| Gatorade
Hydration Tip |
|
To stay properly hydrated, athletes should know how much to drink to replace the sweat they lose. Weighing before and after practice is the simplest way to determine if drinking has been adequate. Players should keep their practice weight loss at less than 2% of their body weight (e.g. 3 lb for a 150-lb player.)

| 2007/08 Goals |
|
| Thank you for sharing your goals for the upcoming season. Here are a few that stood out:
Erick Green at Millbrook H.S. in Winchester, VA has a goal to be a leader on and off the court and do this with 100% every day. He's also working to improve and move from a mid major to a major prospect.
Armani Cardwood at Forest Hills H.S. in Queens, NY has a goal to keep his academics at a B average and get the triple double in every game.
Sidney Merriweather at Charles Allen Prosser Career Academy in Chicago, IL specifically wants to average 15 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 steals. He also wants to be a team leader, leading them to conference, city and state titles. To make these goals, he is getting in to the gym at 6am each morning and working on improving his game.
Aaron Aikman at Desert Christian in Tucson, AZ wants to average a double-double and so far is accomplishing it. |

Basketball Standout,
There is already one month down in your high school season. Twenty percent of your year is done. All scrimmages and practice games are in your rear view mirror. Now, everything is for real. Over the next three weeks is when "Real CHAMPIONS" begin to start setting the tone for the remainder of their season. Hopefully, your squad has some competitive non-conference match ups that will challenge your team prior to entering the holiday tournaments.
Developing mental toughness is a strong element that "Real CHAMPIONS" focus on daily. If you play for a good coach, there are certain parts of practice that are designed solely to push you to new mental limits. Besides, practices are supposed to be tougher than games. Strong mental toughness is an essential element in the chase for state titles.
Personally, I didn't play on a state championship title team back in my day when the shorts were a little bit shorter. But I can clearly remember the excitement and pain of being so close and falling short from earning that final victory. The disappointment never fully goes away even twenty years later. You just learn to deal with it, but it is the pleasure of competing and being so close to making history that drives "Real CHAMPIONS" to work hard with planned focus every day in the gym and in the classroom.
So here is my challenge for this month
I am giving out two rewards in January:
- For players on a team that advance to the championship game in a 2007 holiday tournament
- For players on a team that WIN the Championship in a 2007 holiday tournament
* Proof will be needed. I know how some of you young guys get things a little twisted now days!
Always remember, it takes more to win.
This is your time to put your team on your back like Baron Davis against the Dallas Mavericks in last year's playoffs and get it done. I look forward to hearing from you via email at the end of the month to see how many of you successfully completed this challenge. The reward will be cool, but the feeling of accomplishing a goal with your teammates will be cooler and never forgotten.
Until next month, continue to get better everyday and remember how precious life is. Try to spend some time with your family, especially your little brothers and sisters. They need not only your guidance but your time. Before you know it, you will be off playing college basketball on TV and out of the house. So take time for them over the next couple of weeks to brighten someone else's day.
Create-N-Finish,
Christopher Rivers |
| John Wall - New On The Summer Scene |
|
John Wall this time last year was a name that very few people knew or cared to know. With two short summer trips to Chicago and Philadelphia this would all change. John erupted onto the scene at Rbk U, but those in attendance at the RBK Breakout Underclass Camp knew what was coming weeks in advance.
The Rbk Breakout Underclass Camp was absolutely loaded with elite level talent from all over the country, yet this mohawked baller from North Carolina teamed up with 2010 6'4 SG and D-ONE SPORTS teammate, JT Terrell, and ripped through the competition as if it were a Saturday morning pick-up game.
One defender after another was reduced with either a crossover, spin move or simply a burst of speed that left them defending the air that used to contain the body of the young man now suspended from the rim screaming like a banshee.
Wall would continue this assault on the nation's top point guards two weeks later at Rbk U in Philadelphia. He quickly quieted any talk that existed from critics wondering if John could perform this way "against the big boys". All John did against the big boys was finish Rbk U #2 in scoring, #1 in assists and #7 in steals. John delivered the goods during his week at Rbk U and was richly rewarded for doing so with every major program in the country making their best effort to get his attention by camp's end.
At the conclusion of camp, John returned home to work with his trainer Dwon Clifton and prepare for phase 3 of his assault on the recruiting world at the Reebok Summer Championships. His team, D-ONE SPORTS 16U, arrived in Las Vegas with only 8 players and proceeded to dismantle team after team in the 17U open division. The knock coming from Rbk U was that John couldn't shoot the ball from the perimeter. However, defender after defender found this to be much easier said than done as Wall made up the cushion given by them and blew past them anyway. TJ Ford and Mike Conley are the names that most scouts recall when attempting to explain how remarkable this young man's gifts are, but what separates him from those NBA players is that Wall is a legitimate 6'4 and growing more in the mold of Jason Kidd.
Currently, schools such as Kentucky, Miami, NC State, USC, Memphis, OK St, Louisville, Oregon, Ohio St and Indiana are all making their way to Word of God Christian Academy in Raleigh, NC to recruit Wall. But as with all nationally ranked players, John will now have to go through the rest of his high school career as "the Hunted" instead of "the Hunter". I doubt this will be a problem because I just don't think there are too many point guards in the country fast enough to catch him. |

Alonzo Weatherby, high school basketball analyst, gave us his thoughts:
Campbell Hall vs St. Edwards
December 6th 2007
Campbell Hall boasts arguably the most talented SG in the high school ranks nationally in 6'4" UCLA Bound Jrue Holiday. Those who have seen Holiday play, know that he has that West Coast smoothness to his game that makes things look effortless. He's long, athletic and plays the game with a level of intelligence that you rarely see on the H.S. level. He will be an immediate impact player the moment he steps foot on campus at UCLA.
St. Edwards 'Big Man on Campus' is one of the nation's top power forward prospects, Michigan State bound Delvon Roe. The 6'8" lefty is an athletic specimen who makes his living on the low block with athletic post moves and emphatic finishes.
This will be an entertaining game from inside and out, pitting two of the nation's elite players at their respective positions. Both of whom are favorites to be named to the McDonalds All-American Game.
Oak Hill Academy vs St. Benedicts
December 13th 2007
Oak Hill is home to the nation's best and most entertaining prospect, 6'2" PG and Arizona bound, Brandon Jennings. Jennings' game is reminiscent of a young Kenny Anderson but on steroids! He is one of the quickest and most athletic guards in the country hands down, plays the game above the rim with an equal amount of substance and flash and is a natural born winner. He is capable of putting his team on his back and lives for clutch situations.
St. Benedicts showcases a player who is the definition of the position "power forward", in 6'9" Louisville bound, Samardo Samuels. Samuels is an absolute beast in the paint, and is the kind of low block presence that could make any collegiate team a Final Four contender. He's the perfect combination of everything a power forward should be big, strong, athletic and intimidating.
This will be an entertaining game from start to finish, pitting not only two of the nation's elite players and future McDonalds All-Americans, but two of the nation's best teams as well. |
