We are well into the heat of summer and it is difficult to work in the garden this time of year.  The mornings are still nice and that gives us a pleasant time to do a little weeding, some watering, and a chance to enjoy the fruits of our spring labor.  Fall will be here before we know it so we need to start making preparations.  Fall is the best time to plant trees and shrubs, and don't forget about a Fall/Winter vegetable garden.  Our gift shop is already stocked with beautiful autumn decorations and gift ideas.  Stop by and let us help you get your Fall off to a great start.
Bamboo
bamboo Bamboo is among the primary signature plants of Asian inspired gardens and is equally at home in Tropical design gardens also.  Bamboo is in the grass family and is typically found in the tropical and subtropical regions of Southeast Asia.  Basically there are two different types of bamboo; runners and clump forming.  Both can be grown in the garden or better yet in containers.  For smaller and more suburban gardens growing bamboo in containers would be easier and less invasive to your neighbors.  Not to mention it's also very fashionable to have bamboo in containers on your back porch, patio, and even indoors!  A lot of research on bamboo has shown that this plant removes carbon dioxide from the atmosphere at a much faster rate than most other plants and in turn releases much more oxygen.  Not only is bamboo very chic and fashionable its also good for the environment!  The best containers for planting bamboo, indoors or out, is terracotta and glazed.  Since bamboo is a grass it likes to be fed.  Feed your bamboo with a balanced fertilizer high in nitrogen.  Use this fertilizer twice a month during the growing season to keep your bamboo lush and healthy.  Growing bamboo in containers is easy as long as its given adequate moisture and light.  At Seasons we carry bamboo for full sun and also for more shady areas.  Come by the garden center at Miller Hardware and let our friendly staff show you any of these wonderful plants and put the wow back in your garden!
Some Like it Hot!
Big Sky Series
If your garden has started to fade with the summer heat, here are a few tips that may help.  Many plants and flowers love the heat.  A few annuals to try are vinca, portulaca, penta, and caladiums.  Lantana, salvia, rudbeckia, and echinacea are perennials that do well this time of year.  Crape myrtles, oleander, and landscape roses give great color during July and August.  Make sure you keep plants deeply watered and fertilized.  Products like Cloud Cover will help sensitive plants make it through the heat of summer.  Come by and let us help you keep your garden looking good all year long.

Remember to:
  · Water deeply to make sure enough water gets down to the root zone of the plant, not just at the surface.
  · The best time to water is between 4 a.m. and 9 a.m. so that water is not lost to evaporation.
  · Gradually raise the blade height on your lawn mower as the heat rises.
  · Mulching around your landscape plantings will help conserve moisture, control weeds, and keep the roots cool.
  · Watch those plants that might need supplemental water such as annual plantings, hydrangeas, and azaleas.
Abelia
Abelia x grandiflora 'kaleidoscope'
abelia
Abelia is originally from Asia but was cultivated and introduced to the west by the Italians.  Known for its glossy green leaves and small pink tubular flowers, Abelia is a great plant for foundation plantings, the mixed perennial bed, or in front of larger shrubs.  Abelia is a great attractor of bees and butterflies and is sought for its lack of appeal by deer.  While new breeding was being done on other plants Abelia became lost in the horticultural industry.  Landscapers used Abelia predominantly as a low growing foundation plant until the homeowner found something else he or she preferred.  Some of you reading this now may be turning your nose up at the mention of this sometimes over-looked shrub!  Well I encourage you to read on and see for yourself the wonderful breeding that has been done to Abelia!
