Help Us Help You!
We receive a great many emails with events for our newsletter. We wish we could include them all. Here's how to increase the likelihood of being included:
- Put your event on the WVIA ArtScene calendar. We're sure to find it. Just click Submit an event to the ArtScene calendar and fill in the blanks!
-
We like to copy and paste directly from your email to our newsletter, so please use plain text (or unadorned HTML) in your emails to us.
-
Include everything essential, but try to limit your notice to a paragraph or two. Be sure to include your location, date(s) and time, contact information and whether the event is free (provide prices if not).
-
It's ok to attach an image, but we may not have room for it. It helps if the image is small (maximum 200 x 200), but we can resize it if necessary.
-
Feel free to include a link for more information!
-
Try to send well in advance - preferably two weeks - but send anyway - we may have room at the last minute. As of yet, we don't have a regular schedule, but we're aiming for every two weeks.
-
Over 4,000 people receive our news-letter, and the list is growing. You can help us by forwarding it to folks - an easy way to inform them about YOUR event! (See the"Forward" link at the bottom of the newsletter.)

From the Executive Director It's too cold, too soon, for my taste, but there's plenty going on!
In this issue, we update the 3rd Friday activities in Wilkes-Barre & Kingston, along with some other Fridays things, and we toss out some upcoming holiday happenings for your consideration.
In our first article, we cast about for YOUR help in making this newsletter better for ALL of the localities in Luzerne County. It won't make you famous, and there's no money involved, but we'll give you a byline and your neighbors will thank you.
And in our last item, we're trying something new. Maybe we can help you while you help us!
Happy Thanksgiving! Mike Burnside
ps: Don't forget to list your event on the ArtScene Calendar at WVIA. Instructions are on the left, as always.

Call for Correspondents
Here's what we say on our web site: The Cultural Council of Luzerne County is the local arts agency working
to promote awareness of and provide support services to arts, cultural
and related educational programs in Luzerne County.
We take that very seriously, but sometimes it seems a bit overwhelming! We're very much aware that this newsletter can't cover every event worthy of promotion, but we KNOW we can do a better job, particularly in areas of the county that we're not covering very well. Over 5,000 people receive this newsletter, but we'd like it to be more, and we'd like it to have much more information from Hazleton, White Haven, Weatherly, Nanticoke, Pittston, the Back Mountain and other areas of the county. I know, I could just comb the Guide, the Standard-Speaker, the Dispatch and all the web sites of all the county organizations that might have things listed, but I simply don't have the time! Apart from that, you can't copy & paste from a newspaper, and most important, I'm not familiar with many of the venues or performers. Maybe you, or someone you know, can help. If you're plugged in to the cultural and arts scene in where you live, I'd like to talk with you! It would involve you sending me a paragraph or two about what's coming up in your area that you'd like to see mentioned in the newsletter, as well as assuring that the event has been listed in WVIA's events calendar. What do you get out of it? Not much - a little byline and the satisfaction that you're doing a little bit to spread the word. And Luzerne County gets an arts & cultural newsletter that's better than it used to be. But the artists and performers and venues will see a few more in the audience, and that makes it worth it. If you're so inclined, send me an email at cclcarts@gmail.com telling me a little about yourself and why you'd like to give it a try. Collaboration is a wonderful and powerful thing! TIA (Thanks in advance), Mike

On
Saturday, December 13, 2008, at 2 PM the Anthracite Heritage Museum
will host a celebration of Christmas customs from Germany. Many
Americans know that Silent Night, perhaps
the best loved of the traditional carols and the Christmas tree (Tannenbaum)
originated in Germany. But there are many other familiar symbols of the
season which developed in Germany's Erzgebirge Mountains (Ore
Mountains), a region which like NE Pennsylvania
was born as a mining region. Erzgebirge, known as the Christmas Village of the World,
used the skills developed for mining to harness the power of mountain
streams to produce Nutcrackers and other wooden toys and decorations
from the abundance of trees
which covered the area.
A
90- minute program will offer participants the opportunity to see a toy
demonstration, enjoy holiday music activities, hear German folk-lore,
take a photo with St. Nicholas & Ruprecht,
sample holiday treats, and more. All ages are welcome. Space is limited
and reservation is required by December 5. A $6 fee per person includes
the program and admission to the exhibit, Anthracite People. Anthracite Heritage Museum, McDade Park, Scranton
Admission: $6 per person
Phone (570) 963-4804 for reservation information.
