Help Us Help You!

We receive a great many emails with events for our newsletter.  We wish we could include them all.  Here's how to increase the likelihood of being included:

  • Put your event on the WVIA ArtScene calendar.  We're sure to find it.  Just click Submit an event to the ArtScene calendar and fill in the blanks!
  • We like to copy and paste directly from your email to our newsletter, so please use plain text (or unadorned HTML) in your emails to us.
  • Include everything essential, but try to limit your notice to a paragraph or two.  Be sure to include your location, date(s) and time, contact information and whether the event is free (provide prices if not).
  • It's ok to attach an image, but we may not have room for it.  It helps if the image is small (maximum 200 x 200), but we can resize it if necessary.
  • Feel free to include a link for more information!
  • Try to send well in advance - preferably two weeks - but send anyway - we may have room at the last minute.  As of yet, we don't have a regular schedule, but we're aiming for every two weeks.
  • Over 4,000 people receive our news-letter, and the list is growing.  You can help us by forwarding it to folks - an easy way to inform them about YOUR event!  (See the"Forward" link at the bottom of the newsletter.)

Greetings! ,

From the Executive Director

Happy New Year!

Back to the nuts & berries, eh?  I hope your holidays were great.  Now it's time to take our Hibernol and wake up around Easter, right?  No WAY!  There's a lot to do!

We feature a truly unique event for tomorrow night (Tuesday), and some other upcoming not-to-be-missed things; we respond (with a spark!) to a challenge issued by the Times Leader (and ask for your ideas), and we have our first REAL coupon offer, courtesy of Marquis Art & Frame.

See you around town!

Mike Burnside

ps: Don't forget to list your event on the ArtScene Calendar at WVIA.  Instructions are on the left, as always.
Bread and Puppets?

Tomorrow night (Tuesday) at 7:30pm, you have a rare opportunity to experience a remarkable happening.  Something Special is hosting the Bread and Puppet Theater, and - trust me - anything can happen.  There may be shoes thrown.  Here's what they have to say:

Bread & Puppet Theater presents the Dirt Cheap Opera, the story of the gangster Mac the Knife and his brand new wife Polly, consisting of fragments stolen from the famous Brecht/Weill, "Three Penny Opera", newly mixed and freshly re-baked to suit the taste of the citizens of our divine republic which is reigned over by the Gods of Love, Money, Justice, and Revenge.

Even in this truncated form the opera presents nothing but eternal
truths; truths which are as cheap as the cardboard from which the Gods as well as the main characters of the play are made, and as bright as the bright paint that painted them.

Donations appreciated.

3rd Friday ArtWalk

It's on the 16th.  Hope for better weather!

We have a new (and interactive) 3rd Friday map!  Click 3rd Friday ArtWalk map to see all the locations and most of what's going on.

(Note to venues - Please fill in your enformation for this month!  Just send me your e-mail address and I'll add you as a collaborator so YOU can edit the map.)

Get Ready for New Year's Eve!

No, that's not a typo.  In an editorial on January 3rd, the Times Leader issued a call for a "First Night" (New Year's Eve) celebration in downtown Wilkes-Barre, beginning in 2009.  And they rightly suggest that planning should begin NOW.

More to the point, they said, "Perhaps the Cultural Council of Luzerne County could act as a spark plug for Wilkes-Barre's celebration."

OK!  First of all, we're delighted to be on the Times Leader's radar screen.  Second, given the editorial, we're certain we can count on the Times Leader's participation.

So we'll rise to the bait!  Let's get started.  Please email us and give us your thoughts.  Is it a good idea, or should we be focusing on something else?  Let us know if you want to help.

Hey!  We've got a whole year to get it right!

We've Got DEALS!
Below you will find our very first real coupon offer.  We urge you to take advantage of it!  Why?  Well, because the folks at Marquis Art & Frame do a great job and are a delight to work with for your framing needs!  And also, we'd like to see a GREAT response to our first coupon offer so we can brag about it and get some more GREAT DEALS!

We've had a few inquiries about  the coupons, so here's what you need to know:

  1. The coupon format and content is VERY flexible.  Make it a discount, a two-for-one deal, a free cup of coffee - anything at all.  If you can describe it in a few sentences, we can make it a coupon.  As you can see, we can put your logo in it; we can include an expiration date.  You dream it up, we'll figure out a way.
  2. You can send us the text and a graphic by email and we'll set up the coupon for you.
  3. You can put a LINK in the coupon (the Marquis logo is a link to their web site) for more details or conditions.
  4. Rates:  Well, we're not sure what the rates should be.  This newsletter reaches over 5,000 people in the region with a wide range of interests about arts & culture - a large and well-targeted audience.  So here's the deal.  We'll do ONE RUN of a coupon for $75, and you can run it (with no changes except an expiration date, if necessary) for as many times as you want for $25 per run.
  5. We'll set up the coupon for you, but if it's going to be really complicated, we might want to charge you for the time to do it.  (This is basically to cover ourselves for the unexpected, but we'll talk about it before you commit.)
  6. Try it!  Frankly, we can really use the money!  So you can support the arts AND get some action.  Such a deal!
Write now if you're interested.  Include a phone number if we need to talk!  cclcarts@gmail.com
