Greetings!
Today's newsletter will focus on the second Health Insurance Cooperative established in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Retailers Association of Massachusetts (RAM). In our last issue, we reviewed the Chamber of Commerce plans, the other Cooperative now available.
We can sell both plans and are always looking for ways to save our clients money. We do not see this either, however, being a viable alternative for many of our clients.
If you have a question, send an email to Bill or Vanessa today.

Retailers Association of Massachusetts (RAM) Cooperative |
RAM currently only offers one health insurance carrier, Fallon Community Health Plan, with three plan designs:
- Saver Basic I (1,200 hospitalization and 800 day surgery co-payment)
- Saver 1000 (1,000 deductible)
- Saver 2000/500 I (2,000 deductible and 500 hospital co-payment)
Fallon offers all three of their HMO networks (Select, Direct and the newly formed Steward) and a PPO. The benefit of obtaining one of these three plans with RAM, versus going direct, is that you receive a 3% discount on the rates.
Effective October 1st, Blue Cross will be offered as a their second health insurance option. It will have limited plan offerings, similar to Fallon, with the same 3% discount.
Let's take a closer look at the charges:
- Annual membership fee:
- Monthly administration fee: The monthly fee is by coverage (single is $5/month, employee/child is $9/month, employee/spouse is $10/month, family is $15 per month)
- Wellness requirement: All businesses enrolled in the Cooperative need to maintain an average annual wellness participation level of 50% for their eligible employees covered by RAM. If this requirement is not met, they will not be allowed to stay in the Cooperative.
If the 3% discount increases, this may become a more viable option. Currently, we do not see either Cooperative as a solution for many of our clients.
