Winter Cassia

Cassia

Winter Cassia (Cassia bicapsularis) is a winter blooming plant that puts on a wonderful display of sunny yellow flowers, just in time for the holiday season.  Originally from South America, this touch of the tropics is always a pleasure in a landscape setting, especially when it blooms at an unexpected time.  The fall display of flowers can be described as incredible and will become the talk of the neighborhood.  Cassia attracts butterflies, especially the Sulphurs and it is one of their caterpillars' favorite foods.  This hard-to-find plant is probably best located among other shrubs, especially evergreens, the reason being is that it is not real showy until it blooms.  We have a limited selection of the plant. Come by and let us show you this wonderful plant, as well as other fall bloomers.

Fall Leaf Colors

Have you ever wondered why deciduous trees and shrubs have colorful leaves in the fall?  The process is very complicated and not fully understood, though to make it simple, leaf color comes from pigments in the leaves.  Small amounts of these colors are in the leaves all along we just can't see them in the summer, because they are covered up by the green chlorophyll.  Trees respond to decreasing sunlight by producing less chlorophyll and eventually stop producing it altogether.  When that happens, the other pigments, already in the leaves, can finally show through.

Cool Season Vegetables
Brocolli
Just because fall is here, it does not mean that it is time to close down your vegetable garden until spring.  We are so lucky in our area to be able to garden year-round. In fact, I prefer to garden during the winter when it is not so hot and muggy.

There are a number of cool season vegetable plants that will continue to grow all winter long.  Just because it is winter, there is no reason you cannot have fresh salads. Lettuce, spinach, radishes, carrots, celery and arugula do well all Winter.  Let's not forget about planting Southern greens like collards, mustard and turnips.  Many of our herbs will continue to provide fresh condiments for cooking.  Parsley, fennel, dill and chives all do well during our cool months.  Other vegetables that you might want to try are English and sweet peas, rutabaga, beets, cabbage, Swiss chard, broccoli, cauliflower, Brussel sprouts and kale.

Tips for Fall Planting

Although the spring season is known as a favorite time for planting new shrubs, trees, and perennials, the fall season is actually a much better time for new plantings.  In the fall, plants require water but not nearly as much as the summer and spring months.  Fall planting ensures a healthier root system and an overall happier plant come next year.

In South Georgia we have challenging climates in which to garden. It is imperative that we follow the proper technique when planting trees, shrubs, and perennials.  Seasons sells container grown plants which are best suited for transplant in the garden almost year round.  Transplanting is the first and most critical step in ensuring your plants health and vigor.  Although this may sound like "old news", it is still amazing how many people still don't know or don't follow the proper techniques of planting.  An improperly planted tree or shrub will quickly bring frustration to a new gardener.  To ease this frustration, here is the proper method of planting to ensure success and bring joy back to your garden.

Lets first touch on preparing the area in which you will plant.  UGA Extension states that it is better to amend and till the area before actually planting.  This method cannot be stressed enough!  Begin by using a shovel, tiller, hoe, or even a pick axe and loosen the soil to let air and sunlight in.  Remember that plant roots need oxygen as well as water.  Prepared soil drains better and allows more air in making the plant that much happier.  Once you have loosened the soil area add plenty of organic matter.  Seasons has an excellent variety of soil amendments like Black Kow manure, chicken manure, mushroom compost, and our personal favorite Monrovia Soil Amendment.  Till in the organic matter to a depth of 6 to 8 inches.

Next dig a hole two to three times WIDER than the pot your plant is in and slightly deeper than the pot.  So if the pot is 10" wide and 12" deep dig the hole at least 30" wide and only about 13" deep.  Fill the hole with water and let drain.  Carefully remove the plant from its container and gently massage the roots.  This technique is used to encourage root growth out away from the plant and not in a circular pattern as they have developed in the plant's container.  Place the plant in the center of the hole leaving the top of the root ball elevated above the ground slightly.  DO NOT bury the whole root ball.  Next, backfill with your existing soil mixed with organic matter.  Tamp the soil around the plant lightly but still firm enough as to eliminate air pockets, and then water thoroughly.  Water frequently and deeply to establish a deep root system but avoid over-watering in the winter months as this may cause root rot.  Fertilize your new plantings with a balanced fertilizer.  At Seasons we recommend Grower's Special fertilizer because it is a good all-around fertilizer with lots of micro-nutrients.  Remember to be methodical and careful with new plantings. Control insect and disease problems before they get out of hand.   Seasons wants all of our customers to be successful gardeners, so stop by and let us help you have the garden you deserve!
