Help Us Help You!

We receive a great many emails with events for our newsletter.  We wish we could include them all.  Here's how to increase the likelihood of being included:

  • Put your event on the WVIA ArtScene calendar.  We're sure to find it.  Just click Submit an event to the ArtScene calendar and fill in the blanks!
  • We like to copy and paste directly from your email to our newsletter, so please use plain text (or unadorned HTML) in your emails to us.
  • Include everything essential, but try to limit your notice to a paragraph or two.  Be sure to include your location, date(s) and time, contact information and whether the event is free (provide prices if not).
  • It's ok to attach an image, but we may not have room for it.  It helps if the image is small (maximum 200 x 200), but we can resize it if necessary.
  • Feel free to include a link for more information!
  • Try to send well in advance - preferably two weeks - but send anyway - we may have room at the last minute.  As of yet, we don't have a regular schedule, but we're aiming for every two weeks.
  • Over 5,000 people receive our news-letter, and the list is growing.  You can help us by forwarding it to folks - an easy way to inform them about YOUR event!  (See the"Forward" link at the bottom of the newsletter.)

Greetings! ,

From the Executive Director

The lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer are almost upon us, but there's SO MUCH TO DO!

In this issue we are uncharacteristically timely in that we are giving you some relatively advanced notice of some events for your consideration.  These events are also not your usual fare of openings and concerts, although there are plenty of those to be had (check the WVIA Events Calendar under Quick Links).  And except for the first one, which is on Sunday, you have some time to prioritize, check with those who must be checked with, and make some plans!

And we report on yet another development in the state budget and give YOU the power to be heard.

Read on!

Thank you!

Poetry and Cows?

You think I'm kidding, right?

On Sunday, June 14, the folks at The Lands at Hillside Farms will conduct a poetry seminar discussing the English Romantic poets and how they drew their inspiration from nature and the idealized rural life. The event will begin with a horse drawn wagon ride through pastures filled with grazing cows and alongside gently flowing streams.  Professor Rebecca Steinberger, PhD, Chairperson of the English Department at Misericordia University, will share her knowledge of the Romantic Era.

Following the wagon ride, participants will convene at The Cottage, where refreshments will be served and Dr. Steinberger will conduct a classroom discussion of certain poems she will have selected.

Enrollment is limited to 20 people for the wagon ride and seminar, while 30 additional people can participate in the seminar only. Cost for the full program is $35.00 and $25.00 for the seminar only.
Time: 1:00p - 5:00p

I am SO there!

Speaking of Cows, here's one for the kids...

Name the Calf Contest

All throughout June, the folks at Hillside Farms will have a contest held in order to name their newest Jersey heifer calf.  She was born the morning of June 5 up in the pasture.  She traveled throughout the pasture and was quiet a challenge to catch.  She is so full of life and energy!  The only rule of the contest is that the name of the calf must begin with a T after her mother Tic, because they name their calves based on the first letter of their mother's name.  At the end of the month Hillside will draw a winning name and the winner will receive a 25 dollar gift certificate (That's a LOT of ice cream!) and have their picture taken with the calf and posted on the website.

As far as I know, you can contact Will about that, too.  And you should probably go SEE the calf, right?  After all, could you name a calf you haven't seen?  And then there's the ice cream...

Down the River

Okay, so there are TWO river-related events to put on your calendar, but they're part of the same weekend, which is NEXT weekend.

Friday, June 19th marks the beginning of a new era for the Greater Wilkes-Barre region with the Official Opening of the RiverCommon.  There will be a ribbon-cutting at the Northampton Street "portal," at 4pm followed by live music by the Wyoming Valley Band, Bobby Bath, and Don Shapelle.  This is an event for the history books folks - and you wouldn't want to have to tell your grandkids that you weren't there.
.
On Saturday, June 20th the celebration will segué into the 10th annual RiverFest and Sojourn, hosting a plethora of vendors, musicians and exhibitors in both the Nesbitt and River Common Parks.
.
The family friendly event will run from 12pm to 9pm, and will host various vendors, exhibitors, and street performers. Kids will be able to enjoy the chance to view the live birds of prey and live mammals and can look forward to pony rides, field games, moon walk, tree climb, rock climbing wall, kayaking demos, arts and crafts projects, fishing & fly tying demos, and children's bike safety program with free helmet give away.

Amidst all this activity, a full day of music will be lined up in both parks with the sounds of George Wesley, Don Shapelle, Woody Browns Project, SW!MS, K8, Nowhere Slow, Bobby Bath, Nonrefundables, and Charles Havira taking stage to both sides of the River.

And if you have never kayaked on the Susquehanna, this is the weekend to do it!  Get all the info you need (and more!) at the new web site at www.rivercommon.org.

Free Art - AGAIN!

THIS YEAR THE ART IS TWICE AS FREE
as Paper Kite Press Studio & Gallery Celebrates Their Second Anniversary of
GIVING BACK TO THE COMMUNITY.

August of 2009 will mark the Second Anniversary of Paper Kite Press Studio & Gallery at its current location on Main Street in Kingston. Last year we had the crazy idea to give away all of the art on exhibit in August. It was such a HUGE hit, this year we're making the art twice as free.

FREE ART
All works on display for the August Anniversary show will be FREE (limit one piece per household). All we ask is that you genuinely WANT the piece you decide to own. Yes, free. No catch, no strings, no tricky marketing gimmicks. Like it, and you own it. Period. This is our way of saying "thank you" to the community that has supported us, and, our way of supporting a community that continues to say "thank you" to us for bringing the arts to Main Street.

The exhibit opening will be held on Friday, August 21st, and is free and open to the public to attend. Visitors to the opening who are interested in a particular piece of art are asked to return on Sunday August 23rd at noon to claim the work. All art will be displayed during the month of August, and will be available to anyone who wants it for FREE. Last year, 55 pieces of art (all that were donated) were given away to happy homes.

You know, I just don't know how they do it!  The folks at Paper Kite Press just keep coming up with these wonderful, zany ideas!  Now of course if you're an artist, you will want to know how to get in on this amazing event, so click HERE for the call to artsts, which explains all. Did I mention they also have a Facebook page?

Bye Bye, Big Bird
Big Bird Headed for Extinction!

More bad news from the State Budget.  It seems the current version of the Governor's budget ZEROES OUT all money for Public Broadcasting in Pennsylvania.

The folks at WVIA have bent over backwards to make ends meet - taking a voluntary reduction of 20% last year, laying off people, and cutting salaries.  According to Bill Kelly, the cut means about a million dollars to WVIA, about 18% of their funding.

Maybe it's an exaggeration to say Big Bird is endangered, but I'm sure none of us want to see/hear longer pledge drives or cuts in the programming.

If you already KNOW the story, just click Save Big Bird! to make your voice heard (or read the story and come back here to play Oscar the Grouch with our legislators.

If you want to read the whole story from Bill, go to WVIA's web site and click on WVIA Needs You (on the left).
