The Keys to Coaching...
People ask me what I do in a coaching session. It's a great question... with as many answers as clients.

My goal for each coaching session is to help people do what they said they would do, in the time they said they would. That's my definition of productivity.

How we get to that level where your words match your actions, is a process of observation, questioning and practice. A lot of practice...

Here are some coaching questions that can help you with your own self-coaching:

  • What part(s) of your system work well?
  • What part(s) aren't supporting you?
  • Are you working hard to make the system work?
(Hint: if you do double entry, data entry after-the-fact, or feel obligated to make it look a certain way, the system is probably working you, not supporting you.)

When you ask:
       "Is this where this goes?"

       "Should I put this here?"
       "Did I do that right?"

I reply:
  • Where will you look for that thing (file, form, email, reminder or address) when you need it?
  • How would you like to be reminded to do that?
(I ask more questions than give answers. I need to make sure it's truly your system. Because when I walk out the door, you're the one who needs to know where things are, how they're organized and when your appointments are.)
When I hear:
        "I'll do that later."
"I wish this thing could ..."
"Oh, I have to remember to ..."

I stop what we're doing and follow your lead.

I ask questions like:
  • What's in your way of doing that right now?
  • Is there a learning curve? Technology gap? Missing piece?
  • How long would it really take to get it done?*
(*This is a trick question. People tend to think tasks like entering info into a phone, database or email takes much longer than it really does. And they tend to underestimate how long responding to voicemail and doing "one quick thing" down the hall really takes.)

Once you've got your process handled, all the tips, speedkeys, and other techniques will help your systems keep pace with your volume of work.
