We receive a great many emails with events for our newsletter.  We wish we could include them all.  Here's how to increase the likelihood of being included:

  • Put your event on the WVIA ArtScene calendar.  We're sure to find it.  Just click Submit an event to the ArtScene calendar and fill in the blanks!
  • We like to copy and paste directly from your email to our newsletter, so please use plain text (or unadorned HTML) in your emails to us.
  • Include everything essential, but try to limit your notice to a paragraph or two.  Be sure to include your location, date(s) and time, contact information and whether the event is free (provide prices if not).
  • It's ok to attach an image, but we may not have room for it.  It helps if the image is small (maximum 200 x 200), but we can resize it if necessary.
  • Feel free to include a link for more information!
  • Try to send well in advance - preferably two weeks - but send anyway - we may have room at the last minute.  As of yet, we don't have a regular schedule, but we're aiming for every two weeks.
  • Over 5,000 people receive our news-letter, and the list is growing.  You can help us by forwarding it to folks - an easy way to inform them about YOUR event!  (See the"Forward" link at the bottom of the newsletter.)

Greetings! ,

From the Executive Director

University CornersThis is a special one-topic newsletter of interest to regional artists.  I'll be back soon with up-and-coming events, of which there are many to note as the dog days of summer are fading.

What if I told you, struggling artist, that you could have your own gallery space for the paltry sum of $20 per month?  There would be many other artists in this gallery, which is a good thing, because it will draw traffic to your work.  Speaking of traffic, the location of your gallery is on the first block of South Main Street, right around the corner from Movies14 - arguably the block with the most pedestrian traffic in the city of Wilkes-Barre.  The gallery will take no commission on sales of your work - you get it ALL, except for a 2% credit card processing fee if your buyer uses a credit card.  All you have to do is pay your $20 a month and sign up for one 5-hour stint to literally mind the store.

Sound too good to be true?

That's what I thought, but I'm convinced.  I'm SO convinced that, hopefully, you will soon be able to buy my photographs at this very gallery.  The catch is that we need at least 40 artists to make it work - preferably 50, but it will fly with 40.

Here's the scoop:

Kathleen Godwin, the driving force behind Arts YOUniverse and local cultural impressario (it's the only word that works!), has been approached by Carlsberg Management Company, the folks responsible for filling up University Corners retail space, with an offer she couldn't refuse.  It seems this enlightened company realizes that a little arts and culture can liven up a retail district - now THERE'S a concept!

University CornersKathleen and I have had a number of conversations about the idea and have batted around ideas about how to make it work.  What has emerged is the first collaboration between Arts YOUniverse and the Cultural Council.  The site is the space next to where Quizno's used to be.  There is plenty of wall space, as well as floor space for sculpture, and you can display anything (within reason) in your allocation of space.  If you want to display your custom-made jewelry, you can set up a cabinet along the wall or on pedestals.  You get the idea.  In addition, there is open space near the windows on the street that will be used for performance art, rehearsals, readings, and the like - all visible from the sidewalk.  (The tentative name for this venture is "The Rehearsal Gallery" but that's open for suggestions.)

Here's what you need to do:
  • If you're interested, reply to this message indicating your interest.  "I'm IN" will do nicely.  And tell us a little about yourself and what you think you'd like to have in the gallery.
  • If you have questions, reply to this message with them, and we'll do our best to answer.  (This is a work in progress.)
  • SPREAD THE WORD to other artists that you think may be interested by click on the "Forward E-mail" link at the bottom of this newsletter.  The more artists, the better - let's see if we can get 50.
Depending on the response, there may be a required review of your work to assure a good "mix" and quality - so don't delay!  The Cultural Council will be assisting in promotion, as well as creating web content related to the project.  The plan is to get this done in October, so ACT NOW!  Can you tell we're excited?

I'll be back soon with a status report and news of the upcoming - of which there is quite a bit!
