great energy. Joni has operated an animal rehabilitation farm in California and is a licensed Large Animal Massage Practitioner, Small Animal Massage Practitioner as well as LMP. She is also an avid rider and has competed in English and Western disciplines.
Sorhorse Aromas was created for the equine, canine and human world. These products can be used in households, barns, kennel areas, horse trailers, massage rooms, spas and the office. The product line was created from Joni's experiences working in these environments and through field research and listening to people talk about repeated problems their animals encounter. A common theme expressed was how they would like to see a more natural and holistic alternative to typical treatments. Aromatherapy offers one such alternative; flowers were on this earth long before man and the incredible grounding, healing and memory effect they impart is profound.

Vi Miere ® - Vicky Draper
Vi Miere® was founded in 2004 by Vicki Draper, Licensed Human and Animal Massage Practitioner. After studying computers, math and physics in college, she spent 17 years working in the computer industry. She decided to make a bold career change. She became trained in massage, acupressure and craniosacral therapy and opened a practice working with people. Shortly after she opened her practice in 1999, her clients began bringing their animals to her for help. Vicki knew this was the spark for her new career aligning her work with her life passions.
Vicki discovered essences could be made with crystals, so she started putting her crystals to use making them for herself and her animals. Today, Vi Miere's® signature products are crystal, flower and nature essence mists which are available on her website, in stores across the U.S. and at the classes Vicki teaches.
